Her argument against cross-sections would probably be that the sections would still end up too long to be one bite, which is why I mentioned calculus. Basically, you cross section vertically it like you're thinking about and then cut a slice or two horizontally to make the cross-sections bite-sized. To find the right spots to slice horizontally think of the muffin as laying on its side on an x-y chart with the x-axis in the middle of the muffin. You just need to approximate the functions that describes the body of the muffin (linear) and the crown (some form of exponential equation could approximate it however precisely you want). Then just find the points on the x-axis where the integral of the function are equal to each other, slice at those points, and enjoy.
