"I am Gotham" part four

Tom King hasn't had enough suffering in this run thus far. Time to fix that!

It's still not clicking. The pacing of this issue was so weird and this book has none of the subtly King offers in his writing. It's nowhere near the quality of Grayson though. Grayson was a normie pleaser and at the same time intelligent. This book is neither. What this book is, is questioning readers intelligence by questioning Batman's intelligence.

>>
>>85109994
>>I've only known you for few weeks but I think you could be best suited for Gotham.
>>BTW I never ask for League's help in Gotham crises, those who are proven metahumans.

These are weird criticisms. Do you remember the #1?

The whole point is that Justice Leaguers would be too busy doing their own shit to specifically save Gotham.

A superman-level hero who's home is in Gotham is exactly who Batman was looking for. And that's what he got -- it's not really his fault that they worse at his job than he expected.
>>
>>85110004
Kek, why are you so triggered?
>>
>>85110236
Fair enough, still don't care for Gotham's development. This would work better overtime but here it's hastily put together predictable outcome driven solely by plot conveniences and I don't really have much stakes in Gotham to give a shit.
>>
>>85109560
Would love to see that.
>>
>>85110028
Catwoman I'm ok with being a good guy, she leaned that way for a long time and it's kinda ridiculous to put her alongside the other villains of Gotham who do truly fucked up shit while she just steals things. The other Sirens, yeah.
>>
>>85109380
I'm a fan of King's, but his writing seems so flat in this, and then all of a sudden there are these little great moments and glimpses of hope, and then it becomes flat again until another glimpse.

Snyder seemed to have depth, but King's writing is just one layer or maybe two, and that's about it, and it pains me.

The comic always looks cool, though, so I just wish his writing could be as cool too.
>>
>>85109285
So another black guy/blonde white woman romance incoming? I feel like black comic characters date them than any other type, lol.
>>
>>85109271

>>

>>
>>85110711

>>
>>85109714
GOTHAMURDER
>>
>>85109380
Because the first 2 issues were pretty bland. Writing for the trades and all.
>>
>>85110028
honestly I like all of them better as heroes(Catwoman's never been a convincing villain, Ivy's amount of usable plots is minimal, and Harley I like too much to want her to be a villain, especially one tied to as toxic a character as modern Joker), Batman has plenty of other female villains that can be used, even if they're kinda obscure(I could see some interesting things being done with New52/Rebirth versions of Lady Clay or Orca)

also this arc is amazingly awful, probably the worst of the Rebirth titles I've read so far
>>
>>85109426
>n52 Freeze
>no n52 Riddler
ffs
>>
>>85109334
Thats bullshit. It contrasts Superman and gotham the inexperienced hero. Superman's presence alone should fix shit no matter what city he is in.

Also to anon who wants to cite that stupid No Man's Land issue, don't. It was the biggest case of bat wankery I have ever seen.

>>85109442
>Twenty eight
What?
>>
Anyone else feel like Gotham's development into Murderman willing to destroy the city was a bit too...sudden and rushed?

The book is pretty entertaining, but it kinda falls apart when you think about it too much.
>>
>>85110028
Catwoman is just a kleptomaniac cat burglar who doesn't kill anybody. Harley is a task force x lackey.
>>
>>85111533
It's Psycho Pirate and Hugo Strange fault. Reread the previous issue
>>
This is entertaining so far and this has been the best issue so far of this run. But this looks more like setup and King still seems to be finding his stride.
>>
>>85111627
>looks more like setup

well, yeah. it's the 4th issue.

>>85109285

>>
>>85109488
just call the justice league ffs
>>
>>85111767
I'm not talking about Alfred. I'm talking about Bruce.
>>
>>85111717
It's certainly a story in itself, but many writers use the first arc of longer runs for introducing characters, the direction they'll be going in and for setting up things.
>>
>>85109319
Isn't this like the second batmobile he's totalled in as many issues?
>>
Didn't Tom say he'd base his writing on the experiences he had when he was part of the CIA? I see nothing hinting at it. Or did he deal with brainwashed men of murder?
>>
>>85109380
he writes Batman really flat. Pretty much no emotion 90% of the time.
>>
>>85112232
Really? I find his Batman's personality better than Snyder's, who wrote every character as one note. King is the complete opposite of Snyder.
>>
>>85109703
I think the weird pacing is more linked to the limited amount of pages than anything else. This part of the story would work better with more pages but not to the point of needing 2 issues.
>>
>>85111533
>have a hero complex
>end up killing 27 people out of the blue
>your parents get killed the same night

nah, it makes sense for him to snap
I think people are too used to heroes witnessing so much fucked up shit and getting past it
>>
>>85112376
>limited amount of pages
Rebirth books have 20 pages as opposed to standard 22. Not that big of a difference.
>>
>>85112175
>Or did he deal with brainwashed men of murder?
>islamic fighters
>>
>>85109242
>>85109261

>>85109328
>>85109345
uh, Bruce, how did you THINK that line of accusations and questioning would go?
>>
>>85110028
All three are not in Gotham currently.
>>
>>85111924
I have wondered the same. It seems oddly formal and creates distance between Bruce and Duke -- maybe on purpose?

