This wasn't the absolute worst garbage ever written as /co/ would lead me to expect from this writer.
>>
>>
>>84886904
I hope its better then last time around
>>
>>84886981

it wans't bad and I really liked the last 2 pages.
>>
>>84886997
>>
>>84886970
I liked the origin Batdad part, though Lobdell has always been good at those. The only part I don't like is that Jason is working undercover for Bruce, which means he probably isn't going to be killing people much, and their still set on him being involved in the Bafamily.
>>
>>84887012

>>84886970
I was pleasantly surprised, as well.
And I keep hoping real Black Mask doesn't wear weird gimp.

It's been black since 1986 except when Morrison went off on one, now if your complaining about lack of white streak I'll agree.

yeah. bruce got him to dye it black so criminals wouldn't realize he wasn't the same robin as before, since that would undermine the myth

Reading for Bizarro,
>>
>>84887061
Jason's Robin costume is so much better than Dick's in the New 52. I don't get why they made Dick's look like shit.

Nah, his hair is supposed to be black.

The whole red hair thing was just Morrison being Morrison and hasn't been acknowledged by the other writers.

Pre-crises on infinite earths (1983-86) Jason Todd had a similar origin to Dick and had strawberry blond colour hair, post crises which is the start of the Jason in Outlaws it was always black. Grant Morrison likes everything in continuity and brought it back for a while, also making him the literal red headed stepchild worked for the story he was telling.

Though >>84887242 is right Jason has gone through so many changes of appearance and continuity its pretty much what ever works for you.

Thanks, now if he just remembers to keep the story relatively grounded with no blood powered swords this time, and limits the amount of dialogue cluttering up the page the book will continue to be alright.

Interesting how this and the Nightwing book are basically doing the same thing. Dick/Jason want to enter some secret organization/underground and take them on from the inside, but Bruce is upset at them for doing it. Art in Red Hood is much better though.

>Newsarama: Scott, you certainly know Jason Todd well and have experience writing him. But what's different about your approach to Jason Todd and his title now that "Rebirth" is starting?

>Scott Lobdell: I wouldn't say anything is "different" per se, other than the way that we change as people move in and out of our lives. Whether it is the departure of an ex-girlfriend who has moved on, or the passing of a parent, or just moving across the country and getting a new job: As your situation changes, you are presented with new challenges and new opportunities.

>That's what's been happening with Jason for the last five years (of publishing, not comic book time). He went from a pretty angry loner, estranged from his family, to making some pretty intense friendships with Roy and Kori. We've even seen some of the wrinkles in his relationship with Bruce ironed out during both the original Red Hood and the Outlaws and Red Hood/Arsenal. (And please note I said "some" and not "all" — sometimes I feel Bruce and Jason will always have a "one step forward, two steps to the side" relationship.)

>So while we are streamlining his origin a little in ReBirth — taking what worked pre-"New 52" and some of what worked in "New 52" — I am confident that readers and fans who've been enjoying Jason's adventures over the last five years are going to feel this is all "of a piece," even as new fans are going to feel they are getting in on the ground floor.
>>

>Nrama: This week is the publication of the Rebirth issue, which proceeds August's new Red Hood and the Outlaws #1. How does the Rebirth issue kind of set things up?

>Lobdell: Rebirth is a strong start to a new series... and as you read it you'll start to notice just how much is secretly crammed into Rebirth in terms of building the world. There is almost not a panel that doesn't get used somewhere down the line. (Lots of Easter eggs are going to be bringing readers back to the Rebirth issue again and again over the next few months!)

>That said, the issue focuses 100% on Red Hood and 0% on the Outlaws. I kept trying to put stuff in there, but to be honest, there was just so much to cover with Jason that I was being neglectful of Artemis and Bizarro by trying to cram them in there.

