I now just want a Airman comic. I kind of preferred it to anything past book 5 of Artemis Fowl.
>>
>>85055040
That's where you re introduce Minerva and have her team up with Opal, as her much less evil human benefactor.
>>
>>85060708
Same, but I hope they get a different artist. This artist is okay for the weird fairy stuff, but I would prefer a more grounded art style for Airman.
>>
>>85060876
Pls no. Minerva was boring and Opal coming back yet again would be Naraku tier bullshit.
>>
>>85061056
I think he meant directly after book 5.

Having Minerva would have been a decent way to anchor the series and stop it from ridiculously escalating the way it did.
Though given her arc in 5 was how she learned the hard way why you don't go in over your head just because you're smart, I'd agree that having her as a sidekick to Opal would be a bit daft
>>
despite the books saying otherwise, I always assumed Butler was black, and his sister was Latina. The comic threw me for a loop.

The Opal Deception's graphic novel didn't really do the book justice since it deals with emotions more and the comic just didn't get enough in depth to do it justice, but the rest of the series would be perfect for graphic novels.
I doubt we'll ever see them.
>>
>>85061488
...yes.
>>
>>85055186
Wonder how they are going to handle Holly/Artemis. A sizable part of the fanbase/consumers were buoyed by their like of the pairing. You can't put shota in a big Hollywod production. Even in the books it was pretty weird, but at least it was more easily excused. In another thread someone wrote of their dislike for the ship and why Artemis was hard to cast, in short: 'realistically Artemis is a creep that kidnaps a woman and keeps her locked up for ransom and yet later on they're sweet on each other'. Its much easier to excuse/suspend your disbelief if he's just a tot but if you age him up to make the pairing less weird the scenario of the first book is creepier and the pairing is still weird, albeit with more emphasis on Stockholm syndrome instead of shota.
>>
>>85061924
Unless they let us into Artemis' head to show that he does feel guilt about doing that, there will probably be issues. Of course, doing that is harder in a movie than it is in a book without narration.
>>
>>85058607
>>85058664
I'd prefer an animated film over an animated series or live-action movie.

Regardless: Can anyone link the past storytimes? I'll draw some Holly in return.
>>
>>85061924
Even in the books, Artemis and Butler are slightly disturbed by the kidnapping.
All they really need to do is have a concrete scene over it and combine it with the final scene where they swear not to do anything like it again

Is it ever said what her uniforms look like?
>>
>>85062102
I think that can be solved with liberal applications of butler as the father figure.

Firstly they'd have to show audience Artemis is doing all this to find his father and then have sprinkles of dialogue with butler to show their apprehensions and occasional guilt of what they're committing.
>>
>>85061924
But it's the entire point of Artemis' character development. Tween or teen, he starts off as a loner and a creep, gradually gains friends and becomes a better person, which eventually wins him Holly's affection. There's no Stockholm syndrome involved. I don't see why this can't work with a competent writer and director.

>In another thread someone wrote of their dislike for the ship and why Artemis was hard to cast, in short: 'realistically Artemis is a creep that kidnaps a woman and keeps her locked up for ransom and yet later on they're sweet on each other'.

It was more about how hard it would be to make the series a movie for kids.

>I'd be suprised if the film adaptation ever goes through. Even if everyone ignores the stockholm syndrome and straight shota subtext, it's still a children's book that does a lot of things children's movies aren't allowed to do.

>Artemis Fowl is a story about a bad guy, and the story ends with him winning. He's not some cuddly Wreck-It-Ralph villain either. He's a guy who kidnaps a woman, chains her in his basement, and has no qualms about lying to her to fuck with her head. He's pitiable, has some standards, and has occasional bouts of humanity, but any actor who plays the character right would be Alex DeLarge levels of creepy. Even in the third book he's more of an antiheroic enemy mine than a good guy.

>The pacing could translate into a movie, even if some of the internal/external character contrasts couldn't be portrayed. The big problem is that filmmakers don't have the same freedom as authors.
>>
>>85063098
Didn't the Harry Potter book adaptations at some point go pg-13?
>>
>>85063241
Starting from the Goblet of Fire, yes. Half-Blood Prince and the first three were rated PG though.
>>
>>85061135
This is more what I meant, tho I guess you are right, for this to work you'd have to fudge Minerva character development, which I honestly find ok since this way the series can last longer and we can have the best of both worlds, with Minerva taking the place of old Artemis, and good Artemis now having a foil he can play off.

Add some understated love triangle between Minerva, Holly, and Artemis, and you have yourself a much better story than what we got, that can go on longer and have a satisfying ending.
>>
>>85061924
I think I was the one who wrote the post your talking about. >>84941096

It disregarded the Stockholm/ss issues and focused on how Artemis Fowl (the book) does a lot of things a children's movie wouldn't allow.

