It's obvious which episodes were meant for Season 2B and which ones were meant for Season 3. Ford was meant to be a special guest for 2B, only to fuck off for some unknown reason.

The finale was likely planned from the start, though there were definitely some things that were cut from that.

But the important thing is: Nothing was actually down lorewise for Season 3. The biggest proof we have of that is that we didn't get some rushed halfassed version of it in the last few episodes, which crammed basically every idea they were planning for later, with no regards to logic or quality.

The reason we didn't get any answers to the circle is that Hirsh never knew. He was going to write that as he went along (seeing as how Love God put focus on Robbie for no particular reason), but gave up on the show beforehand.

"Hackposting" memes aside, there are a few legitimate gripes people have with him.

That interview he gave right after Gravity Falls ended, where he said he was ready to quit after the end of season 1 and leave the show on a cliffhanger, really soured his image in the eyes of a lot of people. There was plenty of noise before about him being a quitter, procrastinator, or sandbagging, but they weren't really proven until that interview.

Gravity Falls was originally supposed to be one season for each month of summer, three seasons, in Alex's words. He went against those words when it became clear to him that making a quality cartoon takes a lot of work, or maybe its just the fame and popularity got to his head.

Alex on twitter is not a very likable person all the time. He's actually a bit of a grouch, and when he isn't doing fun things like this Cipher Hunt, he's going off on fans for being annoying shippers, or even just having political views different from him. He's had a lot of bad looking moments, "Lets see your cartoon", threatening to report people to the FBI if they jokingly say they'll kill him over some silly plot, that absolutely embarrassing "Trump fans emitting flies and foghorns" strawman tweet, just to name a few. He comes off as an ass, and his virtue signaling liberalism would make even Seth MacFarlane blush. People follow him for Gravity Falls, not to hear about how Trump is going to be the next Hitler... even someone said as much to him and Alex reacted like a MAJOR douche.

The poor handling of characters like Wendy or Pacifica would require yet another longpost to cover, but I'm nearing the character limit.

The funny thing is, he went and made a Candy and Dipper episode anyway. Also, there was that "12 year olds should focus on poptarts and Pokemon" thing he said, when half the series was literally Mabel and Dipper chasing various love interests.

Actually, Candy and Dipper was a big fat waste because, despite being two nerds that could've had a lot of chemistry together, Alex just sort of pushed Candy into the background and instead made Grenda the more dominant of Mabel's friends so that he could have her get some fanciful happy ending with a prince to make tumblr hambeasts feel better. Same with Pacifica and Dipper, they managed to at least try, and had Pacifica show some interest in the mystery stuff Dipper was doing... for a whooping one episode. Then she was back to being uninterested, detached, and snobby when they finally brought her back.

Wendy was handled like a schizophrenic mess... either Dipper wants her or he doesn't, she's an important character and then she's not. Des[ote beomg a part of the Mystery Shack crew, she never felt like a part of the main cast, unlike Soos, Stan, or hell even Grenda in 2B.

I suppose they got off easy, because Mabel was the center focus female, and she went from the most beloved character to the most hated, all because Alex can't write a female character for shit and give her any degree of accountability.

I felt that is one of common weakness of male writers; they usually have hard time to polish interesting female characters, so they end up creating many characters as possible to see what happened. Alex can't write female characters.

Mabel never got confronted for handing over a Super Science Object that wasn't her property.
The show is about characters, and that would have been a vital character building moment.
Bill could have said "thanks for handing the rift over" when they were forming the circle. That setting off an argument would have flowed better than "Stan being grumpy while an evil demon is about to eat the world".

Wendy needed her own "soos and the real girl / blendins game" episode. (her VA was in Age of Ultron, so I'll give Alex a mild pass on her screentime)
She went directly from "unatainable object" to... well, nothing much.
Dipper's whole deal was wanting to grow up to fast, and an episode focusing on Wendy's dealing with her family would be a great moment for her to be a mentor to him. "Don't rush it dude. My life is hectic, enjoy it while you can."

Alex rushed and didn't write as well as the first season.

Sure, the internet invented a lot of lore when the show wasn't as deep as we thought.

Gravity Falls was built up to be, and was for literal years, a great show with hidden adult humor and a deep plot.

And then he shat all over it by forcing it to end way too fucking early in a disappointment of a series finale.

The character arcs were fickle and insubstantial and 2B REALLY REALLY dropped the ball with them, and as others have said, Wendy's character was always static as all hell, even when he could've easily had an episode focusing on her family. He didn't seem to know what to do with Bill after having him mess with the town a bit and Ford after having him enter the show.

What bothers me too is that a lot of Season 2B is wasted time.

Not only is there an extra season, season and a half of material crammed in there, a lot of that time is filled by space filler episodes like Roadside Attraction, so the character and plot relevant stuff gets even less time to develop.

The wheel is the perfect symbol of the show itself. It's something that fans read too far into and assumed it was building up to something that it never intended to. Even Hirsh said that he only worked the wheel into the finale because so many people wanted there to be an "answer" to what it was.
