My guess based on the previews is that Amethyst challenges Steven cause she thinks the training is pointless or she gets upset over trying it herself and feeling it's useless.
Then the sparring match ends up getting heated and becoming a big ass fight, with Steven actually holding his own against Amethyst.
Not sure if he beats her or if she almost goes too far and Pearl steps in to stop her before she really hurts Steven.
Either way, it ends with Amethyst asking Pearl if she could train her more, wanting to get better like Steven clearly has and be able to beat Jasper next time she shows up.

It was just not very good. I hate plots where they make a point to stop competing with a jerk only to have the jerk throw a tantrum at the end of the episode, giving them the victory. Rather then making it feel like they don't care, it just makes it feel more like they took a smug high road just for the sake of making him mad.

Also as it's often pointed out, Steven's behavior in that episode was really odd. He's shown a lot less hate towards people who have done much worse than Kevin. Hell, even while trying to capture Peridot he never really seemed to show any actual animosity towards her.

Let's look at this as a metaphor. Lapis went to compete in the high jump. She completely cocked it up and wrecked her back. She's currently in rehab, but she's afraid to jump again because she doesn't trust herself not to cock it up again. Jumping over a puddle won't prove she can go back to the high jump.

If SU follows the standard character arc, until she succeeds at doing what she failed to do before, she won't ever be truly sure of herself. Lapis needs to fuse with Jasper to prove she won't let her emotions get the better of her and ruin her other fusions if she's emotionally pressed.

She has to become Malachite and let Malachite take the reins instead of suppressing her and Jasper.

I attended a presentation by Jeff Liu, Colin Howard, and Tom Law (storyboard artist on WBB) today. It was pretty fun and very informative.

>"Kiki's Pizza Delivery" had a quick joke cut out. After Steven says "Poor Kiki," in the storyboard there's a beat and he says "See ya!" cheerfully. Colin joked about that being cut.

The animators misunderstood and when the Dexter's Laboratory crew got the episode back, the audience literally took off into the sky.