>So instead, we concentrated exclusively on Jason for the Rebirth issue.
>>
>>84889937
>Nrama: So how would you describe the "Outlaws" team at this point? Is this starting before they become a new "trinity" of sorts, or at least before they begin to really catch fire as a team?

>Lobdell: While I think the team is on a simmer for the few issues, by the time they are all together the book will be on a full boil.

>Right now they feel less like a team and more like three very dysfunctional people who find themselves flung together and trying to make the most of their situation.

>Are they aware that Red Hood is not Batman, and Artemis is not Wonder Woman and Bizarro is definitely not Superman? Absolutely. But while these may be defining characteristics from the readers and fans POV, the three leads aren't going to be spending a lot of real estate comparing themselves to their, I don't know, roll models?

>Nrama: So does this team stay a trinity for a while?

>Lobdell: There are no plans to add to this new "Dark Trinity" concept, lest I have to start calling them the 'Dark Quartet' or the 'Dark Eight is Enough.'

>As far as his teaming up with Artemis and Bizarro goes, I can tell you it is a pretty linear story — we bring everyone into the story and give them a little room to breathe before we create even a casual "team."

>>84890032
>Nrama: What's it like when Jason has to work with these two?

>Lobdell: I think he's still a little off-balanced in terms of making new friends. (If you noticed, Jason hasn't been one to collect very many friends over the years. I think he only knows very few people from his days before his role as Robin and not much more since he became the Red Hood.) He is slow to warm.

>But he will! Artemis is someone he is going to respect almost immediately - recall he was trained as a warrior later in life. She's been taught to kick ass from day one.

>Bizarro is a never-ending source of fascination for Jason. The guy is just so... bizarre. For someone as analytical and tactical as Jason, the sheer uniqueness of Bizarro leaves Jason always wondering what Bizarro is going to do or think next.

>And anyone expecting "dumb Bizarro" is going to be disappointed. This is a Bizarro who isn't "stupid" — he is a Bizarro who thinks... bizarre. You will love him!

>Nrama: What can you tell us about the art? You're working again with Dexter Soy?

>Lobdell: I was so thrilled with the opportunity to work with Dexter on Red Hood/Arsenal, I was thrilled when Alex suggested we keep him on board for Red Hood and the Outlaws. And you know what is strange? Dexter just keeps get even more exciting with every page.

>He laughed at me after he turned in the page where Red Hood assaults a speeding limousine. You'll know it when you see it. And I wrote him a note about how happy I was that I could depend on him to draw anything no matter how impossible. He joked around "Wha -- ?! Why is it your goal to have me draw the impossible?!"

>Nrama; Anything else you want to tell fans about Red Hood and the Outlaws?

>Lobdell: Just that I am the luckiest guy in comics. Three fine-tunings in five years and DC keeps letting me work with one of their most complicated characters. What an honor. Thank you, DC, and thank all the Hoodies who keep showing up to follow the epic that is Red Hood and company.

I wouldn't go that far. The dialogue here was pretty awkward, too, especially with some of the try hard "bad boy" lines. And there's also the forced tension between Bruce and Jason, with Jason not bothering to let Batman in on his plan even though he's been working with Batman for some time now and following his rules. And bringing up Jason's jealousy of the other Robins again.

All the narration on the last page was just unneccessary. Jason's motives for infiltration and his moral dilemma is already set up

It's not bad, especially for a Lobdell-written Red Hood issue, but it wasn't really that impressive, either. It just kind of hit back on a few familiar "aw Batdad" family moments, which Lobdell does a decent job with. It's hard to tell whether or not Lobdell will do a better or worse job going forward.
>>
>>84896965

Jason didn't let Bruce on his plan because he had to make it look credible. As soon they were alone he gladly let Bruce know about it.

No forced tension either, in fact this has been the most healthy their relationship has ever been written.

