Holy shit, Shrek came out 14 years ago and look how well it's aged.

Why don't modern CGI movies look as good?
>>
Actually it's been 15 years
>>
>>85383303
Disney got lazy so everyone else got lazy. Thats what happens you you let a company becomes a monopoly.
>>
That dress is pretty low res. So are the bricks. Looks ok, not great by any stretch
>>
>>85383303
They do. There's just a plateau of how good CG stuff can look.

More importantly, the story has aged pretty goddamned terribly.
>>
Have you seen final fantasy: the spirits within lately?
>>
>>85383561
It's kinda sad when Square Enix games these days don't even make the top 10 graphics. In terms of real time.

Animated humans look shit now and they looked just as shit back then

CGI only works on stylized shit

Still blows my mind that the cg was this good back in 1993. I don't know how the hell they pulled it off.

No.

Just looked it up. 4 Minutes total cgi in the movie and it took over a year to animate and render.
No wonder most cg of that time didn't look any thing like that good.

After reading that, I do appreciate what pixar pulled off in Toy Story even more though.
>>
>>85385211
That's a huge reason why CG often looks terrible, it's expensive as FUCK. Probably the most expensive parts of any movie are the CG parts and so they get the cheapest fly by night studio to do it. You'd be amazed at the amount of power required to get an animated film done in a reasonable amount of time. Not to mention the cost of the machines.
>>
>>85385211
Yeah, since a lot of CG skin looked like plastic back then, it actually lent itself quite well to animating... well, toys!
>>
>>85385211
If you thought what Pixar pulled off with Toy Story, you should read about the production for Toy Story 2
>>
>>85385211
Watching the movie today, the CG really sticks out. There's one scene, in particular, where they're in a field full of running dinosaurs that looks awful.
>>
>>85384480
That's not how it looks in the movie.

Also pretty sure that image is the animatronic raptors. If you watch the scene it's pretty easy to tell when they're CGI.

It doesn't look nearly as nice in motion, but yeah in that screenshot Shrek does look pretty good.

I think it's because a lot of animation studios try to emulate a Disney/Pixar look, but Disney themselves consistently improve upon their animation, so it reflects poorly on previous works.

That wouldn't really explain it all though, even other works of CGI look pretty dated when you look back. I always figured it's simply a result of technology moving forward

After A Bug's Life, Lastenter and his team returned to see how the film was going only to see it was a disaster. Unfortunately, the movie was such a disaster that Lastender decided to rewrite the entire film from scratch thus leaving less than a year for the entire movie to be animated. At one point in the rush, the movie files was accidentally deleted and production was only saved because of a women animator who stored backups because she liked to show the movies she was working on to her children before they were were finished.
>>
>>85385211
For a time the T-Rex was going to be stop motion and addition to puppeting and animatronics like the raptors. . And in the end it sort of was. They built a miniature rig and hooked to a computer. Then as the stop motion artist moved it they would capture each frame and render the CGI that way.
Pioneering technologies!

If you want to experience uncanny valley go to a wax museum. The mannequins hit the same 'close but not close enough' emulation of humans to unnerve you. The first time I went there was a tour group that was making a stop there and everyone was all laughs and smiles walking up the entrance, as soon as the threshold had been crossed from foyer and the mannequins were in view everyone fell quiet. It was incredibly unnerving, there was a mild sense of revulsion and while it eventually faded away nearing the damn things was initially difficult. You could see the apprehension on people's faces as they tried to pose with the mannequins for pictures.

I definitely believe the uncanny valley is real because of it. You ever see someone and immediately get the sense that something is 'wrong' with them? Like they're not all there, like they creep you out and you don't quite get why? IMO that's what uncanny valley feels like, it must have some sort of biological root oriented in self preservation.

Nah, JP had full raptor suits made for guys to wear. They ran around hunched over and only able to control the neck, while other guys used wireless servos and shit to animate everything else on the suit.

While there are some full body CGI raptors in the movie, alot of scenes are actually just a guy in a really fucking nice looking rubber suit. Japanese Godzilla BTFO.

Shrek 2 still holds up, watched it again the other day and now I got most of the jokes and references.

I honestly think that Dreamworks makes a genuine attempt to raise the bar while Pixar and Disney have become complacent. Dreamworks now feels so much better at action and scenery, and their character designs have the right balance of cartoonish and realistic, at least for humans.
>>
>>85392243

Parts of it were CGI but yeah a surprising amount wasn't. Porco Rosso > Shrek
>>
>>85394727
The problem with Shrek is that pretty much everything in it was copied by other CGI cartoons ad nauseam, so it doesn't look nearly as fresh as it once did.

>>85401050
Apples > oranges
>>
>>85401312
It's basically the same film
>rips and homages classics
>features a main character who is grumpy and fat and weird but very capable in his own right
>who has a crush on a beautiful woman
>the usual hero of these stories is now the villain(shrek 2, sure, but still)

Porco Rosso was a better subversion of the tropes while Shrek started being a cheeky parody and ending up the very thing it was parodying.

I would have never thought to compare them in that way ever. Porco Rosso is the better film by far, but they have such different aims and aesthetics otherwise.

Like I said, Shrek has some funny jokes but in the end really is cornier than the Disney fair-tale adaptations it's trying to make fun of in the first place.
>>
>>85392608
Reverse parallax.
>>
>>85392579
Anon, grabbing a bunch of other people's models and set designs and everything else and making them hump each other's mouths in an animation studio carefully designed to be as pain free and accessible as possible, is not quite the same as a pixar film. They're still ridiculously expensive because the expectations have gotten much much higher than they were a decade ago.
>>
>>85391295
I think I remember a short story about why the uncanny valley effect exists.

Long story short, vampires were totally real as a bizarre offshoot of humanity. If we're the apex predator on the planet, they were above that. A little faster and stronger, much smarter, but they were entirely dependent on their limited diet.
After the first major climate changes, with mass die-offs of humanity, they couldn't adapt in time and went extinct as their feeding groups did the same.
The "uncanny valley" comes from the slight differences in posture, facial features, and motions that the "vampires" had.

>Captcha: Valley Majoro
>>
>Why don't modern CGI movies look as good?

Modern CGI looks super good, OP. You're been tricked by statistics.

They use CG a lot more now, and that's why you get the feeling you can spot bad CG more. But most of the time you can't.
Even movies with no action scenes, with random people walking in the sidewalk, its almost always a green screen scene and bystandards and crowds are almost always CG.

Take this scene, for example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMxATniTbKc

You might not like the movie or the scene, but come on, you wouldn't have guessed it was THIS MUCH CG.
>>
>>85404596
I definitely believe it is an evolutionary thing, I also believe a lot of horror movie characters that are humans with exaggerated human features such as grey aliens or the cancer that was slenderman are exploiting this. From what I understand this is also why anthropomorphic animals are so common in western cartoons, because they can get away from human looks while keeping human emotions. This is also why characters such as mickey mouse, bugs bunny and sonic the hedgehog wear gloves and shoes, as to prevent the uncanny valley effect to come from seeing human hands and feet on something that isn't human. If they didn't exaggerate the animal humans and tried to make them more human-like, then you get stuff like this.
