They found a profitable formula

>Princess that's sassy and rebellious who has youth, beauty and money, but dreams of something MORE
>Flawed but quirky male protagonist who must work and change himself to earn the love of the princess
>Villain character who gets a song number
>Big broadway style musical numbers
>Villain dies horribly at the end
>One movie a year, no exceptions

The 80s era of Disney may not have been great, but at least it yielded some experimentation.

That's when they finally started the one a year thing Walt wanted to do back in the 40's Before that it was maybe 2 a decade.

Just watch Waking Sleeping Beauty.

The renaissance started in 1985 with Gummi Bears, so not late 80s.

LM, but Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company helped set the gears in motion.

The old Disney people either left or died off and the new people tried to do things a little differently.

For years after Walt died, the movies were still dominated by his people trying to make movies (live action or animation) exactly the way Walt would have done it. The new corporate culture at the company in the '80s made it more like a conventional Hollywood studio but also caused it to stop imitating Walt.

Plus there was new competition in the '80s from the likes of Bluth and Amblin so they had to step up their game.
