Just when I though the show couldn't get darker than the chicken farm one, we had the whale strip club, and then it managed to top it a few episodes later with this.

It's almost as unsettling as it is hilarious.

I think the best part about that, predictable as it was, was that she was only pretending to get an abortion, then finds out she's actually pregnant and wants to keep it
>>
Not a bad season but it felt like a bridge, a set up for another season they already knew they were given the green light on. Lacked the impact of the earlier two seasons, felt like less progress and development happened.

Basically they were just slotting everyone into the places they need to be for another season.
>>
>>84795020
I agree on that, but season 2 had that feeling too for me. Season 1 was the only one that had really good closure (then again they didn't know there were going to be more seasons at the time).
>>
>>84792197
Who is this and is there more of her?
>>
>>84795020
Maybe it felt that way to you because you know how the writers like to slot the characters for the next season.

It's not as progressive and developmental because all the foundation's already been laid out. We know lots about Bojack, Diane, Mr. PB, even Princess Carolyn now.
>>
>>84795216

Yeah but compare the end of 2 to 3.

2 was "we know we've got more coming we're not sure how much so here's a maybe on Bojack's redemption".

3 was "we're definitely not done yet so here's a holding pattern that isn't status quo but doesn't actually go anywhere".

Stuff like the Spider playwright and seeing Penny again kind of felt like playing with loose ends more than tying them up.

>>84795251

There's a lot to season 3, don't get me wrong I liked it. Individual episodes were fine just the season narrative wasn't really doing anything. I get the feeling Bojack's arc has already been plotted out and once they knew they didn't have to end the series yet they slowed it right down while it was still profitable. It's not exactly filler because, like you say, there's a lot of backstory and exposure for the extended main cast.

Eh, she's a shitty person (didn't she say she was similar to Bojack in some ways too? we saw some signs of that in the 2nd season) and Peanutbutter has some jealousy problems whenever Diane spends time with somebody else (especially a guy), maybe has to do with his own insecurity, so they'd be dooming that kid to deal with their occasional discussions or their eventual divorce.

It didn't have the same potential closure for its ending scene like the first two seasons did, but I thought It's Too Much Man was the strongest downward spiral of the series yet.

She doesn't want children. It's pretty obvious. She's not obligated to have one just because she's married.
>>
>>84798801
What's the point of getting married if you're not having children?
>>
>>84798923

Seriously, the earth is dying from all the fucking people. People are stressed and miserable, and to bring someone into the world only guarantees their misery. Reproducing for the sake of biological imperative is ecologically and socially irresponsible, and humans are smarter than that.

Nice projecting. We want children. Being societal leeches isn't a thing we're into. Just wait until your girl's biological clock starts ticking. You'll regret waiting so late to grow up, actually become a man, and start a family.

That's the point. What Sextina was doing was massively fucked up and inappropriate, and she obviously took it seriously. She got a pass because it was "ironic", though. It's a criticism of the trend of using controversy to draw attention to something, countered by the fact that even if it IS disingenuous, it helps someone.

It's similar to >>84796903. Yeah, it's a bunch of cab-driving whores. Yeah, it's pretty offensive, and a massive 180 on its founding values. But it DID save a city, so.....what? Is it really that bad? Is a "bad" thing good, just because it does a few "good" things? That's one of the big questions of the show.

No kid should ever have to live with a social disability that makes it difficult to make friends, share with others, have control issues, constantly get into fights with siblings and just not be a happy child in general.

Besides that, I'm 25 right now, too young for kids, but I just wouldn't be a good dad.

I think it's completely fair: You should not have children if you're not prepared to raise them or give them to someone that can.

I'm a product from an affair and my parents completely fucked me up because they were miserable people who were too self involved with their own problems to properly raise me. Don't get me wrong, I still love my Mum and (step)dad, but love is not good enough to make up for incompetence.
I don't blame my Mum and Dad for their problems: My Dad was routinely beaten by his schizophrenic father and my Mum's dad committed suicide when she was a kid and had to raise herself.

My point is that having children does not solve problems, it just makes sure you create another human who rather have not been born.

It was a perfect idea. You can be Secretariat. You can fail and be the most horrible thing in one moment, and you might even fall for it. But even at that, you can be a legend and the realest thing for it.