The protagonist is genuinely creepy, and his actions are even more alienating coming from a child than an adult. He's not a noble thief or a heroic rebel--he commits only one good deed in the book and even Holly questions if he was really being selfless there.

You could make a movie where you round off the harsh edges and make him into a Robin Hood, but they you'd have just another by-the-numbers boy genius story.
>>
>>85063914
>where you round off the harsh edges and make him into a Robin Hood

The core problem is motivation. Artemis justifies his actions by saying that he needs the money to find his father, but there are many less involved methods for someone with Artemis' skills to acquire 40-50 million dollars.

In the book, he gambles the lives of his friends and commits the crime of the millennium because it's the only thing left for him to do to feel thrill or feed his ego. A movie would need to change this to a generic "save the world", and that's a much less interesting motivation.

The kidnapping only got social services off his back because he healed his mother, and that wasn't part of the original ransom plan.

It's also probably easier to fool a few social services bureaucrats for a few months than an elite police squad fielded by an elder race capable of flying, turning invisible, stopping time, and hacking any human device.

Why would a movie NEED to make Artemis a good-intentioned character to work? There are other ways of making a character likeable and entertaining than making them heroic.

The armor / clothing is way too heavy on fan service, but I wouldn't mind her having that face or hairstyles in the movie. Maybe some darker skin...

The wardrobe spread on the left is pretty damn good though. Wish the artist had gone with #4 in the top row for a final design. It's a form-fitting uniform for Frond's sake.

Exposing so much skin to make it sexy isn't just unnecessary. It's BLASPHEMY.

True. Gotham Season 1 David could have done well, but by now, he's already sprouted up.

If anything it makes me realize how much I like the jumpsuit from the comic. The jumpsuit is utilitarian while still being titillating while this is a weird combination of boob window, space marine paulderons, shorts, and thigh boots.

>>85068554
Yes, but not in a children/young adults's movie. You'd either need to sell the idea of a children's movie with a reprehensible character or an adult's movie with a fairies and a 12 year old protagonist.
>>
>>85068168

>>

You know, if you did a movie and wanted it to be slightly more heroic, all you'd have to do was imply at the end that the whole point of the plan was to pay for a healing.

Artemis is easy to sympathize with anyone for the simple reason that he's punching up instead of down.

There's a difference between "punching above your weight" and "punching up". Artemis is a child born into massive wealth who could be using his plothax intellect to cure cancer but is instead using it to fuck with LEOs putting their lives on the line for the sake of others.
>>
>>85070520
Yes, thanks Familia
>>
>>85060296
Well, she's Irish for a start, and Colfer loves Ireland.
>>
>>85070523
Even the second film would go a long way towards humanizing him, which was always the point of the first 3 novels.

The rub lies in getting audiences to come back for that redemption arc. The 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' merged a bunch of the books together, but that probably wouldn't work in this case...

The only solution I can really think of is throwing in a ton of original content. Sell him as a young Snape with hidden depths. Maybe even format it as something of a Haven 'documentary', with the film itself being a fancy super-CGI reenactment. That would open the door for all kinds of fun shit.

>>85070561
There's a ton more here, too.

That's the mistake most writers make i think. A character can change but too drastic a change ruins the initial appeal. Now imagining an Artemis that stays 'villain' and uses his vast empire to begin plotting to bring the fairy world to light and manipulating governments for that shit. Go big or go home.
>>
>>85071384
>Now imagining an Artemis that stays 'villain' and uses his vast empire to begin plotting to bring the fairy world to light and manipulating governments for that shit.

Why would he want to do that?
>>
>>85071384
Problem is, you dancing a fine line and on the other side you have an unlikable hero.
>>
>>85071817
Be honest, were the Eco-terrorists storyline any better?

>>85071849
It just takes finesse to not be an asshole. I believe Sherlock Holmes made being an asshole popular.
>>
>>85071384
Good storytelling doesn't involve constant escalation. It's better to write based on motivations than on whether a character is a hero or villain.

Artemis is a character who likes taking challenges and making people admit he's smarter than them, even when those challenges are to amoral ends and involve putting his friends in danger. Books 1 and 3 feel really natural because of this.
>>
>>85072021
>Be honest, were the Eco-terrorists storyline any better?

At least they were more consistent with Artemis having standards thing, stuff that was established in the first book. Like the not selling his camouflage patents to military companies thing. He doesn't have a desire to aid in wars and stuff.
>>

i'm really sorry this took so long, did not realize how much trouble i would have getting the tablet to work with my drawing programs. it is so much easier to draw but the programs are not designed with consumer grade tablets in mind, the schizophrenic palm rejection was infuriating. here is a small holly/artemis in consolation as i keep tweaking my settings.
>>
>>85074152
That's pretty cute, Anon.
>>
>>85074289
Thanks, I was getting super frustrated so I decided I'd go with some cute shipping stuff that people asked for.

