You just posted lyrics to one of the songs, which is your answer. The music fucking made that movie.

The writing was good, the music was good and the animation was amazing. Dreamworks at that stage knew how to use color and light to its advantage more than any other production company this (and road to el dorato) should have revolutionized things and set a new standard for how movies look and feel, but it seems we went wrong somewere
>>
The movie was the last great accomplishment of traditional American animation before it was raped to death by CGI
>>
>>84701631
It's not consistently great, but the highs are amazing. Deliver Us and the Burning Bush scene were both superb.

>that he and his people killed and destroyed anyone who didn't believe in his god
No they didn't, they were perfectly willing to pass by pagans who didn't trouble and coexist with them. God ordered them to destroy certain groups for their wickedness, which was centuries in the making, or attacking Israel itself.

>even killed the tribe of nomads who saved him from the desert
No, he didn't. Desert Santa's group isn't synonymous with all Midians. The group the Israelites attacked was for tempting them with apostasy in a specific effort to weaken and destroy Israel.

>why was this movie so damn GOOD?
Good question. Animated movies are tricky because there are often multiple directors credited and it's difficult to say how much control they had and who was the most influential one. In this case it was probably a 50/50 split between Simon Wells and Brenda Chapman.

Also god damn, Wells flopped himself out of directing for a decade with Time Machine, and then probably killed his career for good with Mars Needs Moms.

Once I called you brother
Once I thought the chance to make you laugh
Was all I ever wanted...
And even now I wish that God
Had chose another
Serving as your foe on his behalf
Is the last thing that I wanted...This was my home
All this pain and devastation
How it tortures me inside
All the innocent who suffer
From your stubbornness and pride...You who I called brother
Why must you call down another blow?Let my people go
Thus saith the Lord

This movie is actually hilarious garbage because in the process of making the plot more complex they made their villain so sympathetic that the original biblical intent is blasted out of the water. This movie told me "God is good and Moses wins" and I walked away with it thinking "I'm so glad I'm an atheist because I wanna marry Ramses"

Also the movie is so good on a technical level because the creators were a bunch of Disney defectors who were known at the time for making The Lion King. So basically all the heavy hitters of the 90s got together and decided to show up Disney, so they had to put their all into it.
>>
>>84705404

I got chills at "AND THERE SHALL BE A GREAT CRY HEARD THROUGHOUT EGYPT SUCH AS THERE HAS NEVER BEEN, NOR EVER WILL BE AGAIN".
>>
>>84706158
Why does the movie become garbage by retelling the story of Exodus in a way that makes Ramses more sympathetic and egyptians less like one-dimensional villains?

Traditional animation won't come back as long as movies are made on a for-profit basis. No amount of crowdfunding can cover the costs of a feature lenght animated film that doesn't use automated animating software like flash.
>>

Man listen your faith or lack thereof is your prerogative but as a general rule in life and especially on the internet don't go boasting about your atheism.
Regardless if they are or not, every time someone says "I'm glad i'm an atheist" they just sound like a huge narcissistic asshole on par with any holier than thou Wednesday and Sunday service Christian.
Seriously if you want people to know you don't believe in God then keep that shit agnostic or vaguely nihilistic and people will put two and two together.
Otherwise you are just asking to be dismissed as an "intellectual" fedora tipper.

24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.

Depending on how you read the "burning sulfur...out of the heavens" part, God just up and dropped a fucking meteorite on Sodom and Gomorrah.

old testament was hardcore and pretty damn fucked up.

>david proceeded to bring back 200, meaning he chopped off 200 dicks.

>lot's daughters drugged, then raped their dad while he was unconscious to have a bunch of kids

>the entire canaan takeover
>including butchering an entire civilization down to the last man, woman, and child

>the story of samson included him butchering entire armies with a donkey jawbone
>>
>>84706158

God fucks Pharaoh's shit up because he wants to make an example of him. "This is what happens when you mess with my chosen people".

Whether Rameses was actually not that bad of a guy or not is irrelevant. He and his family are responsible for subjugating and abusing the Israelites, and this is God's answer for that injustice.

Remember, this is the Old Testament where EVERYONE fucks up at some point or another, and since sin is sin before God's eyes, it is visited upon by temporal retribution. Even Moses was barred from entering the Holy Land himself because he doubted God before drawing water from a rock in the desert.
>>
>>84709081
nah, the ten commandments literally say that YHWH was to be worshipped before the other gods, not that there were no other gods.

but yes, Exodus literally says that YHWH hardened rameses' heart.

Actually, while it does reference other gods, only YHWH is referred to as the "living god", since the others are merely wood, clay, or stone idols.

>>
>>84709957

That's a distinction theological scholars still make today, as well as arguments refuting Gnostic heresies that see God as a glorified watchmaker or Manachaeism that taught that God in the OT was actually the evil and cruel Demiurge. The Christian God is one that sustains and nurtures creation throughout all time, continually recreating the universe in his presence and love. As opposed to being bound to only a single time and place, and just coming around to do one thing and then fuck off somewhere else.

There's a Jewish practice of scriptural exigesis where you take a story that isn't fleshed out and develop a scenario with more involved details based on the characters to reinforce the message of the scene. I forget the Hebrew name for it now, but it's basically what you have here in both the Cecil B Demille Ten Commandments and the animated one.

That's cool to know, thanks anon.

I can recognise that it's nowhere close to being biblically accurate (for whatever value that has) but when I watched this again when I was older I loved it more than I ever did when I was young. Besides the music being on point (well, most of it) there was so much I liked about how it showed the story.