The problem is it wasn't just the poster. Which is kinda awkward writing since almost every movie uses like three to five themes for their campaigns.

This is a myth. I'm an economist allow me to alleviate some fears. Over population is quite literally impossible which I will demonstrate with a thought experiment.

Suppose there is a country. This country has 500 people working inside of it and producing goods to support 500 people. If the population grows to say 700 someone may say oh no how will this country produce for 700. Well obviously 500 people don't have to produce for 700 because there are now actually 700 people ready to produce for 700. Over population in this sense is a myth because whenever someone is born they actually offer an opportunity for more resources to be made.

Now what if a country or planet is running out of resources (which ours is not despite what people may tell you). Well simple supply and demand will fix it as oil becomes more and more expensive renewable energy sources get more and more cheap comparatively and replace this also happens with advancement as food becomes in short supply it becomes more valuable to invest in new projects like say tower farms.

>What's the point of getting married if you're not having children?

Because if you're with someone long enough, you tend to get intertwined financially, emotionally, socially, etc, so there's really no reason not to get married for the actual legal and financial benefits.

But if you're going to live separately, have separate finances, never buy anything together, and plan on breaking up at some point, then no, there's no point to getting married.

Bold claim. It is when speaking about microeconomic theory in the long term but in reality yes you are right but my point still stands because in an economy in perfect equilibrium this would be correct. Also automaton falls under capital and automization actually creates more jobs by growing the economy such as how after ATMs were invented more bank clerks job spaces were open. So if you are wondering why employment figures don't match the perfect economy in my thought experiment its due to things like the business cycle and globalization.

Dude, the birthrate in industrialized countries is in steep decline, to the point where some governments are actually trying in vain to convince people to have kids. The reason the population has been rising so steadily is because modern medicine has decreased mortality considerably but people didn't realize and continued breeding at a high rate (this is why countries with high birth rates also tend to have high mortality rates). This is why most apocalyptic reports about growth rate tend to only predict what will happen by 2050, because it’s generally expected to start declining after that. I’m not saying no problems have been caused by this (certainly have) but the declining birth rate makes it evident that growth will eventually curb on its own.

Right, but he was FORCED to have that talk. He's aware that bad things happen, but they're not to be talked about. You sweep them under the rug, you ignore them, you don't talk about them. If your brother is saying weird fatalistic shit, you brush it off with "Oh, he'd tell me if something was wrong!" because then you can keep pretending everything is okay.

Everything about him is 'ignore anything bad'. He flat out says that the universe is a cruel and uncaring void, and the only way to be happy is to busy yourself with meaningless nonsense until you die.

Reminder Bojack did nothing wrong.

OK, not nothing, but:
>It was Penny that came onto him, and it's not like she's 13.
>It was also Emily that came onto him, after Todd rejected her, and Bojack was both drunk and not really aware of her relationship with Todd.
>Todd has been leeching off Bojack basically all his technically adult life, and Bojack has bailed him out on more than one occasion.
>Princess Carolyn would be just as fucked up without him, and even then, he sends her off to "not drag her down".
>Dianne's marriage is better off thanks to her relationship with Bojack putting her flaws and issues out in the open.
>Sarah Lynn was fucked up by her parents and her sudden fame, Bojack failed to save her (first by indifference, then by incompetence), but so did many people
> Peanut butter's big break came from aping Horsin Around.

Bojack is far from perfect, but the framing that he fucks up everything and everyone that comes near him is bullshit. Everything and everyone is already fucked.
>>
>>84832195
>Right, but he was FORCED to have that talk. He's aware that bad things happen, but they're not to be talked about. You sweep them under the rug, you ignore them, you don't talk about them. Not "forced". Diane brought it up to him because his brother didn't and he chose to go have the talk.

Compare this to how many times Diane and Bojack and other characters have been "forced" to talk about/deal with how they really feel and still fail to actually to utter words... unless it's some kind of condescending/insulting diatribe or criticism.

>>He flat out says that the universe is a cruel and uncaring void, He flat out says that the universe is a cruel and uncaring void, and the only way to be happy is to busy yourself with meaningless nonsense until you die.

Which is pretty much the advice Bojack was also given earlier: there is no control. The world is a mess. You just have to learn to live in it.

