I'd like to see a crossover between The Boys and Strong Female Protagonist. They are quite similar thematically, and deal with what would happen if superpowers were dumped onto fallible and realistic individuals that is less than capable of living up to the awesome responsibility, and how society would be different as a result. They also have some plot elements in common.

It's an interesting panel because, knowing the twist, it's even clear his attempts at a split personality are entirely an affectation. He's purposefully, consciously acting like he's talking to himself Gollum style to figure out why he can't seem to be a legitimate monster.

Just a wee bit. It is in stark contrast to all the other things he ever reacts to, and perhaps the only real victory over Vought America in the end.

Because you want to make sure that motherfucker is dead.
>>
>>
>>
>>85147525
You know, it struck me during this that his backstory turned out to be true, in the end. I had figured, reading through it, that it was another thing he did to play Hughie. That said, I never did read his backstory mini when I read this the first time, so there may be some surprises in store still. I don't think the main story ever actually addresses the specifics.
>>
>>
>>85148609
>>85148682
It's what makes the whole thing so juicy.
He's nothing BUT corporate.
So he may as well be the bad product he sells. Potentially forever.
It's a very special kind of hell, and it's beautiful.

>>
>>
>>85148773
I meant specifically the story he told Hughie. I had assumed he was lying about parts of it or it was a different tragedy. I figured there was still a motivating tragedy, but that it could easily be something other than what he explicitly said.

Butcher's entire game is playing the people around him with this sort of shit.

>>
>>85149360
I think Ennis has explicitly made the same critique of Captain America in those exact words. I rather disagree with him, everyone fucking knows the difference between capes and Real American Soldiers. The former is not somehow erasing the latter. Fuck, the whining on about "who will remember them?" is a bit dumb, considering the vast, vast amount of American media lionizing the war and their efforts in it.

If there's one thing us Americans love, it's our soldier stories.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>85149410
Don't know about Ennis and Cap, but in the context of The Boys I think it makes sense. Vought puts out a shitload of comics about how capes save the world and are the heroes, and Mallory finds it kinda disgusting, as he really is a war veteran and all that. Unsure if VA got to publish comics about heroes in the war, or if they covered it up like the Seven at 9/11.

He loaded the gun, maybe or maybe not knowing the hands it would fall into, he didn't pull the trigger.
I don't care for his behavior, but I'm just saying.
>>
>>
>>85149472
Oh no, it's perfectly fine in the story. I just get triggered when I think an author is going from "an interesting story in a fictional universe" to "no no, this is a serious point I'm making about real life." The only reason I think anything of it here is because I know what Ennis has said elsewhere, in interviews.

And Stillwell survives it all just to keep doing the same goddamn thing.
>>
>>
>>85149715
It's better not to read The Boys as a serious sort of anything. Just a fun Ennis ride. Not that he makes that easy, sometimes. Easier other times, though.

Their whole universe is almost an edgier version of ours. An actually mentally retarded, might as well be a corporate pod person, presidential hopeful, rather than a merely poor at press events one. An even worse, more one-side catastrophe of military spending, rather than another in a long line of gray area fuck ups with plenty of blame to go around. It's not even a "realistic" take on Superheroes, it's a "what if everyone was as much of a good-for-a-gritty-story-as-possible, unrepentant asshole." It's just as fake a narrative as the one its taking the piss out of. It's all in service of a tone for entertainment.

Sometimes the serious lines work, usually when its introspection on the human condition over anything more pointed.

Just look at Kirby's last son and young Stan Lee.
>>
>>85150053
That's actually the most fucked up thing so far, I think.
>>
>>85146637
those faces on the last panel, holy shit.
>>
>>85153503
That "rumor" actually comes from a stand-up comedian routine. But trust it to /co/ to take a joke literally, much like "frank miller only writes whores", "alan moore hates everything", "warren ellis has two cocks", etc.
>>
>>85154861
Is the last one not true?

I still want to know if he was a piece of shit before he saw Butcher's photos or if those photos drove him over the edge

I can't help but notice, that in the first panel, they just copy pasted the last page in and extended it to the sides with new art.
>>
>>85148732

>White Phosphorus

I honestly didn't know they used this in WW2, but according to wiki 20% of the Allies explosive munitions did.

Garth Ennis really fucking hates Cape stories in real wars...and he's not wrong either
>>
>>85149410
Many writers of cap, particularly the vietnam era ones, shit all over the troops and have a bizzare, hackneyd concept of the millitary and use of it.

>You asshole.

I think you meant to say "You arsehole".

So all the characters in SFP can get raped? I'm down with that.

I'm not up to current porn slang, but what the fuck exactly is that supposed to be?

I love Frenchies napoleon references. A bit later he actually has a napoleon hat and wears his arm like he is famous for.

>well maybe if you were packing the gear to do the job

Odd thing to say, since we know from Herogasm that Stormfront does in fact have quite a gear packing.

>>
>>85149251

Work the shaft, Ennis.
>>
>>85158230
Yeah, I can understand it. I like Cap as a distillation of everything that's good and noble about my country and all, but seeing some kiddie idealization of warrior-gods go through places like Guadalcanal or Normandy or any other place that could be described as hell on earth is just flat out absurd. Cap comics didn't show marines with their balls cut off and shoved in their mouths or the effects of an 88mm shell on a squad of teenagers or anything horrible like that.
>>
>>85149410
>>85150187
>>85149558

Ennis is a cunt; supers are harmless fantasy; humans have always told stories about larger-than-life characters; Herakles, Paul Bunyan, David and Goliath, Joe Magarac, Jack The Giant-Killer, Pecos Bill, Robin Hood, King Arthur, John Henry, Beowulf, Thag Simmons, all that shit. Ennis sucks leprous pig-cock on this point.

>>
>>85151287
So that no one knows who he really is.....DUN DUN DUUUUUNNNNNNNNN
>>
>>85162404
I would agree with you. Except that in the recent years before The Boys Capes had become gods (read DC more than Marvel). Ennis likes to take people down a notch and show the human nature of things. He is a gadfly on nature. And in many cases gadflies are made to drink hemlock. This is the reason why many people hate Ennis and others who point out others' failings.
>>
>>85151331

But why does he need to actually fly one?

these two are the best

He knows what it means. He also knows that Hughie doesn't know what it means, because it's a military term and Hughie never was, but Mallory was. It's Butcher's subtle way of saying he knows precisely what Hughie was up to while he was gone.
>>
>>85163158
oh, so literal ashtray. Disappointing...
>>
>>85160592
Perhaps she meant the gear actually important for the whole baby making thing, like working sperm or something.
>>
>>85165285
It's likely it was from the very beginning. He may not have meant for her to take the specific fall he did when he started, but I doubt he ever had any intentions aside from making use a valuable asset, however that would turn out to be.

Middleschoolers.
>>
>>85151495

Hughie's looking at Action Comics #1, Superman's debut. Below that is Superman #1.

Top row is Flash #123, "Flash of Two Worlds", introducing the Golden Age heroes as Earth 2. Next is Amazing Spider-Man #50, where Peter gives up being Spider-Man. Far right is Amazing Fantasy #15, first appearance of Spider-Man.

Middle row is Crisis on Infinite Earths #7, death of Supergirl. Next is Amazing Spider-Man #39, Green Goblin's identity reveal.

Bottom is Batman #404, where Batman: Year One by Frank Miller started.
