Looney Tunes. Looney Tunes is full of completely outdated references and mannerisms drawn from the pop culture of the time of the creators. All of it flies over the casual viewer today and especially children watching it even a couple decades ago.

But that's okay, because they're used in such a way that they still serve a purpose in the story. This isn't like family guy doing cutaways. It's turns small items or pits of the visual design into references to other shows so they can serve the dual purpose of advancing the story or adding some atmosphere and be a nice sight gag for those in the know. The Pizzas on the horizon and the shoreline are primarily serve to look like weird shit for a weird dream. The sword fight is meant to be a sword fight. The kindergarden is meant to be unsettling. All of them work as part of the show without any need to know what things they're referencing from other shows. That's a bonus.

You think kids are gonna get the subtle nuances of "What's Opera, Doc?" Fuck no, but they'll probably know enough to know what's going on is meant to be a humorous parody of something and it still stands on its own as a work. And when they're older, they might just come across something that'll make them go "hang on, didn't that show I watched as a kid do something like this?"

Fair enough. But the crux of the argument was also that references that fly above the intended audiences' heads are inappropriate. And the they were never done, though it's likely people are just taking issue with anime references given the tone of this thread.

Obviously not all shows do it, I agree with that. But some shows did, and they go unnoticed today because the vast majority of viewers don't know the reference. When it's done right, it doesn't break up the flow of the show. It's just something fun for people who might know and, it should be said, for the creators too. References are meant to be little winks and nods between the creator and some viewers, a recognition of a shared world. They can't support a show on their own, and again should never interfere with the flow of the actual show, but they have a purpose in expanding the enjoyment of a show. Especially when they're a quick shorthand to expand the tone of a scene.

The bombasticness of Opera, and the seriousness of the stories, works well when translated to Looney Tunes because of that age old aspect of comedy: the more serious something is, the funnier it is to make fun of. If you know your Opera, it makes the amusing tone of What's Opera Doc that much funnier. If you know what Amigara Fault is, you'll find the Kindergarden that much more off putting. If you know what the dream pizzas are referencing, the scene seems that much more unnatural. It's just a small part of a show, and it doesn't make it any significantly better, or worse, to have them. Just a part of the overall tone of the thing.

This is old as shot. Wroters always tend to show influence or references to stuff the grew up with. That's why criminals in 50-60's cartoons looked like gangsters from 1920's and most bullies from 80's cartoons had black leather jackets and pompadours like if was the 50's.

The same way we're now having stuff from the 90's and early 2000's. The gap is a bit shorter in part because now creators can get to produce stuff way younger than in the past.