PB isn't particularly poetic about it, but he's got the basic idea. He knows that life doesn't owe him shit and happiness doesn't happen TO you. It's a shitty place and the happiness is the stuff you make/create- particularly with your relationships.

People get caught up so much on that one single line that they ignore all the times when PB does admit he has feelings, that things do make him sad, but that he still tries and doesn't just wallow in his sadness or act bad things don't happen.

What's he supposed to say? That the universe is small and full of stuff that cares about you and that the most important thing is making a mark on the universe so that you will continue on for all eternity?

There's also this

A large theme of the show is fuck your intentions/motives/trueself. Actions are what ultimately matter. What you do is more important than who you are. Maybe you're a good person, think good things, but if you have shit habits than that's all that people can be expected to judge you for. Because really that's all that matters. It's narcissistic to keep hurting people but expect them to still think you're a good person because you say you are deep down.
>>
>>84834188
Plus the Oscar race ended in such a shitty cop-out. PB lost the list of nominees for the announcement ceremony, made some up off the top of his head, and suddenly the entire plot we've been expected to care about this whole season is flushed down the drain, with no actual closure whatsoever.
>>
>>84835615
I like that Sebastian St. Clair was a huge middle finger to that world view of Diane's.

He wasn't even in the movie. And he wouldn't have ended up a chill guy for winning. Todd and him still would have fought because of the underlying anger there, he burnt his bridges on his own, second after he won he'd have ended up just as alone.

Would have loved his oscar acceptance speech though.
>>
>>84835615
Most of Bojack is people believing they're something grand until they crash, at which point they drag themselves through the mud long enough to go right back to what they were doing.
>>
>>84836310
Exactly. The juxtaposition of Diane doing drugs to fit in and the scene in the diner where she's trying to guilt everyone around her into obeying some asinine law was wonderful.

Diane wants to believe she isn't a selfish person because she gloms on to popular causes and ideas, which is just as selfish as anything Bojack's ever done. She was horrible this season.
>>
>>84837556
I wouldn't say that's most of the characters. I'd say Diane and Bojack for sure. Some side hollywoo people too, by nature of being hollywoo people.

But PC really is just a hard worker catching tough breaks. Todd doesn't think he'd grand at all. PB hardly crashes as much nor fit much of that at all.

Even sarah lynn doesn't fit that as much. She was a druggie partier but grand ego wasn't her issue. She was very self aware that she was a part of the whole childstar-superpopstar-poststartrash cycle and predicted her own death. From childhood to her death she just wanted a simpler life and friends but was stuck in a cycle.

Keep going forward is a theme though it's less of a positive one. More keep going forward isn't enough, if you don't examine yourself and change your actions you'll end up in a regretful cycle until you die.

That's kind of why the planetarium scene fucked me up. Because I was expecting it to be the dirty mattress in a hotel. That's where a conventional death would have occurred. Sarah Lynn just giving out while they're in a planetarium, enjoying what is the probably closest thing either of them have had to a normal moment in their adult relationship... That's fucking rough. Because you could have written that as a starting point.

The other thing I keep coming back to is how fundamentally similar Sarah Lynn and Bojack are. They're both totally aware of their behaviors. They're both totally aware of the likely consequences. Neither one of them can stop.

Judah knew that merging with the big firm would be a good career move for him and PC, but he knew that PC wouldn't want to do it because she hates the big firms.

When their firm is going belly up and PC is absolutely desperate, Judah realizes that it's the perfect opportunity to tell her about the merger idea, but ultimately decides against it, knowing that, while the merger would make PC (and him) money, she wouldn't be happy, so he tells her to go live one of her other 8 lives instead.

Judah is literally the best person on the show.

what?
>>
>people think Bojack's story will conclude
You're missing the point. Life doesn't wrap itself up in a neat bow after 20 minutes.

Bojack suffers from lifelong depression that he erroneously believes is tied to his success but is in fact personal and existential. Princess Carolyn is codependent and self-destructive. Mr PB is a self-deluding nihilist with jealousy and abandonment issues. Diane is a narcissistic yuppie too obsessed with how things should be to fix how things are.

None of them are going to change, none of them are going to find an epiphany and be happy. They are who they are, and they'll struggle with themselves all their lives.

