This guy was at FanimeCon 2016 (back in May) and hosted the RWBY panel. At the end of the panel, he showed this off and was talking about how it was made because he loved RWBY so much and wanted to show it to Monty before he died.

Can someone explain the FPS to me?
When drawing anime by hand, single-digit FPS is understandable, but if it's all computer-generated is there any good reason not to have it at 30 or 60? Or 244 for shits and giggles.

Rendering 1080p at 60fps in real time is another thing, videos are just playback. There is no complex lighting or physics calculations hogging resources.

It's a stylistic thing. It's meant to give 3d models a more 2d animated look. It can work, but only if you use the technique properly. A good example of proper use is Guilty Gear Xrd.

Other than that it's kind of sad. RWBY's character designs are at least pretty unique and recognizable; these assholes just went for the most generic animu cast imaginable.

And on the off chance that they actually believe in this project and it's not just a cash grab aimed at the RWBY fanbase...that's even sadder, because they have no idea what they're getting into. RT barely managed to put together Volume 1 with Monty and a decent amount of funding. These guys have no funding and they almost certainly don't have a Monty.

A while back there was an interview with the guy who wrote this, who I think now runs that publishing company, and when asked about it he said something along the lines of "Since there's no chance of Jojo coming to the west, I though I might try to expose them to something like it." Which I read as "This is never coming here, no one can stop me."

I don't really know a lot about 3D animation but I suspect using a full-fledged game engine/SDK to do it isn't gonna give you a particularly efficient pipeline compared to using actual 3D animation software. (The RTX panel was a different story since they had to render it all in real time.) Plus they already have switched over to Maya completely.

Also that game sure does look nice, but I can't say it looks particularly nicer than the Volume 4 trailer. It's kind of stiff-looking outside of the actual gameplay, actually.

The one advantage I could think of to using UE4 for the animation pipeline is to make it easier to share assets with and do in-engine cutscenes for future RWBY games.
