This week's episode could've been better. It wasn't completely bad, but it fell flat on many levels. Maybe it's the weakest episode so far on season 2.

Also, did anyone else notice the parallel that Star is becoming less reliant on the wand while Ludo is becoming more reliant/capable with it? Could this be an important theme when the two characters meet later in the season?

Feel like a broken record saying this by now, but the promo gives me a good feeling about the episodes next week. It finally looks like we're getting a one off side character who's actually interesting. Hopefully she can add something to the Star and Marco dynamic that the other one off characters didn't.

Nothing is worse than Fetch and Red Belt, those two are real bottom of the barrel episodes.

The episodes this week were alright if nothing else, they had good parts to them, a good number of the jokes got a chuckle out of me. It's just the same issues that other episodes this season have had, namely too much exposition that's told not shown, random one off characters who add nothing and hog screen time for absolutely no benefit and the main fucking dynamic which made the show good in season 1, that being Marco and Star's dynamic, has barely had any screen time.

See, it feels to me like they're fucking up their own story line with all these episodes focusing on not using the wand too much. Star should have been using her wand too much early on and have the effects of the cleaving shown to the viewers. Things like spells not going like they should, random bursts of energy and other negatives that reinforce that something bad is happening. That way it doesn't have to be blatantly spelled out with straight forward dialogue which kills the pace of episodes. Then Star can learn much more gradually to let go of the wand's influence and use her own abilities in a much more natural manner, as opposed to seemingly learning all that stuff and then abusing the wand when it's on the fritz.

I like how the opinion of him shifted so dramatically from last year, when everyone said he was he worst.

I almost wonder if they decided to make him a badass after the first episode aired in January 2015 and people bitched about "cliché villain" or whatever to some of the crew members, because that would line up pretty well with when they started working on the second season (February or March). But then they showed all the materials for his wand in the last shot of the finale, so maybe not.

I think most people liked him to be perfectly honest, he was one of the few secondary characters people cared about. He offered direction for episodes and had a ton of comedic moments to boot.

I think the big issue with him was that he became a joke tier villain later in to the season to pump up Toffee. He was most enjoyable early on when he actually posed a threat and seemed somewhat collected relative to his minions, obvious not too collected as the guy was still an idiot, but enough to be head-idiot.

I've just realized one thing...
As we've seen, Star's magic is now influenced by her mood: when she's being flustered, her magic comes out 'wrong', when she's focused onto something (like for example getting her friend out of trouble) it comes out right.

So, it comes naturally to think that it's somewhat of an allegory for growing up: in S1 she had an endless, stable source of magic, while in S2 she has to 'work' for it, for the first time in her life. And then it came to me I've already read this plot.

Marco and Star are like family.

I don't really watch cartoons that much but I've been enjoying Star Vs. Star and Marco are really likeable and they both get their fair share of slapstick and flaws. Voice acting is pretty solid with few exceptions and Toffee was great villain, where as Ludo was less so.

However his new character arc looks very promising, though seeing his wand is half of Star's, I guess he ends up losing it eventually so Star can reform her wand.

I think the main issue was that he was used too much in season 1. He showed up in about half the season 1 episodes. Did Ice King show up that much in Adventure Time's first season? Did Vexus show up that much in My Life as a Teenage Robot's first season? Or Mojo Jojo in the Powerpuff Girls'?

I think the weirdness is because we are in the middle of a period of "peace" caused by Ludo's forces being gone, in season 1 the normal everyday eps were often invaded by Ludo and his forces, now those are gone for the time being so is mostly eps of just Star and Marco with no monster fights.

I am okay with how the early eps of the season have gone, tho I find weird just how many one off characters are appearing, I mean Season 1's one off are among fan favorites (like Queen Pixie) so its nothing new, but it happens so often in such a small amount of eps is hard not to notice!

I heavily disagree, those two could not be any MORE different. (lol typo)

Toffee was introduced simply as someone competent and manipulative, he was an adult among children and was manipulating all around him for his own goals pretty much from the start. He was never hyped as something that he isn't and the reason he "won" was not because he being a powerful being but because his plan was very well done.

Compare to Bill, a character whose the show was screaming left and right how powerful he is, how he is watching EVERYTHING and was likely manipulating every single darn thing that was happening in the show and how if he ever got a physical body it would be all over since he is all powerful.

And yet in the end he always lost for his own stupidity, he being all seeing was complete bullshit since she gets blindsighted over and over in the show and there's tons of stuff he doesnt know. And despite being an all powerful god he still loses to two kids and two old men. All that buildup to some villain that would be better compared to season 1 Ludo.

And all Toffee needed to be a good villain was be competent at what he does, none of this all powerfull all seeing GOD bullshit Bill got that was all talk and no payout.

I like the general theory myself. The idea that he was from one of the lower noble houses and was so adept at the Mewnie style of fighting that he rose through the ranks, enough to be a viable prospect for the queen who fell for his rugged manliness. That obviously ties in with Queen Butterfly having a thing for adventurous guys in her youth, or perhaps she just flat out has a wild taste that she keeps relatively hidden.

These two episodes were alright, but the pacing in this show (as well as the overall comedic style so far this season) still bothers me. Everything always feels too awkwardly executed to be entertaining.

Also, the mom is still incredibly hot. I was disappointed we didn't get to see her in these two episodes.

Comedy is subjective, sure, but I just can't find most of these jokes funny. They just make it seem like the writers are trying too hard to be as weird as possible, and the audience is automatically supposed to find that funny. I'm not sure about the general consensus of the fanbase, but Season 2 hasn't been very funny so far, even in the scenes that are supposed to be.

I can't really identify what's so weird about the pacing, but it has always stuck out to me since Season 1. Part of the problem used to be the unusual lack of background music, but I've gotten used to it and have come to find that the lead-in to each scene just kind of draaags, with mediocre jokes that I feel could only reach a specific audience.

The underlying story with the wand and Ludo and all is still intriguing, but I personally just don't enjoy the execution of it all.

I don't want the same plot done over and over like 50 times, but I don't mind characters making similar kinds of mistakes if those mistakes are linked to their character/personality. It only feels like a misstep in characterization to me when there have been several episodes showing a character's consistent development away from that, then they do something dumb and it's just treated as "eh that's just how they are" when that's no longer the case.

I like how I can genuinely relate to Marco. His status as a main character, or his particular moral situation within the show, never feels forced. Each character feels organic, which is more than can be said for other cartoons of this generation.

Ludo hired him to make his operation more competent. But Toffee knew that Ludo's minions are just holding him back: so long as he can rely on them, he doesn't need to grow as a villain.

So toffee strips him of everything. Castle, minions... even the wand. And, reduced to absolute poverty, Ludo gets back to his villainous roots: he intimidates wild beasts into being his thugs and channels his rage into power.

Ludo is becoming a genuine threat. And it's Toffee who put him there.