Or maybe they want to distinguish him from the previous Robins as someone who is of equal status (i.e., not a child) and should be thus addressed as 'Mr'.

Anyway, I choose to interpret is a means to keep Duke apart from the family.
>>
>>85112166
I think this might become a recurring joke at this point, Batman having enough money to cover the costs of a new Batmobile every 3 days.
>>
>>85109400
>Damn Bat-man is behind you

>>
Wait, I missed last issue. What happened?
>>
>>85112797
Hugo Strange is using Psycho Pirate to control the Gothams
>>
>>85109703
I've not been a big fan of King's Batman so far, but pacing is the most misused word on this board. Most of it comes from /tv/ using words from a completely different medium.
This issue was nicely paced and structured compared to his other issues.
>>
>>85109328
>Lift it out of the air

How would you even go about doing that?

Is King losing his touch?
>>
>>85112440
Well, just after this >>85109442, a page showing Batman arriving to Gotham's parents home and founding them dead and Hank hurting a soldier would build the tension more effectively before Bruce's monologue on the next page. And it would allow the artist to show Gotham's reaction to Batman's speech, how uneffective it is.

A few pages more can allow more build up here and there.
>>
I think the story pacing is fine. Easily my favorite Rebirth book.

I join the ones saying they're not feeling this. The series so far isn't...bad, but it's not as good as I'd expect from King. Guy made practically the best comics the big 2 have had in a long time before Batman, and now it's just...average with some great moments.

I think it's because the plot in and out of itself isn't very interesting. Vision, Omega Men and Grayson were all really cool ideas executed very well, while this is "just" superhero story #1513254 . Still well executed, but lacking that inherent spark which made his other works great.

>Batman smiles and cracks his knuckles.
>PP: Too happy! Too happy! Strange! Strange, help me! It's not working!

So,
Gotham shows up
Batman takes him under his cape
Gotham becomes controlled by Psycho Pirate
Under PP's control Gotham kills 27 of Wallers troops
One of those troops sees who Gotham is, discovers his identity, and kills his parents.
And that leads to the still PP controlled Gotham on this page here, right?
>>
>>85116731
Yeah. It could have been used a better transition, but it's still pretty clear what happened

>There's nothing that suggests that he's still under Psycho Pirates influence
The fact that Gotham Girl is still under his influence does. Stop forcing your bullshit ideas and ignoring parts of the comic to make them work.
>>
>>85116958
Sure he did what he did under their influence and it probably is all part of Stange's master plan, that doesn't mean King, the guy who loves writing morally grey characters, isn't trying to portray Gotham's development as genuine. Until plot is clear enough you see what you want to see and I see what I want to see, eh boyo?
>>
So /co/ which Rebirth titles are you enjoying the most right now? I think DC is on the right track with their comics this time around.
>>
>>85117081
The plot is really clear, you are just stupid
>>
>>85117094
Nightwing, New Super-Man, Flash, Green Arrow and to some extent Superman. I know All Star Batman will be a blast because we're getting good Romita Jr and premise is fun, Supergirl and Night of Monster Men and new Middy book will be awesome because Orlando. And I'm actually looking forward to Teen Titans.
Still my top 3 DC books aren't even mainline DC. Sheriff is the best book on the market period and Flintstones and Future Quest are all better/more enjoyable than anything Rebirth so far.

From a technical perspective this is a very good issue. It has all the beats you'd expect from tom king and this batman arc but ultimately its not a problem of plot pacing as some people are saying, its a problem of emotional pacing. This comic has felt cold and distant for a while, as if the characters are going through the motions. Hell, I felt nothing when reading the tragic parts of this issue. Finch is definitely putting in the effort here to try and score this tragedy as more tragic than it comes off, but King can surely do better than this. He never lets the characters linger on the bad or the good moments, so everything moves by way too fast without a moment to sit. It's not forcing the reader to sit down and think about the circumstances in any way, like omega men and vision do.

When/Where was this confirmed?
>>
>>85147889
http://www.newsarama.com/30496-tom-king-psycho-pirate-rebirth-follow-up-batman-5-s-surprise.html

>Newsarama: Tom, I'd like to talk about Batman #4 in a minute, but first can we talk about Psycho Pirate? Why did this villain interest you as someone who you wanted to use during your first arc?

