Is Superman a viable action star nowadays?
>>
Of course he is. Any schmuck who acts like Superman is "outdated" has been a fucking moron. There is nothing about Superman's character that is going to go out-of-date any time soon. Those are people who are cynical or don't understand Superman's character. Or otherwise have no idea what they're talking about.

And really, if you want to be honest, Steve Rogers isn't that far off from Superman personality-wise, and look how popular he's been since the MCU.
>>
>>85250047
Difference is that Cap doesn't have plot breaking powers.

For some reason, people think Supes being overpowered makes him boring.
>>
>>85250180
But Superman's powerset is so much more complex than "Is he really OP or not?"

There are so many more factors than that.

Like, there are so many different versions of Superman. You have Golden Age Superman, Silver-Age Superman, post-Crisis, etc. And not all of these have the same power level.

On top of this, it's not like he's never fought enemies or been in scenarios that truly test his limits either. Even back in the Silver-Age, he did run into the occasional foe who could hang with him. Just look at Mongul in his first appearances or Brainiac in his first appearances.

And finally, it all comes down to writing ability anyway. Good writers make his conflict interesting regardless of his power level.
>>
>>85250389
Well the current DCEU Superman is basically a god. He can't even die like the rest of us.
>>
>>85250047
Say what you will about Batman v Superman, but a big theme in it was how Superman was trying to be, well Superman, but the world was too cynical to accept that a ludicrously powerful alien could be a good man.
>>
>>85248646
People here put too much stock in his power level and not enough in his personality. It doesn't matter if they nerf him a little so long as he's charming.

He can fail and stumble, and people will still lap it up. He just can't lack charisma while doing it.

Look at how weak the DCAU version was in comparison. Yet it was still received far better than Snyder's. Why? Because they got the personality down.
>>
>>85250180
>Difference is that Cap doesn't have plot breaking powers.

This is why you make Supermans threats tailor made for him. You want to see something like an army of Kryptonians breaking out of the Phantom Zone, Mr Mxy warping reality or Braniac showing up in a ship that dwarfs the planet in it's size. You're not calling Batman or the Avengers for that. That looks like a job for Superman
>>
>>85252521
All he had to do was speak to a camera and explain himself and it wouldn't have been such a problem. Some people would still doubt him but it would be a tiny percentage.
>>
>>85252605
Exactly.
Problem is, personality seems to be stripped out of protagonists. For many of them they'll either be boring goody-two-shoes or smug cunts.

We need better writers, me thinks.
>>
>>85252511
He's powered down from several different versions from the comics already.

>>85252644
This.

Coming off as all stoic and mopey didn't help either.

Superman really shouldn't hide the way he feels from the world like that. He's too important.
>>
>>85252715
I don't think that's the problem.
I really think the issue is just that Snyderfags only look at the powers and the end result and think that's all that defines the character.

Like the argument seems to be
>He flies, wears an S and saved the world! What more do you want?!
>>
>>85252720
>Superman really shouldn't hide the way he feels from the world like that. He's too important.
I thought if anything he fucking owed Earth an explanation for what the fuck happened. Zod came to Earth and obliterated Metropolis because of him.
>>
>>85248646
He was never a viable action star, he's an invincible statue, the only way to make use of his powers is to heavily cg everything which makes him look even goofier.
This kind of scene cannot happen with him.
https://youtu.be/qXPOl6EjbWg
Half the time in his Zod fight he was making a "is this nigger serious?" face because again, invincible statue.
>>
>>85252874
Even if you want to paint him as blameless (and god knows there's one broken english autist here that does) it's weird that the supposed journalist, who is dating an even more accomplished journalist, and who wants to run a smear campaign against another vigilante didn't *ever* think about trying to shape his own public image at all.
>>
>>85252915

