And after five years, it's still the best looking CGI animated film.

Don't know if it's the best, but I'd wager it's dated much less than other CGI films at the time.

It surprises me how quickly CGI seems to age. I saw webm related the other day and it just immediately looked off, though when it released not that long ago I thought it looked pretty damn good.

But yeah, Rango's great, expected it to be a bit shit but it's something pretty fresh and unique. Rattlesnake Jake was top tier.

Depp was actually quite good in Rango. There's a behind-the-scenes thing that showed how they got the reference for the animation: The entire cast actually physically acted out the entire movie in character. I don't any other CGI movie has done that, and it added a lot to the movie by making every character sort of have the physical performance to match their voice acting.

>That's a little more than just being an asshole, dude

I'm saying that lots of guys in westerns are sadistic assholes who kill loads of people for fun and profit.

And we cheer for them because they're charismatic and in the end, the end up going after another bad guy.

And there are guys who are really just trying to uphold the law or not get killed, and we boo them.

And everyone smokes, gets drunk off their asses, fucks whores, and gambles- when they aren't being racists.

The morality of the wild west is usually entirely dependent on who the protagonist is.

They aren't perfect, but I think you problem is you don't understand they try to make a cartoon, but using just plain colors doesn't make the same way with traditional animation, they have to try to mix unreal things with real one, a good example is Zootopia, most of the animals have wonderful fur based on real life fur and physics, but of course, Judy (the bunny) have a unreal head, body and proportions for a real bunny. Of course, they have a lot work to do.

Frozen is a poor example, it always looked like shit due to how badly the movie was rushed. Check out the wall beneath Anna, it's really obvious that it's a flat texture over a simple shape, they didn't bother to actually carve out grooves between the stones. Same thing with the castle in the background, it looks like something from a video game. There's also corner walls that have misaligned textures and other shit like that if you look for it.

The only reason it seemed good looking on your first watch is because the majority of the film is just plain, white, easy to render, boring ass snow. It's really hard to fuck that up.

How were the textures so fucking good?

I remember being bowled over by how good it looked in the theaters, and even now I don't think I've seen any other CGI movie handle textures so well.
>>
>>85035717
Every single CGI movie, besides Rango, has followed Pixar's lead. Pixar, being early in the CGI scene when the technology was still primitive, made people's faces practically textureless, and instead put all the detail and gloss and shit into their eyes, because that's what people look at. They've stuck with that style because it's become "theirs", making all their humans look like untextured lumps of clay. Which is their prerogative. The problem is that everybody else has mimicked them because Hollywood absolutely fucking despises the idea of trying something new.

It would be relatively simple for every CGI movie to look as detailed as Rango; I mean, the majority of CGI work outside of animated movies looks like that already, with a focus on detail and realism. It's just that nobody wants to do it because nobody wants to mess with the formula. So they keep doing these untextured flesh coloured lumps and in turn people think that's all CGI is capable of.

Anon, I don't know if you know what human skin looks like. Here's another CGI model for comparison, one that wasn't used in a Pixar knockoff children's film.

It's not just the texture work though, it's the general ethos and theme of keeping everything undetailed, clear and simple. Sure, there's a few freckles and a wrinkle or two, it's not literally untextured. But that's it. For the most part it's bright and saturated and mostly flawless, which makes it look like a clay model or a toy or something. And again, it's perfectly fine if Pixar wants to do it that way, the problem is when nearly every single film in the industry does the same thing. That's why people dislike CGI so much.

>or giving a fucking country to some neet girl with ice powers that come with a free panic attack free of charge.
The funny thing about frozen is that Hans did a much better job of leading the country. He might have been a Machiavellian shitbag, but he made sure to look after his people. The very first thing he did while in power was gave away goods from the castle to the townsfolk to make sure they were kept warm and alive. By contrast Elsa's first act as queen was permanently cutting off their primary trading partner just because she didn't like their representative, which will fuck over many, many of the city's citizens and will likely plunge the whole city into poverty and strife.

But that's okay because Hans was a big mean poopiehead and Elsa has True Love, right?
>>
>>85037479

The argument against snakes with breasts ignores the many other ways in which these snake aliens extinct uniquely human proportions and traits as well as many decidedly non-reptilian traits.

Why are all the other clearly human traits okay, but lumps of fat on the chest not? Aside from elephants and primates, no animals- even other mammals- have breasts and only humans have fatty ones outside of lactation.

It's nitpicking that misses the forest for the trees.
>>
>>85038096
What you're mad at isn't Pixar's fault. The trend you're talking about is just how people adapt the kind of designs animated films have always featured since before 3D rose to prominence.

The fact that there's no gritty realistic CG films featuring dirty porous women is a broader problem with how people perceive animation, it's not because Pixar's texture design choices.

Feminist themes or something like that. It appealed a lot to women, and women are a huge purchasing demographic, they throw around money like woah. Plus, it had enough appeal to draw guys in too, which is great because they want every possible market paying for their films. That's the dynamic Disney tries to reach for all their movies, women first at the ticket counter and men right behind, and Frozen just hit that goldmine hard.

By all accounts Disney themselves were as shocked by it as everyone else, they sort of assumed it would be like The Good Dinosaur, a poor investment that they unceremoniously popped out to make their money back. They weren't prepared for a breakout hit.

