Not a bad season but it felt like a bridge, a set up for another season they already knew they were given the green light on. Lacked the impact of the earlier two seasons, felt like less progress and development happened.

There's a lot to season 3, don't get me wrong I liked it. Individual episodes were fine just the season narrative wasn't really doing anything. I get the feeling Bojack's arc has already been plotted out and once they knew they didn't have to end the series yet they slowed it right down while it was still profitable. It's not exactly filler because, like you say, there's a lot of backstory and exposure for the extended main cast.

It doesn't neatly wrap itself up, but that doesn't mean people can't change. They can get better. The series isn't going to end with anyone's problems being completely resolved, it's about small incremental changes. You don't realize you've gotten better until you look back, and I think if anything the series will end like that. Marvel did it because they make fuck loads of cash from China. But they can't show anything positive about Tibet, or else the Chinese government will shut it down quickly. So, to appeal to a broader audience (aka make more money), they just change the ethnicity of some of the characters.
