It's the main distinction between Captain Marvel being a distinct entity who's swapping places with Billy, and Captain Marvel being Billy's transformed alter ego. Both are valid interpretations with their own storytelling merits.

Actually it does, or at least it did with Captain Marvel: Post Crisis Captain Marvel was an ADULT version of billy (not a separate personality as it used to be). It was a Mature and wise version of billy, he did got the sense of wonder and kept his innocense, but he was different than Billy (Billy would transform to think about moral problems and find solutions).


Johns "shazam" is an empty cartoon, a character he created for the "movie", his origin story was a movie pitch. The reason he didnt let anyone use the character until Darkseid War was that he didnt want any outside influence, it wasnt until he knew about rebirth he let the character go for a single issue.

If it's called Shazam, is not the real deal and should be ignored.
