What is it about fans from that era that makes them see everything as an "us vs. them" scenario? Kylefags hate the other Lanterns and have to explain why he's the most powerful, Timfags hate the other Robins and have to explain why he's the smartest, Cassfags hate the other Batgirls and have to explain why Cass is the best fighter in the world. Why are they so prone to powerlevel spergery? Why can't they accept that other characters have their appeal too?

Because people don't read comics.

If you have to explain to someone that Cass is a great fighter or that Tim is the Robin who must uses his brain, you can assume the person you have ton explain it to has read many of the comics where these characters are featured or at the very least hasn't even read their title books.