>All the narration on the last page was just unneccessary. Jason's motives for infiltration and his moral dilemma is already set up

Good thing the narration wasn't about that but about Jason evaluating himself and his role within the Batfamily
>>
>>84897087
>Jason didn't let Bruce on his plan because he had to make it look credible. As soon they were alone he gladly let Bruce know about it.
Bruce investigated the major himself

>No forced tension either, in fact this has been the most healthy their relationship has ever been written.

They were on better terms in Lobdell's earlier run. No qualms about Bruce not trusting Jason, either, or Jason whining about Bruce trusting other Robins over him

>Good thing the narration wasn't about that but about Jason evaluating himself and his role within the Batfamily

Which readers can figure out for themselves. No need for a "Who am I?" speech, it just distracts from art

No.
>>
>>84897199
>Bruce investigated the major himself

Yes, after Jason sent him to the hospital

>They were on better terms in Lobdell's earlier run. No qualms about Bruce not trusting Jason, either, or Jason whining about Bruce trusting other Robins over him

Exactly, this is a follow up to that. And it wasn't Jason being jealous of Bruce but calling him out on his hypocrisy .

>Which readers can figure out for themselves. No need for a "Who am I?" speech, it just distracts from art

And yet looking at tumblr is the bit people loved the most.
>>
>>84897483
You're using tumblr as an argument, really? The site where people reblog panels ripped out of context over and over again?
>>
>>84897199

>They were on better terms in Lobdell's earlier run.

That was bullshit and the development was forced and terribly written.

Jason simple became OK with Bruce, Bruce became OK with Jason after he got hurt, that was the whole scarred face and induced coma shit with Jason listening to Bruce and Alfred talk despite being... in coma, and Jason kept on killing people with Bruce having no say in the matter.

I wish for everything that happened previously to this to be ignored. EVERYTHING. Lobdell already went back to the older and MUCH BETTER origin. So here's me hoping against hope.

If i see anything related to the Outcasts/Untitled again...

Oh, I've seen him around. I don't know why he thinks that everything Lobdell writes needs defending. For some godforsaken reason he seems to think that the All Caste was a great idea and that it doesn't make Jason a special snowflake. I say this as someone who actually liked RHaTO and Red Hood/Arsenal

I kind of agree they aren't as bad as people say, but they're just a famous example of a fanboy, think Damianfag who spams on here sometimes, or also on CBR a couple of years ago there was BATGIRRLFOREVER or something, now they were insane.

>>
>>84901193
I think Lobdell uses the Marvel method? He doesn't really seem to plan ahead. That's why despite a solid Rebirth issue, I'm still not convinced that the next three will be dull snoozefests
>>
>>84901240
The interview above does actually imply that he has a plan.

And his editor seems to be better than the previous one so I have hope for this series.
>>
>>84901193
>>84901240
I think he has gone on record previously as saying he doesn't plan that far ahead. It can be a good thing as he immediately drops plot points he doesn't like anymore like the All-cast, and the 4th Outlaw, Crux? But yeah it can lead to very little story movement or resolution. Hopefully he doesn't do that this time around.
>>
>>84901402
Well, a lot of his ideas are nixed by editorial without warning so I can't really blame him for not wanting to plan too far ahead. Crux and Ravager were supposed to replace Kori and Roy before DC You happened for example

>Jason didn't let Bruce on his plan because he had to make it look credible. As soon they were alone he gladly let Bruce know about it.
It makes no sense why Bruce would ever think that Jason would kill the mayor. It's one thing if Bruce thought Jason would kill a high-ranking criminal, but not the mayor. It's just a plot contrivance
>>
>>84887061
Has Two-Face done anything besides a guy who gets beat up in montages or, at best, be featured when villains team up, since Battle for the Cowl? How about before that? One of the most iconic comic book villains out there, and the guy only has one story.
>>
>>84903297
Well Tomasi did a very mediocre story with him and Snyder's All-Star Batman is a two-face story
>>
>>84892879
>Which shit writer is gonna be Rebirthed next?
Vendetti's GL Corps is actually pretty decent, I'd even go so far as to even cal, it "compelling"
>>
>>84890032
Eventualy i want this book to be straight up edgy justice league just add guy gaurdner, ocean master and m'gaan
>>
>>84901240
I'm pretty sure Johns forced all of them to plan ahead this time.

