This sucks so bad. Ultimately almost every character is a throwaway visual gag and there are too many.

If some competent editor/producer/director were to do a complete overhaul of HS then Karkat would be the perfect POV to follow. He has drive and ambition but is held back by self-loathing. He tries to be aloof from both trolls and human but wants to manage their lives in a way he thinks is best for everyone. Way more compelling and thematically appropriate to the overall idea of the story (building a universe) than John the nobody or Dave the author-insert.

My only hope is that in 10-20 years some intrepid artist will take on the task of rewriting HS to be good, instead of a house of cards.

Why is she a good character again?

I wouldn't say she was overtly Mary-Sueish, it was kind of stealthy(?) There are situations where she does shitty stuff but it's either 1.irrelevant/has zero consequences or 2.never addressed. Like her sending the explosive Sburb copy, not kissing Jane (which she almost did but then was kicked out of the way) and, bullying Dirk for being gay. This kind of thing is a definite Sue trait.

The most suspicious part is that she got so much narrative attention (essentially become one of the two main characters by the end) and yet she never gets any development after the "lol alcohol" situation.

I hesitate to call any character a Mary Sue but she's definitely a bad character with definite Mary Sue qualities. It's understandable to like her because she's entertaining but the writing surrounding her situation is just baffling.