I mean, you don't make one and a quarter billion off women alone. There's got to be something there. That fat fuck Dobson bragged about buying multiple tickets and seeing the movie over and over again in the theaters, so it had to have some appeal to some men. They got a ticket out of me from the promise of snowy landscapes and great visuals, which turned out to be a bit of a bust but they got my cash anyway so the joke's on me.

Ol' Dobby REALLY isn't the best measuring stick for that kind of thing, since he's a whimpering buffoon who jumps on female friendly trends for brownie points.

>That's the dynamic Disney tries to reach for all their movies, women first at the ticket counter and men right behind, and Frozen just hit that goldmine hard.

Kind of.

Disney used to be synonymous with animated films for the whole family, or at the very least, the kids. But after some less than successful films in the late 90's and early 2000's, they dropped out of cinematic animation.

They came to rely almost entirely on their direct to video sequels, the best selling od which were the ones featuring various Disney princesses. So Disney pushed the Disney Princess brand HARD. That and runaway live action hits like Hannah Montana, That's So Raven, and Lizzie Mcguire and boy bands like the Jonas Brothers saw them skyrocket in popularity among girls.

Disney soon became a brand highly associated with girls while Pixar and Dreamworks picked up the family animation mantle.

Disney tried a couple times to enter back into animation with Chicken Little, Bolt, and Meet the Robinsons, with middling success. Their attempt to revive 2d with the Princess and the Frog flopped because it was mainly girls who wanted to see it.

Then Tangled happened. Envisioned from the get-go to capture male audiences by being less saccharine, featuring more comedy, and having a more engaging male protagonist, it turned out to be a hit with larger demographic appeal.

Frozen followed in its wake and used many of the same elements and just kind of built its own self sustaining hype.

Acquiring Marvel and Star Wars only further helped Disney recapture that male demographic it had lost.

Now people are eager to see Disney films again and when you mention the name Disney, "girly Princesses" is no longer the first thing that pops into everyone's head. Yeah, there are girls in major/starring roles, but people see past that.

that villains should be scary. Honestly don't get why some people are trying to remove every fucking edge from children's entertainment.

kids need monsters to be afraid of, it builds chararacter. That moment when you get older, look back on a monster that scared you and say 'it wasn't that bad!' Is kind of fucking important for development.
>>
>>85039235
The Incredibles still looks more-or-less fine and everything after looks pretty good. And the earlier movies are dated but still not terrible by any stretch. They really do have artistry and stylization of the form that makes the look of their movies timeless in a way, even though it's easy to see the technology advancements with each movie.
I think Ratatouille and Wall-E were actually probably the height of eye candy in their movies, humans are still pretty cartoony though but I bet they'd look worse if they weren't.

I don't see this look working for lighter cartoon comedy though.
Rango, yes, because it was going for the dirty western mood. It looked marvellous in it.

But as a counter example: The sly Raccoon movie trailers. They just looked horrible and the higher detail look they went for, instead of the cartoon skin look of the games, absolutely demolished the cartoon comedy mood that should've been there.

Making everything high detail is not what cgi animation should do. It just does not fit everywhere.

It's just like it is with 2D animation: it's a stylistic choice that depends on the situation.
There are the animation golden age cartoons that worked with comedy, light mood and cartoon skin and then there are the movies like plague dogs and watership down that need the more realistic look and mood.

>Says who? Boys are into girly shit as well

Says the massive spike in male viewership since they changed their marketing to focus less on girls and more on broader demographic appeal.

For instance, Tangled was originally named "Rapunzel" and Flynn has a much smaller role in it, but they changed the name and gave him a larger part in the film and in advertising to play up the comedic elements and his role in the story.

That type of story usually has a character established for the protagonist before he takes on his fake identity. Then when he goes back to his old identity, we've seen those character traits and how he uses them to accomplish his goal.

In Rango, he has no original identity, so when he's ousted as a fake, he finds out that "who he really is" is nobody at all. So he decides to embrace his fake identity fully and make it real. That's why he's a chameleon.

No woman has a waist as proportionally tiny or hips as proportionally large as most cartoon characters. No human has a head as proportionally large as most cartoon characters.

It's almost like cartoons are exaggerated or something.

This. It's not even about when you get older, but that in the moment, by the end of the movie itself, somehow this terrifying villain goes down and everything is okay again. It's important to safely nurture kids through fear like that and let them know there's comfort on the other side.

Laika's holding up pretty well in that area though, I reckon. Probably not as scary as some older movies (maybe the Coraline stacks up), but it's hard to say as an adult.
TV too. Flapjack was freaky as all hell, Adventure Time definitely has its moments etc.

I saw that one video explaining the snow works in Frozen. Pretty baller it was all program than animating it. ie. when a body moves through snow, each bit of snow independently pushes away.

Just my two cents that they wasted their work hours developing the snow, plus its added rendering time because of the tech. Or because they can't decide on the movie's time style and influence.

Well, I was referring to the non-dialogue characters, but the side characters are spot on especially the stoner guy.
I think it is still called hair in technical terms. I'm not in the computer field, but from what I know in vidya games they use the same tech on hairs for furs on animals.

And I mind for suddenly spurring out swears in a good discussion. Nothing else to emphasize it.