If you're curios I'm using a Surface Pro 3 and tried to use Artrage (which I love for sketching), Sai and Sketchbook Pro. Artrage kept crashing and Sai plain does not work with the tablet (it keeps randomly selecting tools and functions I don't want), which sucks because I get the best brush strokes from it. Sketchbook has the best UI but unfortunately doesn't support variable line-width or brush density with pen pressure (seriously why the fuck not?). I finished it with Sketchbook because the program is ridiculously stable, if very limited.
>>

Thanks, it might just be easier to draw with gloves and try to set up a dual monitor scenario. My main issue thus far is that Sai (of which I like best for sketching after Artrage) is ridiculously sensitive. If I waggle the pen too much it thinks I'm clicking on other things so suddenly it's opening up menus and submenus and shit.

Would be neat to get a couple other drawbros in here. Maybe I'll do more tomorrow, if in pencil.

Do you know what I would like to see? An Artemis Cartoon Show. A high budget show which had a similar style to the comics.

I mean, as much as I enjoy the old books, I think that ultimately, the character of Artemis was helped greatly by his internal struggles. Something that the comics could ultimately not do.

Hell, it would give a chance to reintroduce the characters in a way which is true to the original but at the same time, not completely stale. I actually think in some cases, it might help characters like Opal gain more depth while at the same time, retaining the original idea behind her. You could have her interacting with her companions, hell, the rivalry that she had with Artemis could become even better than it originally was. Because ultimately animation is a visual medium and because of that, you could have scenes which show how similar they were to those clever enough to pick up on it.

Seriously, a show like this could be great. Get someone like Greg Weissman in charge of directing and hiring the writers of the show (Hopefully managing to get someone like Neil Gaiman), ensure that it can continue beyond two seasons, get Colfer as consultant writer and I think you'd be set.
>>
>>85077930
It shouldn't be called shipping if the books themselves are setting the two up.

Also, even though fairies watch our TV and movies, they're still incredibly long-lived and mature (mentally and sexually) at earlier ages than us. It's partly why it was so easy for Julius, Holly and Foaly to treat Arty as the criminal adult he wanted to act like. Foaly actually had to underscore just how unique he was to Root during the first book.
>Foaly: "He's twelve, sir. That's YOUNG, even for a mud man."

>>Foaly: "He's twelve, sir. That's YOUNG, even for a mud man."

>>
>>85080449
I think the best angle would be a series that starts off as a preque and then segues into the first book halfway through

It would be nice seeing Artemis in his true, unfettered, dickass, underaged genius role when he's amassing his resources and recouping his father's losses, and seeing more of the underground world would be nice.
>>
>>85063098
this is why AF is unfilmable essentially

its an adult story told through the lens of YA Fiction
>>
>>85086375
Is it really that adult when it's a story about a bad guy who becomes a better person through the power of friendship?
>>
>>85086603
More like through the power of elf booty.
>>
>>85086653
They were friends before he noticed the booty, to be fair.
>>
>>85086375
No, it's still a children's story about a 12yo making friends. A novel just allows more freedom than a live-action movie. In terms of author liberty, prose > comics > cartoons > live action. Each level must be safer because it has a larger production staff, larger audience, and anything depicted becomes more graphic.

It's true for normal adaptations as well. American Psycho cut a number of the more graphic scenes from the book.
>>
>>85086653
It's probably worth noting that his growth into being less of an asshole took a sharp rise when he hit puberty.

Because Holly is in the elven equivalent of her early 20s, while artemis around the time in the series where the shipping picks up, is around 13-16. Which is not as bad as one would initially think, except that while for a human the difference between 16 and 20 is big, for an elf because of their lifespan there really isn't much. Henceforth the only thing actually stopping Holly from jumping on Artemis bones is not his age, but her self control and the fact that he is human, which kinda flies out of the window at the end.
>>
>>85103529
What? Holly is definitely supposed to be a young adult, however it does better explain why she can respect Artemis on a less childish level since fairies are already adult by the age of 12.
>>
>>85100239
>Eragon
The first book is one of my most beloved pieces of media ever. Yes, it wasn't anything crazy, yes, it was basically a mashing together rip-off of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but looking back I think it was a near perfect execution of 'The Hero's Journey'. The relationship between the boy and the dragon was perfect too.

Then the second book hit. I think it was one of the first things I realized as being 'shit'. I could ramble on about everything that went wrong, but this is an Artemis Fowl thread.
