Personally, my biggest complaint isn't that it's ugly, it's that it is just a mashup of Steven and Amethyst features with an extra arm tacked on because why not. All of the other fusions we've seen have been interesting designs in their own right, with visual cues from the originals to draw them together. Sugilite, Opal, Malachite, Sardonyx and Rainbow Quartz all looked like they had a coherent design concept outside of just x+y=z, whereas Smokey is only that and nothing more...

So with next episode being about Steven and Eyeball, this is probably the weakest showing for most of the original three Crystal Gems. The closest Garnet had to a focus episode was the baseball episode, and that was more about how flirty her parts are than Garnet herself. Pearl only got Mr. Greg as major focus, and maybe Gem Hunt.Peridot and Lapis got more focus than those two. Amethyst was the only one to get a rather really good amount of focus with her whole rivalry arc against Jasper.

Smokey Quartz is a visual interpretation of the idea that you don't have to come from good stock to be the best version of yourself there is. Steven is a weird mutant in and of himself, and Amethyst is an overcooked runt. Whatever Smokey Quartz was going to be, it wasn't going to be majestic or pretty or graceful, or even necessarily functional. But the message this arc is about that not being important as long as you can be satisfied with what you are and carve a you-shaped hole for yourself in the world.

My theory is that PD was in charge of gem growth, nurturing and Population. Peri called the earth injectors Era 1 injectors or w/e, implying that they were the first model of injectors. All injectors are Pink. as the rebellion went on PD had to make do with making a beta kindergarten just to get more soldiers which is known because Jasper, a beta gem, was her.

If she only had earth and the moon AND she was in charge of gem growth like I think then I think that earth was her first try at taking gem reproduction off HW and on a planet they could terraform into something that "woulda been great" but would destroy all organic life on the earth.

I don't think she's newer than any other Diamond, I just think her main role was something that didn't require her to leave HW until they figured out how to grow gems on other planets.
