I really encourage you to put aside your Anno hateboner and see the film as its own thing. While its debatable that some aspects of Evangelion were inevitable in the making of the film, the real centerpiece of the film is the human drama. Just like how magnetic Cranston was in Legendary Godzilla, you really want to watch the rise and fall of Hasegawa's character.
