So Alex went on a little vacation of Oregon while at Calarts. The falls in the photo are Multnomah Falls. Looks promising as far as the flora goes.

Later on in the photo set he goes to a farm. There's farms directly under the triangle in that overlay. It's totally a stretch but I can see it being in the little stretch of trees by that land when you check it on satellite.

I still say we might get somewhere by using a variation of the pigpen cipher.

We have 4 directions that the branches point. The existence of the knot or not, and the existence of the pine bunch or not.

Each tree has up to three branches.

Which would imply... if we held each tree to having only two branches in one direction...


Let me map this out...

Alright, having mapped this out, I think we can rule out branch position as indicating a single letter, at least when taken as the full tree. It's possible that the branch position of half the tree could indicate a letter, but it's not the entire tree. There are 30 possible combinations of 1 - 3 branches when limited to a max of 2 on one side.

I count 7 total possibilities on a up-to-three branch count with it restricted so that each branch can only have two in one direction. Taken with knot and pine bunch as a binary, that'd give us 28 total slots. 26 letters + space + period.

Here's the quick on the branch possibilities (mirror for other side as this is for tree sides and not full tree). I'll type up a translation of the trees into half-tree pine bunch knot coding which I can then represent by letters, spaces, and periods. We can run it through the ciphers to see if it creates anything.

MotGF said it was plainly obvious and I think even commented it'd be a head slapper when revealed.

When Alex tweeted it, and it was used for the first clue, there's this perception, in my opinion, that it leads you to the next bit, and you're done with it.

While there is A LOT going on in the picture.. I don't think it's a bad assumption to make that a lot of it is irrelevant. Just look at all the journal pages and how much fluff was in each one.

That said.. I don't think anyone would think to come back to the first clue, and analyze it deeper, somehow managing to go from the first clue to the final destination. Especially with the difficulty we're already having KNOWING it's leading to the final destination. Plus, things were progressing super fast until the puzzle. The puzzle is probably the first point anyone would have to even think about analyzing other clues, but why would you anyways?

The final clue is the link back to the first clue. The piece that gives you the info to even think about re-examining the first clue.

Therefore...

Alright, here we go. So, this is done by looking at each half side of the tree and creating a symbol based on where the branches point and whether or not it has a knot or a pine bunch. Top strike = knot. Bottom strike = pine bunch. Diagonals = tree branch direction.

I left out the completely blank option from my previous calculations, which means we have 29 possibilities. Perhaps one too many? Perhaps a comma? Who knows.

Part of the problem is figuring out what symbols match with what alphabet. They don't intrinsically match, you know? There's no definite 'order' to the symbols. But perhaps someone could run with it from here.

The far left is my generic pattern that I used. Blue lines are the symbols created.

Here's an easier-to-understand version of that mess. Each box being either a letter or a space.

Limiting the branches to three is sort of bullshit though when considering only the half sides of the trees. We only ever encounter two branches on any side which would make the lack of the third odd. Plus, it'd be easy enough to say 4 branches instead of 3. What this is trying to do really is to say a branch pointing in one direction, if it's the only branch pointing in that direction, can not be distinguished from the two possible positions dedicated to that branch, Which I guess is sort of legitimate. I'll work on an 'alphabet' of this stupid idea next. I don't think it's really leading us anywhere useful though.

Guys Gravity Falls is below Mount Hood on the map thing from episode one, I think I found something though.

Guys, check this out. If you divide the trees in center, the ones on the right are sort of the same as the ones on the left; just in a different order.


More than that, they see to differ in sort of similar ways. Left A is low; Right A is high. Left C is low, Right C is high. Right E is just Left E rotated 180 degrees. The Right D is the one I'm not sure on. Seems to just have the lower branch aim in the opposite direction.

The edges sort of do -- in a broad brush, not a fine detail sense. Interesetingly enough, if it was a perfect fit, we would expect to see the circle round the hand part continued onto the final clue. But it's not.