Reading for Artemis.

But I ended up falling in love with Jason FINALLY

I never saw up 'till now what potential he has in his own right.
>>
>>84886963

He's not a red-head. This is triggering me!
>>
>>84905519
I know people didn't like Morrison's take on him that arc but I thought it was a nice look for him (besides the bad skin, that wasn't necessary). Would have been nice to get another ginger Batfamily member in or even just another blonde if they went with the original color.

Oh well.
>>
Here are my hopes for the comic:

IGNORE EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED BEFORE.
NO OUTCAST/UNTITLED. EVER.
For Jason Todd to actually try to find redemption and try his hardest not to kill anyone.
If Jason Todd do kill anyone, for Batman to not forgive just because. STOP WITH THIS BULLSHIT WHERE BATMAN IS OK ALONG IT ISN'T IN GOTHAM.
For Jason and Artemis not to have a prior romantic history and behave as bickering exes.
For Artemis to not have casual sex with Jason or fall for him.
For Jason not to treat Bizarro as a punching-bag and a pet.

If there's need for any romance, i'd rather to see Artemis falling for Bizarro than anything else. At least that would be weird and funny, and not the usual character fan-wank.
>>
>>84902369
Well, most of the good stuff in this issue was in the flashbacks, because Lobdell only had to retread familiar ground. The present day story was actually rather clunky, and didn't make a lot of logical sense (would Bruce really think that Jason would kill the mayor?)
>>
>>84887291

I was honestly expecting this to be garbage with the writer and all, but it wasn't half bad.

Though to be fair it was just Lobdell's take on better writers' stories. But still it wasn't bad.
>>
>>84890055
>This is a Bizarro who isn't "stupid" — he is a Bizarro who thinks... bizarre. You will love him!

Bizarro being written as Caliban confirmed?

Did Lobdell write Caliban or am I getting my 90s edgelords mixed up?
>>
>>84887181
which Joker is this?
>>
>>84903228
>>84905763
See the page again >>84887118

Bruce never implies he thought Jason was trying to kill the mayor until he put a gun to the mayor's face.

And Jason wasn't trying to fool Bruce but the criminal Underworld
>>
>>84906895
Jason has a gun pointed at the mayor>>84887092
and says "you don't have anything I need", which means he's not extorting him. That's a death threat, which is why Bruce attacks him.

>And Jason wasn't trying to fool Bruce but the criminal Underworld

But fooling Bruce would have been part of his ploy, otherwise he would have told him
>>
>>84907916
Yeah, that was my point. Bruce reacts to Jason's actions and Jason doesnt tells him so his ploy works
>>
>>84908676
But that ploy requires Bruce to actually think that Jason would kill the mayor, But Bruce would know better than anyone that Jason only kills criminals. That's kind of the point of his character. It's a contrived plot point to force a conflict
>>
>>84908756
>Jason only kills criminals
Isn't that one of the main requirements to be mayor of Gotham? You at least have to be in the pocket of the mob.
>>
>>84887213
>Jason not into S&M
Disappointing
>>
>>84908756
Again, follow the flow of events. Bruce shows up and demands Jason to stop whatever he's doing. Jason incapacites him and then puts a gun to the mayor, while Bruce pleads him to stop.

THAT is why Jason didnt told Bruce, he needed him to display actual emotion so the gotham underworld would buy his little show.
>>
>>84909230

This is the page that prompts Bruce to react.>>84887092
Notice that Jason is holding a gun to the mayor. His dialogue indicates that he's not looking to rob or extort the mayor. He's there to kill him. Which is why Bruce intervenes.

