The real detriment to the story was vriska and the doomed timeline plot point in general.

Dancestors existed for pretty superficial reasons, which makes it all the worse when Aranea's whole spiel was just to doom the timeline so john could do a superpower to bring back vriska, when vriska was already around anyway, so that vriska was binned off.

John as Heir of Breath his character arc is gaining (or inheriting) freedom, he starts off as someone trapped in his home, and taking orders from others, to end as someone who is able to travel through the story freely
the list goes on, but point is he only needs to remember what x class is suppose to do, and what x aspect is suppose to be. and there's a character
this especially fits for Vriska as Thief of Light
her whole purpose as a character is to steal the spotlight, she even stole it from herself. of course this is annoying if you hate Vriska, but Hussie is only following the formula he made for himself

Undertale will be remembered for years to come and will likely pop up often on nostalgia lists for a lot of people. It also had a decent lasting message in it, using the concept of meta to its actual extent, instead of for a toast-dull irony jerkoff.

Homestuck is already out of popular mind, and will be for good, and its game, with a boring premise and setting, is stillborn.
