Yeah it's been a pretty poor showing in mecha for a few years now, but Gundam and Macross both being disappointing at the same time makes it even worse. If Voltron and the lions were 2D it could be great, there's plenty to like about the action sequences and it's got a good cast. Shiro's character arc is focused on what exactly happened to him while he was in captivity, why he was chosen to be given an augmentation reserved for Galra elite, his guilt over not being able to escape with the other Kerberos mission crew members, and the PTSD that resulted from all of that. Until all of this is dealt with, barring the other Kerberos crew members being found because that's more of Pidge's thing, they won't kill him off.

Forgive the game of thrones comparison, but this is why I was confident that Ned Stark was dead when Joffrey chopped his head off vs why I was confident Jon Snow was going to come back: There were no mysteries surrounding Ned and his arc was done. With Jon, there was still so much to figure out about him.

I think they'll "kill off" Shiro in the sense that he will in fact become a slave to Zarkon and join the bad guys for a time. I could imagine this also playing into the likely revelation that Keith is part Galra and/or Lotor. I'm betting he's going to get captured once that happens and mixing it with Shiro being brainwashed in some way is a good way to up the drama.

Yeah it depends. It'd be boring they both feel conflicted about belonging to the other side but it could also be split up. Depends on what the show does with Keith's origins. Shiro is afraid he's going to hurt his friends or a be liability because of his Galra past, or that he was created as a Galra weapon.

Keith could be torn because of genuine loyalty issues. On the hand he works well but is an outcast in his current home and after the reveal the closest things he has to friends still don't trust and accept him. While the Galra welcome him home with open arms despite their warmongering ways, and the only reason he was separated from them was during some sort of battle or accident, and they've been looking for him all this time. Happiness and belonging among assholes or doing the right thing even if people might hate and fear you.

I want Keith to have a personality beyond super serious angsty protag. Lance might be annoying right now but he has the foundation of a more balanced character as they explore his self-worth and loneliness issues, and besides that side of him will probably tone down as the series becomes more series.

Knights of Sidonia worked it well so much so that I liked the style quite a bit, I still like Ghost in the Shell Innocence's use of it especially for early 2000s, Appleseed Alpha is ridiculously good in some spots and Unicorn is deceptive in how well it used CG sometimes. Those are pretty much the only standout examples I can think of. Whereas most CGI is used because of complete laziness or incompetence. I know people like to cry budgetary reasons but I've seen studios under the gun pull off wonderful things without slapping in a CGI model so I don't buy that all the time.

However I can be rather forgiving and even love how bad CGI can get. And I know that it is cheap as fuck to use CG so studios with shoestring budgets are going to use it. And I will laff eternally.

Samurai Flamenco is the Deadly Premonition of anime. Speaking of Mirs animation versus a lot of anime, am I alone in thinking Mir does better fight choreography? I know ultimately that's not so much the studio as it is the director, but still. A lot of anime fight scenes are just overly flashy shit with rapid cuts and so much shaking of the camera, it makes you wonder if Michael J Fox was directing. Whenever /a/ does a "post good fight scenes" thread, I cringe inside.

I like that all the stuff the ATLA and Korra people did was still based somewhat in reality, even with the crazy superpowers. Not to mention, they didn't overly rely on spazzing out camera angles.

Final arc was all about the main character learning what it means to love, the ending of the last episode involves him making a naked marriage confession to Goto so he can get over his dead no gf, and they literally got gay married in the phone game. It's hard not to take that at face value.

It's like comparing martial arts films to hollywood films fight scenes. Key is usually wider shots, pans and keeping both fighters in frame. Which is much harder to animate and draw than focusing on one character doing cool shit then cutting to the other character dodging said cool shit and countering with their own. But never the twain shall meet since it's way easier that way.


Sword of the Samurai, studio Bones stuff, utotable usually has very clear and enjoyable fights but sometimes it gets a bit clusterfucky. Kiritsugu vs Kirei is still godlike to this day. Broken blade had some amazing fights as well even though it's mecha stuff. There's of course good examples out there but yeah a lot of anime fights are rather terrible.

Yeah, it makes up for the fact that the actual animation frames are kinda herky-jerky and rely on shortcuts like heavy blur and motion lines. That's why the fight scenes are good, not because they're super fluid and motion-heavy like Imaishi's stuff, but because the strong storyboarding of the moves allows them to look really nice even if viewed as a series of stills.

The shakefest with closeups comes from Saving Private Ryan I think. And it's a classic case of one person uses it right, and others abuse it.

I actually think the shaky style can be interesting in a war scene context, if used properly. It can give a feeling of urgency, and gives the illusion that you are actually in the shit with the characters. Like in Saving Private Ryan.

But a lot of people use it when it's not needed, to hide stunt doubles, choreography fuckups, or simple bad choreography.

Slow motion suffers this too. It can be used quite effectively, but it seems like once The Matrix hit, it became a fucking meme to throw in slow motion.
