Early reactions on twitter are mixed to positive. Cast and action scenes being praised, pacing and tone being criticized, Jared Leto's performance seems to have people split right at the middle.

Overall, it's shaping up to be as divisive as Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. Tracking for the opening day also dropped from $125 million to $115 million. Still record-breaking in theory.

What are your thoughts, /co/?

The Leto thing is to be expected because plebs think Heath's Joker is how Joker is suppose to act even though it was nothing like comics Joker.

My prediction:

RT: 50% - 70%
BO: US$ 700mi - US$ 800mi

Pros:
Waller, Harley, Slipknot, better than Batman vs Superman

Cons:
Joker, Deadshot, not enough Katana and Boomerang, cheesy writing
>>
Meanwhile, there still remains nothing worth remembering from "The Incredible Hulk".
>>
>>84997619
>Slipknot

>>
>>84997619
I think it will do between the 500-600ml range. I may be underestimating the "Hot Topic" audience, tho. RT...yeah, seems about right.

>Pros
Waller seems pretty nice, Harley it's all about how well she's written or she will come off as grating, Slipknot is obviously the film's secret co-star.

>Cons
I am not sold on Leto's joker. I mean he's not a bad actor, but I'm not feeling his voice at all. Looks like he's trying too hard: I fear Lex v2. Hope the movie proves otherwise, though.
Deadshot...will smith plays will smith. Neutral on that, he's tolerable. Katana and boomerang? The writing? No opinion. Even assuming the leaks are true, I can't judge off that.

It's basically a prolonged "anarchist" Tom Waits impression. I can't see anything else really.

I accept this is a Nolan/ grittier Batman franchise in general but overall there's a lack of enjoyment in himself or narcissism I think is present in most interpretations of the Joker that this misses. And forget everything else that isn't "muh Joker" but I think that is an important component to his personality that this missed entirely.

And overall I Heath Ledger has been an actor that occasionally chose pretty good roles instead of being a pretty good actor. Kind of like Keanu Reeves. I think a few movies he's in are unquestionably good, I like them, the Dark Knight was enjoyable, it's not really because of him though. Chances are that role could have been filled by anyone and been just as good if not a bit better.

Are you kidding? He made that movie. Baleman and the other characters like the rushed development of Two-Face were only interesting because of him.
>>
>>85003378
Hmm I suppose the lack of narcissism is a fair point. Joker usually is kinda full of himself.

I think Ledger Joker was heavily inspired by the killing joke argument, I mean they did the whole "Deep down everyone is just like me and I'll prove it" thing. Also visually he obviously looks allot like Azzerellos Joker.

I thought it was interesting that Hamill said he felt like TDK took the BTAS Batman/Joker relationship and flipped it around. He did enjoy it though.
>>
>>85003378
I disagree. I agree with the fact that I don't think he is a good Joker, but his acting in TDK is amazing knowing what Heath Ledger is like in his other roles, I only realized this when I rewatched a clip from TDK and noticed that you couldn't tell it was Heath Ledger but a character with a life of his own.
>>
>>85003645
The only scene I really liked was the nurse scene. And even that like I said before I think almost anyone could have done it. Mostly script, direction, and finding the best possible takes rather than anything he brought to the table.
>>85003724
>I only realized this when I rewatched a clip from TDK and noticed that you couldn't tell it was Heath Ledger but a character with a life of his own.

>a character with a life of his own.

Like I said and provided reference for not even remotely. It's psychotic Tom Waits.
He, in my opinion, brought almost nothing original to that role. And if he hadn't died before the movies release people would have called him out on his bullshit. But instead he gets a posthumous Academy Award. I can't think of the name of the movie but it was his last one and because he died Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp replaced him in a few scenes. The difference in quality of the performance is glaring.

I'm not saying you guys are wrong and I'm right. or your opinions are shit. I just don't think he brought much if anything to the role or any role he's had. He's competent enough to have been put in movies. He's never impressed me.

That's only because DC retreated back to pandering towards the ever dwindling core base of Comic Book readers (which who can blame them) while Marvel is still trying in vain to court new readers in a ham-fisted manner.

Floppies are a dying format and only by retreating to your corner and awaiting your slow inevitable death will guarantee decent sales, even then Rebirth may be much like the Nu52, big buzz at the start then things die off back to pre-reboot numbers. It's DC's version of Marvel's Events.