I realize there aren't narration boxes to explain to you what's happening but you should still be able to keep up
>>
>>84908852
But the book did nothing to establish that
>>
>>84890694
>Batman lands in the Batcave
>gets out cockpit
>Sees tires missing
>"Damnit, he's on another bender"
>>
>>84910200
I dont know what are you arguing here? Bruce is reacting to Jason's actions. Whatever he believes or not is irrelevant
>>
>>84886904
Man that was a great first issue. It's pretty cool every Robin is doing their own thing now.
>>
>not really up on rebirth stuff
>keep seeing the phrase dark trinity
>i presume this is related to justice league dark
>or two more titles i cant seem to find
oh look, im just as retarded as bizarro apparently
>>
>>84910428
>Whatever he believes or not is irrelevant
Bruce would only have intervened if he believed Jason was going to kill the mayor. Otherwise, the logic of the plot doesn't work. Except Bruce should know clearly that Jason only kills criminals.

How are you having trouble following this?

Great first issue

>Green Lanterns by dog fucker is great

H-how did this happen? Was everyone behind the scenes deliberately sabotaging the New-52 to force DC's hand? Monkey paw wish? Please don't fuck this up DC.

Changed for the Lazarus Pit
>>
>>84913938
He did. After climbing out of his coffee Jason was still brain dead and wondered around Gotham with nothing but his fighting reflexes kicking in whenever someone messed with him. Eventually he was found by Talia because "brainless guy in Gotham kicking ass like some sort of ninja" is the kind of thing that gets her dad's attention. She tossed him in the pit, which healed him the rest of the way. Then he was sent off for his Red Hood training.

>>
>>84887291
Its better then the last red hood and the outlaws #1

Wait shit this is the rebirth issue they may still put out something to curse the name forever

Still im hype little odd that the rebirth issue does not have the outlaws themselves but my understanding is that they are more to make it clear what the current canon is then to tell you what the book will be like
>>
>>84915755
They'll probably say he's Diana's brother which is how he survived after all the crowbar and explosives. It's really not that unlikely considering Diana's half sibling all having various abilities and such.
>>
>>84887585
They are both technicly trying to take things down from the inside but red hood went out of his way to infiltrate crime nightwing got extorted into it and is making the best of a bad situation

>>84917754 It's not gonna be Jason Todd are you fucking retarded?

I find it kinda strange that Jason isn't holding his guns in the variant. They don't appear to be in his holsters either.

Thanks, OP. I really liked this and may just add it to my pulls for a few issues. Who's doing the ongoing art? Same guy, or someone else?

Kek. It's the same with Tynionfags and Detective Comics. Always have to tell themselves "w-w-we're the better Batbook!"

The Nightwing book is better.
Nightwing is the more popular character and still gets to play a major part in upcoming events and other parts of the DCU. (Guest spots confirmed in Batman, Detective, BoP, Deathstroke)

Jason gets stuck with Lobdell.
>>
>Jason gets stuck with Lobdell

And thank god for that

>>84921441
Fair enough on the last 2 but if DC go 6 months without the entire Batfamily gathering in the cave to shout at Bruce before a crossover I'll be fucking astonished.

Crossover is already announced, senpai. September, I think.
>>
>>84921796
Eh, there will be another one along shortly.
>September
That's ridiculously fast though, I'm going to go on a limb and say only the characters with bi-weeklies will be in it as none of the other books will really be going by that point.
No other reason they'd miss out on that line wide sales increase.
>>
>>84921862
You're right. Batman, Detective and Nightwing are crossovering only. No Batgirl, Red Hood and Birds of Prey.
>>
>>84921796
>Nightwing the gymnast
>broad shoulders and pro wrestler physique

Did we learn nothing from 90s Spider-Man?

To be fare if he were based on a typical gymnast he'd be about 5ft tall, and have a creepy Russian mentor.

So will they manage to not fuck my waifu? This issue was pretty good and gave me hope, but I can't be too sure.