>Tom King: There are two answers. The first answer is what "Rebirth" is about and what it's been about since Geoff first called on the phone - it's about re-joining the DCU, all the books tying into each other, continuity coming back in a big way. And I'm a big continuity nerd. And the idea of using a villain who's not traditionally a Batman villain - he's kind of a Justice League villain - in a Bat-book very much appealed to me.

>So we're saying, like, Batman has to deal not just with these crazy people in Arkham, but he has to deal with the entire DCU.

>On a personal level, I first encountered Psycho Pirate - I was a little old for Crisis on Infinite Earths, but I re-read it insanely over and over again, and seeing him there and what a huge role he played, I was like, why does this kind of weeny, kind of cowardly man - how does he challenge, and why does the Anti-Monitor need him? And then you slowly realize that he has this very specific power that makes him one of the most powerful people in the entire DCU.

>And that always struck me. As a kid, I remember just being thrill by that, the fact that this sort of sickeningly weird guy could somehow hold the entire universe hostage and kill Flash. So… I was always just fascinated with that character.
>>
>>85147889
>>85147969

>Nrama: Well, you mentioned Crisis, and Psycho Pirate was pretty important in that event and afterward because of another ability he has. And with the fallout from the Watchmen-related stuff in Geoff's DC Universe: Rebirth #1, it's interesting to see Psycho Pirate show up now. Is it right to suspect he ties into that?

>King: Yeah, you're too smart for me. I'm trying to hide something I should be hiding.

>The fact that, as established in Grant Morrison's Animal Man, the Pirate remembers continuity that no longer exist, is one of the appeals of having him in this book, and tying him into the story spine of the greater DCU.

>That's pretty vague, but that's the best I can do.
>>
>>85147969
>>85147996
>Nrama: Dude, that's not really that vague. It's important that he's encountering Batman, who is one of only a handful of characters who are aware of any continuity glitches. That's another good reason to use Psycho Pirate in your title?

>King: Yeah, it is very cool. We're working very closely together - I'm working with Pete Tomasi, Scott Snyder and Josh Williamson - tying all these people together.

>So what you're looking at over the next two years is the impact of that sort of first Flashpoint story and how it plays out.

>We all know where we're going. We're free to play, but we all know where we're going.
>>
>>85147996
>in Grant Morrison's Animal Man, the Pirate remembers continuity that no longer exist
Oh shit, I forgot about that.
>>
>>85148014
>I'm working with Pete Tomasi

Rebirth is doomed
>>
>>85148115
It was actually COIE itself that established it. Last few pages are about how everyone's memories of it drifted off but he was the only one who remembered the multiverse and all.
>>
>>85148014
>I'm working with Pete Tomasi, Scott Snyder and Josh Williamson
> Not with Dan Abnett

for some reason I'm worried.
>>
>>85148214
Probably after the Wallys meet he'll be in that book more.
>>
>>85148159

He's doing a good job on Superman.
>>
>>85148277
And I say this meaning that Abnett is likely just going to tease a Rebirth detail rather than have his book be all about that after the first arc. So once he finishes he can pass the plot thread off to others like the main Flash book and just focus on telling stories with his team. So if it heavily involves Wally then it will happen in the main Flash book.

If you mean you wanted him on JSA or LoSH then I don't know. Maybe he's just not that invovled with them.

There is absolutely nothing interesting about Titans besides the Rebirth story with Wally. If they drop that plotline, the book will die.

I guess this also explains why Booth is constantly teasing a Wally solo.
>>
>>85148452
I don't agree with that. Wally is the hook but the character interactions are decent in themselves. And there's other continuity to smooth over not directly related to his return, like I think Priest mentioned in his blog that he's been talking with Abnett about a crossover there.

Wally probably does deserve a solo just based on demand and it would make sense once the lesser books (mainly Cyborg) need to be moved from double-shipping back to monthly or if they cut down on the number of minis.

Once Wally's status quo is settled he'll either move to upcoming JLA or get a solo in 2017. He was never a big part of Titans so I guess it only makes sense to boot him out after a while.

Ew please no.

Priest is GOAT and Abnett's pretty good himself, so I see no problem.

I agree. Duke's been bled into the Batfamily at a comfortable rate.

a double page spread is more effective when you are reading an actual real world comic book

Lane says "The damn Bat-Man" because he is a tough military guy and also doesn't know hes called Batman, and Waller is repeating what he says to mock him.

he can't write naturalistic dialogue, it is hard for a melodramatic and unrealistic monologue like that to carry the same weight as an honest and realistic human conversation

it clearly said the guy was "out of his mind" through either psycho pirate influence or the trauma of seeing his whole unit killed in seconds