>>
2 words guys: Will Smith. It's dead on arrival.
>>
>>85010568
It really doesn't mean anything when you're a dying format. Don't mean to sound like "sour grapes", but it's a fact. DC just keeps hitting the reset button while Marvel tries to court new readers and maintain an ongoing continuity (with very mixed results). One is trying to save the industry (Marvel - as assbackwardsly as possible) and one is resigned letting it die (DC - because honestly there's really no saving it).

I respect Marvel for fighting to save the medium, but I understand why DC is doing what they're doing. All in all though, I want something I'll be able to read years from now and I might get a few bits from Marvel now and then while even the greatest stuff DC is putting out now has already been done better by DC at least once before (wish Marvel had learned that lesson with Civil War 2 not that I'd honestly recommend reading either).

Pretending either of the Big 2 is doing anything right is somewhat of a joke since they're both failing in their own way and anything they're doing right won't matter in any long term or significant manner.

Except if you've actually been since before the New-52 you'd know that there wasn't really any buzz from actual DC readers. Why would we have been happy about losing all that history and getting it replaced by edgy versions?

Rebirth is literally an un/anti-reboot since it's folds both pre and post Flashpoint into a single continuity while at the same time bringing back the aspects of characters that people loved.

Fans are loving Rebirth. Critics are loving Rebirth. LCS are loving Rebirth. and it's bringing in new readers.

It's clear you're trying to paint this as something grander than what it is. Everytime something new comes along for DC you always trump it up as "it'll be different this time" and that every instance in the past obviously proves this or corroborates this. I just get so tired of watching you guys try and hype up one new DC gimmick after another.

Hey, I'll admit Marvel's current comic book direction is dissapointing, but I at least respect them trying to court new readers even if it means their stuff is suffering. Either way, no matter what DC does, you'll try and find some excuse to be an apologist for it and whatever Marvel does, you'll find some reason to shit on it. Simple as that.

Yeah. This is the category that always going to yield skepticism from me whenever someone praised this film. Throw a few jokes in and casuals will rave, even if the quality of the humor is garbage, so if a certain type of person praises it, it could be a very bad thing. Are they saying that it's too funny or not funny enough?

Definitely want it to be the later. Every joke I've seen from the film has been intensely cringey and make it seem like Ayer was trying to be something he's not. I can ignore them, though, as long as they're in short supply. All I want is an espionage or political thriller movie but with supervillains.

The way RT works is that you get a positive or negative score based on a numerical rating (I think a positive is over 70?)

So if one person thinks a movie is a 100% and another thinks it's a 69, then that movie has a 50%. If two people think a movie is a 70%, that movie has a 100% and is Certified Fresh. So more people thought Ghostbusters was mediocre than thought BvS was good.

What's more suspect is that Ghostbusters 2016 is Certified Fresh with a 73%, despite a Certified Fresh score being over 76%.

The HT audience is 30-somethings now who download everything and pay for bootleg merch from shitty fan art t-shirt sites while living at home.

I see $500 million to maybe $600 million being about right for this. Frontloaded, staves off dying because what the fuck else is coming out in August after it? Pete's Dragon isn't going to do it.. or Kubo.. or Ben Hur or Mechanic 2.

Guardians was a phenomenon connecting with the audience to keep it going. TMNT knocked it down its opening week after 2 weeks of #1 and GotG rose to fight back to first place and keep going well through September.

This is more ASM where there was no real competition for weeks when GI Joe Retaliation delayed 9 months and so we got another shitty ASM movie out of that franchise.

DC has far more diversity than Marvel in pretty much every medium, they just don't pat themselves on the back for it and bang the drums every time they bring one out. Tumblr and their ilk are huge faggots who will gobble up whatever is marketed to them (see: their love for Hunger Games when it was in fashion, HP, the MCU, etc), so they're Marvel diehards thanks to good old fashioned Disney marketing and brand power, cognitive dissonance be damned.

Suicide Squad seems like a terrible movie to follow up MoS and BvS with.
Shouldn't they have waited until after Wonder Woman and Flash or something to do it?
If not just have it take place after the Batman movie, though I am guessing they want to take the reverse route and have Suicide Squad lead into Batman instead.

No matter though, MoS and BvS were incredibly bleak and grim movies. And they've just shat out one after the other without anything in between at this point.

Now I am not saying everything has got to be like Marvel. But for all their similarities, Marvel's movies have still been handled quite differently from each other.
You've got visually colourful movies with lots of fantasy/sci-fi and adventure in Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor's movies.
Then you've got Captain America's that are admittedly a lot more visually bleak than the other movies, yet they are about striving for hope in a world that doesn't have much of it. Staying thematically uplifting in the drama thrillers that are his movies.
Then you have movies like Ant-Man that was essentially a heist movie through and through.