I dunno. I think you can shake a camera around like a maniac to make Supermans fight scenes look more fast based and interesting than they are.
>>
>>85252915
Bats on the other hand can potentially do that, but you need a better writer and choreographer or you get goofy shit like mooks with rifles walking up to him one at a time like this
https://youtu.be/5lowHa27RcQ
>>
>>85253028
Devil's advocate: Evil Supes told them to being him in alive. The 'tracking shot' thing is still stupid.
>>
>>85252775
No they think he does have a personality

Amazing feats of strength or special abilities have always been an attraction, the original Superman movie had the slogan "You'll believe a man can fly",

These days though the audience is very used to this kind of thing, and you need to depend on the plot to give motivations, moral dilemmas, and not simply stunts and action.

It seems as though action is more exhilarating when there's actual risk to the man in action, but you can also make this work when the indestructible man can't afford to make a mistake in saving lives, or the indestructible man is the enemy which the protagonist, an underdog must survive or defeat somehow.
>>
>>85250180
The threat with Superman shouldn't be "can he survive" but rather "can he save everyone"
>>
>>85248646
No. Superman should not be action like punisher or captain america. Superman, because of his powerset shold contrast what it means to live as an ordinary person. It should be hope and caring. Why do you this his best villain is a normal human? Cause his stories shouldn't be about punching
>>
>>85252915
That's because the Zod fight was poorly conceived and was more about destruction porn than showcasing the idea that Superman was up against a physical equal.

90% of what you have to do to fix the Zod fight is to have both of them take battle damage.

For the longest time I couldn't wrap my hand around how the guy that did 300 couldn't figure out the power of showcasing a bleeding god, but then I realized it's because he just adapted 300 by rote and wasn't smart enough to learn anything from it.

>Half the time in his Zod fight he was making a "is this nigger serious?" face because again, invincible statue.
Which was a huge mistake. There was zero tension in that fight because they were basically portrayed as invincible. They punched each other to space and back and neither seemed to have a hair out of place. There should have been blood and some fatigue or battle damage. No wonder people think Superman is boring. They should have done something more like Invincible, where at least members of his own super-powerful race can hurt him.

I dunno. Is Captain America a viable action star nowadays?
>>
>>85253073
That would be fights like Hulkbuster vs Hulk, civilians all around running for their lives and Tony trying to keep Hulk's attention on him. You never quite feel that Tony is in danger except like 2 times when Hulk is just tearing the Hulkbuster armor off piece by piece, but even then it's only a little, but they keep emphasizing that everyone around them is about to die.

Why wouldn't he be? He's the granddaddy of all superheroes.
>>
>>85252915
You absolutely can have fights like that. Superman is not truly invulnerable, anyone who can apply enough force or use red sun radiation can absolutely be a physical threat to him. It's the filmmakers' fault that the Zod fight was bloodless and weak.
>>
>>85248646
He is, if they focus in his humans part, and the part that he is the embodiment of hope.
People love to pretend that he is outdated and the world today is too cynic for a guy like him, but if anything, the current situation today, means that hope is more in demand than ever, to the point of having a joke like Trump, of all people inspiring HOPE in so many people.

People are STARVED for hope, and that's the only thing Snyder wont give to Superman fans.
>>
>>85253368
Does Supes know how to fight hand to hand like that if his power is diminished? 'Applying enough force' is simply super punch vs super punch, which was the Zod fight.
>>
>>85253259
Definitely not, dude wears and American flag and is a goody two shoes. How would a character like that ever be popular with normies? No one would take him seriously.
>>
>>85253028
>That one guy who almost fucks up the scene in 2:23 but saves it by falling to his knee for no reason

Reminds me of the banana peel edit in DKR
>>
>>85253446
Go home Zack, the Fountainhead screenplay won't right itself. We're all very excited to see you do justice to Ayn Rand.
>>
>>85253496
...Snyder is making a Fountainhead adaptation?

Kek, that will be a sight to see.
>>
>>85253386

Black Panther should really be in that picture