It's funny, at the end of every season Bojack sees something that gives him a swell of hope, but all it seems to do is keep him from committing suicide.
>>
>>84850678
>Anyone else get extremely turned on by Ana jerking Bojack off?

>>

Who actually has feelings (a wider variety than the rest of the cast) and actually did trust his wife until she went off and made out with his friend and then told her she was going to another country but ended up crashing at said friend's place.

He trusted his others wives. He trusted Dianne. They've just all betrayed his trust.

>>

There's no such think as a valid pro-life argument. No child should have to be born into a home that doesn't want them.
>>
>>84853233
There's this claim that pro-lifers make, that having abortions causes breast cancer, even though it's some pseudoscience that was debunked years ago, and abortions lead to less health problems than carrying a baby to term.

Pro-lifers are very dishonest people.
>>
>>84854357
Pro-life wasn't even a thing until conservative politicians decided to make it one in the 80s, and it's basically just a propaganda tactic designed to make religious people guilty enough to vote Republican (even though the Bible says nothing about it and the only sect of Christianity with actual dogma that might be construed as "pro-life" is Catholicism, whose members continue to skew Democratic because of JFK and shit) and also distract them from from the rest of their platform and all of the other insidious legislation they push

>>

There was that and the fact that up until relatively recently, white southern voters had this thing about catholics. JFK being catholic was a big deal in his election run.
>>
>>84838028
Diane started coming apart this season and the latter half of s2 because St. Clair really made her realize she was the exact kind of person she was talking to BoJack about. She realized that even though she supports the causes, she doesn't have what it takes to actually go out and do the thing. Despite railing against the concept to BoJack, she had her own "true self" that ended up not being able to do what she thought it could. Like >>84836310
said, St. Clair's life was a middle finger to her, not because it disproved her "true self" views but because she realized she wasn't practicing what she preached at ALL.

>>84820460
>everyone learned a lesson
Yeah, and they promptly ignored them and went right back to their old ways.

One of the great tragedies of the show is that characters give and receive a lot of legitimately good insight. They just don't apply it at all, or severely misunderstand it.

>>84821088
>bojack finally seemed at peace, ready to learn from the past
>ready to be the kind of father figure that he couldn't successfully be to Sarah Lynn
>"i want to be like you"
Fuck, I felt so bad for him. He almost had it, didn't he?
>>
>>84853416
>until she went off and made out with his friend
BoJack kissed her, and she immediately recoiled. PB's got trust issues. Trust issues that are completely understandable, but issues all the same.
>>
>>84853250
It doesn't neatly wrap itself up, but that doesn't mean people can't change. They can get better. The series isn't going to end with anyone's problems being completely resolved, it's about small incremental changes. You don't realize you've gotten better until you look back, and I think if anything the series will end like that. Nobody is going to be cured, but they'll be in better places, not wrestling with their demons quite as violently.
>>
>>84799238

While I don't condone her for getting the abortion, she didn't want it (And neither did Mr Peanutbutter), the offhanded casualty to it all was the thing that made it weird.

Not saying she should be crying and contemplating the chosen loss of potential human life, they even joke about that with the videos of baby puppies, but it still felt weird. I dunno.

The episode did end perfectly with the singer wanting to keep her baby
>>
>>84855786
It was played that way for comedy (which thank god I didn't want to see soap opera-tier drama about fighting whether or not they should keep it) and also because aborting a totally accidental child really isn't a huge deal, it's rational, especially when the fetus is the product of two mentally troubled people in a failing marriage
>>
>>84855329
>that doesn't mean people can't change

I still think it's an overreaction to get mad at that. It's almost as stupid as the people who got mad that Danny Rand isn't Asian but a white guy, like in the comics.

Marvel did it because they make fuck loads of cash from China. But they can't show anything positive about Tibet, or else the Chinese government will shut it down quickly. So, to appeal to a broader audience (aka make more money), they just change the ethnicity of some of the characters.

Strange is a white dude from New York(?) in a Tibetan monastery. Why can't they have other non-Tibetan people there?
>>
>>84817146

Having abortions does not cause breast cancer, true. That's really stupid.

Having abortions does, however, damage the uterus and makes future pregnancies less likely to successfully develop.