They're both visually and thematically different from each other. But DC's movies have all been both visually and thematically bleak and drab.
You can have bleak and drab movies, you really can. But you grow incredibly tired of it when that's all you're getting. I can't even be assed to care about Suicide Squad anymore after MoS and BvS, even though I would have most likely seen it had the movies been released in a different order.
>>
>>85034524
Only GOTG looks "visually different" from the others. Everything else is purely house style

You get food (I usually stick to finger food) and drinks. Even a 24oz glass mug you can take home as long as there are no liquids when you leave. Food and drink prices are what you would expect at a fast casual restaurant.

The waiters usually get your order before previews, and as trailers are playing, you get your food. You can push a button to call them at any time and they usually wait til a quiet moment in the movie to give you the check. Just an all-around great time to have.

He's a loner because he exposes himself and then has to move and create a new life. He keeps on trying to settle down but 'Superman shines through' so to speak and so he has to move. This is the impetus for creating the dual identity.

Pretty much every blockbuster since China became a huge market has had pacing trouble because they have to load action sequences with tedious minute after minute of CGI garbage.

Critics all have their own metrics of approval or disapproval: If critic A uses a scale of 1-4 and critic B uses a scale of 1-5, a "3" means significantly different things.
Hence: RT only uses a system of 100 or 0 if critic A gives 3 stars and recommends seeing it, it is a 100, if critic B gives three stars and says it's not a must-see, RT gives it a 0
Why?
Because it makes of a unique aggregation setup. that's why, and it also taps into the wisdom of crowds. When Half say yes, and half say no, you get a very firm "maybe." sitting pretty at 50%. In the case of BvS: Most said "it's bad, really bad". in the case of Ghostbusters, most said "It's okay." hence, BvS got an awful RT score, and GB got a mediocre one, and Zootopia gets an amazing one.

>Oh? I thought he had some kinda supervision over this... or was that Justice League?
He's head of Justice League, although it appears Affleck and Johns have promoted powers to keep a leash on him.

He is the one who set the direction for the DC movie universe, so he had some say in what should/shouldn't happen in Suicide Squad (e.g. don't kill off Joker as we have batplans for him). But he has no say on editing/pacing or even storytelling, which are his key flaws.

>Well, whatever. I'm sure he and his Wife have been given the American equivalent of the "window seat" jobs for a while at Warner Brothers.
Once Justice League is done they will boot him out the door.

See, I like most DC heroes. I want to see Warner Brothers get their collective shit in order, so they can start producing *genuinely* GOOD movies. Not like 'You just don't understand it" good. I mean like "Fucking worthy of the heroes they include" good.

Because fuck you I understood Batman and Superman just fine when I was 11 years old and there was a goddamn blood-based xenomorph invasion of Gotham, I should be able to "understand" a movie based on these characters just fine. But all I "understand" about the last two films was that you had a director who didn't fucking like his movies protagonists.

>and the narrative that Hollywood wants is that Marvel is the best thing ever

Or that DC sucks right now, which is accurate. This has nothing to do with Marvel.

>I don't think they are trying to do that. They are just shit at understanding what comic books and superheroes are about.
>the company that invented superheroes don't "understand what comic books and superheroes are about"

The former is an entire artistic medium and the later's only requirement is that it feature a vigilante with superhuman abilities or a secret ID. The only reason casuals have this limited perception of what the entire genre should be is due to the fact that their baby's first, The Avengers, happened to be made by Whedon. Unfortuanately, he is to cape flicks, with his quips, as Tolkien was to fantasy, by limiting an otherwise expansive genre, to elves and dwarves, or in Whedon's case, Buffy's humor and tone.

But what about Slipknot? Does he at least get to strangle someone?

It's the movie, along with Iron Man I, that brought the current crop of casuals and teenagers onto the superhero bandwagon.

>Does anybody else want to go to theaters and protest against this movie? I think we've got time to start a movement to scare people off from seeing this piece of shit.
>If this movie makes money it will do more damage to cinema than Michael Bay movies. We can't let every movie become an edgy shitfest and we need to make sure Damage Control never makes another movie.
>I was thinking we could make signs that say things like "MOMS GONNA FREAK" and take pictures of edgy teens going to see it for public internet shaming. If we can make sure people are too embarrassed to go see it we can do a lot of damage.

Marvel fags are objectively bad people
