So the Fantastic Four have been bunking with the Avengers?
>>
>>85035494
Jean's outfit here looks kinda Goblin Queenish.
>>
>>85035534
This is a very unorthodox way to advertise a spin-off. Was there a behind-the-scene reason for this?
>>
>>85034581
They gave the story to Silver Age fanboys who never warmed to the Claremont X-Men: Roger Stern and (yes, really) John Byrne.

Bringing back Jean, and the launch of X-Factor, was basically a Silver Age Fanboy revolt against the rebooted X-Men.
>>
>>85036668
Claremont didn't approve of this so there was no way he was gonna waste a couple of issues on promoting X-Factor.
>>
>>85036786
Did they not notice how successful Claremont X-Men was?
>>
>>85037184
Sure. But Bobby, Warren, and Hank were languishing in avengers and spin offs, and Scott had been written out of the series. Their character assets were underused. The feeling was: if one x-men good sells well, why not have TWO x-men books.

>>
>>85036668
>Was there a behind-the-scene reason for this?

The death of Jean Grey was not popular among several Marvel staffers who loved the Silver Age stuff. An intern named Kurt Busiek shared his idea for a retcon where Jean Grey wasn't responsible for the destruction of the Dark Phoenix Saga with editor Roger Stern. Stern liked the idea enough that he shared it with writer/artist Bob Layton and John Byrne. The trio took it to Jim Shooter who approved the idea.

Chris Claremont had not planned on this and was so mad he would've quit had his editor waited until dinner on Friday, after business hours, so he could calm down over the weekend

This is what happens when the inmates run the asylum
>>
>>85038659

She wasn't intended to die in the first goddamn place.
>>
>>85038883
Claremont and Byrne's original ending was awful and Shooter was right for telling them so. She was just going to lose her powers and leave the book
>>
>>85039176
There was also some talk of making her into a 12 year old. (guess who came up with that idea)
>>
>>85037184
Yes, but when you're a fan you don't care what sells, you just want to see your favorite characters.

So Busiek wrote an angry letter to X-Men after the Dark Phoenix Saga talking about how shit the book had gotten. He loved the Silver Age X-Men so he just didn't want to see them trashed.

X-Factor was created by guys who loved the Original 5 X-Men and never fully loved the Claremont version. It's ridiculous from a sales and artistic standpoint, but they were thinking as fans, not artists.
>>
>>85039176
Shooter was absolutely right to insist on the new ending.

Where I think he went wrong was insisting that Jean couldn't come back unless she was proved "innocent" of killing the broccoli people. Otherwise they could have found a less convoluted way to bring her back, like saying Maddie was the reincarnation of Jean all along.

Kind of sums up Shooter's career, he fixed what needed to be fixed at Marvel and then got to the point that he was laying down kind of arbitrary rules.
>>
>>85039176

Shooter wanted her dead not cos the original ending was "awful" (hint: It wasn't) it was cos he has a big throbbing hate-on for women with power, and he's shown it again and again over the years; Jean isn't the only one he's fucked-over.

He may have said it was that she had to pay for slaughtering all those fucking broccoli people (like anyone cared), yet it's totes cool for Galactus to go around butchering trillions.

There was also some horseshit about the editor not clearing shit with him, but that's probably nonsense, or indicative of excess micro-management.
>>
>>85039247

Pretty sure that was *mentally* twelve, and she would have come out of it eventually.
>>
>>85039624
>Shooter was absolutely right to insist on the new ending.

Nope, not at all. He ruined the story.
>>
>>85039713
Get the fuck out of here with this shit. Galactus is not a hero so it doesn't matter how many innocents he has on his tally.

>Shooter wanted her dead not cos the original ending was "awful" (hint: It wasn't)

The printed version is so superior that the original is awful. It is far more natural for the story to end with heroic sacrifice.
>>
>>85039776
Respectfully disagree. After the broccoli people were killed, something else was needed.
>>
>>85039827
>It is far more natural for the story to end with heroic sacrifice.

So she has her powers sacrificed due to a "psychic lobotomy". How the fuck could cheapjack ancient disused unserviced for millennia Kree weaponry actually harm the Phoenix, let alone kill, when hyper-advanced tech like the Shi'ar had couldn't? I prefer, if forced to accept the Shooterized story, that Phoenix faked its death and then fucked off to the bottom of the bay until the coast was clear.

Jesus,Jean wasn't even responsible, mentally or morally for what she did after Mastermind brainfucked her. Literally unable to tell right from wrong, especially after being bonded to a wild amoral Abstract
>>
>>85039873

The only use for broccoli is for it to be steamed and served with cheese sauce.
>>
>>85039776
>He ruined the story.

It's a story about love and sacrifice. Her death is what people remember because it's the ultimate payoff for the incredible build up

Scott's narration explicitly mentions that she spent the entire fight weakening herself to the point where it could kill her. You're complaining that Superman can't be killed by a gun despite the story stating that Superman reduced himself to a mere human beforehand.

I'm not entirely sure why, but this reminds me of certain creators today, namely Geoff Johns when he brought back Hal as Green Lantern (super strong execution of the transition from Kyle to Hal) and Barry "Boring" Allen as Flash (stupid sluggish execution of the transition from Wally to Barry).

I dig Busiek and I respect other peoples' opinions, but from an artistic standpoint, bringing back the original 5 was counter to Claremont's vision.
>>
>>85043786
Claremont's vision, sure...but the art teams and silver age writers were in favor of x-factor.