Case in point: The Angel of Death scene. It's not triumphant or flashy. No music like the other plagues, just the wrath of God. It isn't presented as a great victory for Moses:

>Yet he doesn't want to, he wants to be like them
>Brothers spite him, which IS THE APPROPRIATE RESPONSE and go out on to town to chill out, drink, fuck bitches, whatever, they fucking work for it, they should be allowed to, yet the movie treats this as a sin (cuz bible lul)
>Joseph has arguments with them, they gang up on him and sell his ass into slavery
>Sold into slavery, but treated like a worker, moves up the ranks? Profit???
>Treated like shit after a history of being spoiled because God told his dad he was special in a dream, just God fucking with him I guess

Ramses was a perfect cinnamon roll before he ever even had a son. It was his dad who actually enacted all the bad shit in the movie, and then that guy dies offscreen and is never spoken about again. Ramses only says no to Moses because he doesn't want to go backsies on Dad's laws.

Also, the actual Ramses is pretty low on the list of historical pharaohs who could've been the one from the bible. The writers probably picked him because the name is recognizable.

The Bible went through a bunch of translations. It could've originally meant was that God allowed the Pharoah's heart to be hardened. Not that God forced him to react that way, more that since God knows all he knew that's how he would react.
>>
>>84718686
Old Testament God was more like a tribal deity than anything. Hell, the old testament acknowledges that other gods exist, if only to say "My god is better than your god"

He was trashing the entire market inside the temple yelling "YOU HAVE TURNED MY FATHER'S HOUSE INTO A HOUSE OF THIEVES." (I think, been a while since I ready the specific part of the book), and basically just Hulk Smashing everything in general.

Adam just let pussy distract him from obeying God.

I think there was another story where Adam begs forgiveness, and God takes pity on him. God orders him and Eve to stand in two separate rivers for a shit ton of days, with the promise that if they don't leave until the time is up, they may return to the Garden.

Adam is chilling in his river, and Eve is chilling in hers. Then some douche Angel comes (Might've been Lucifer? Don't remember) and he tells Eve that she's totally free to go, and to go get Adam.

Eve, like the dumb bitch she is, believes him and goes to get Adam. Forgot the rest of the story, either Adam stays in the river because he doesn't believe God would let them go so quickly or he also leaves the river, God finds out and kicks them down to Earth.

Adam didn't fuck up by letting Even talk him into also eating the apple, he fucked up by letting the snake into the garden in the first place.

Bible isn't really meant to be a "story." It's more of a learning tool for Christians, and a collection of christian......"myths" if you want to put it that way, like modern collection of greek mythological stories, and in the case of Revelations, is a warning of what will happen someday.

There's a lot of ways you can add story to some of the stuff in the Bible without contradicting the source material.

Also plenty of ways to fuck up and blow it spectacularly, in the case of the Noah movie.
>>
>>84732456

Different books of the Bible have different purposes, but the canon as a whole points towards the story of salvation through different periods of time. Starting with God's covenants with the different patriarchs in the the old testament (and how they keep fucking them up every time) and culminating in the final covenant mediated by Jesus with his passion, death and resurrection. Then the rest of the New Testament is part historical narrative and part instructional text regarding the early Church, leaving off with Johns' apocalyptic vision regarding the end of the world and the final fulfillment of creation reunited with God's presence.

You fuck up interpretations of Scripture by ignoring their context within that larger work, or ignoring the social and political contexts in which the different books were written. Just like how you analyze any other secular text by looking at the time in which it was written, and the purpose for the intended audience, so you analyze the books of the Bible.

Ritual law in Leviticus prescribes the old punishment for homosexual actions. That punishment is no longer binding to Christians.

The idea that homosexual actions are sinful and go against God's ordained order of creation is something that is older and was instituted in Genesis when God consecrated the sacrament of marriage between Adam and Eve. That has not changed.

He forgave his brothers (after fucking with them a bit) because he realised their actions were just part of God's keikaku to save the whole family

This. The Old Testament never explicitly states that other gods do not exist (At least, not to my recollection). Hell, the Ten Commandments simply requires that you have no other gods before God. He doesn't want to take his believers by force since he gave them free will, even the none believers, also if I remember right moses warned him and his non belivers before the taking and he was prudent about it, you'd think after all that happened he would at least slap some blood on his door for the sake of your child and then go back to do the fighting.
Its like saying, hey guys I like you, don't go to the party, I'm going to shoot everyone and then you show up anyway while he's spraying into the crowd and get shot then complain about getting shot..
Im not painting a good light on god here but that's basically it.

There is a debate in Theology whether or not Jesus told Judas to betray him since he knew the Romans were going to get him eventually and keep it a secret from the others.
Judas kills himself because despite it being Christ's orders he still couldn't get over selling him out.

That's the Gnostic take on it and like much of Gnosticism, most mainline Christian schools of thought now reject it because it invalidates concepts of
free will.

What the Gospels tell us is that Judas found Jesus' teachings too extreme snd he doubted that he was the Messiah, so he went to the Jewish religious leaders to have him arrested. However, he did not want him to be executed, and upon hearing the Romans crucified him, Judas commites suicide. Jesus knows that Judas is going to betray him, but does nothing to stop him or turn aside his eventual fate because he knows it has to happen this way for the prophecies to be fulfilled, and also to satisfy the new covenant on behalf of God and humanity.

Job never gives up on his faith in God, but he does question why God allowed this happen, only for God to appear to him and go "LISTEN HERE, YOU LITTLE SHIT, WHEN YOU'RE ALL POWERFUL AND RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING THE UNIVERSE AND ALL THE CREATURES, LAWS OF NATURE AND BEINGS WITHIN, THEN YOU CAN GIVE ME YOUR OPINION."

Neither start out truly appreciating that. Ramses thinks that he's created a strong Egypt because he rules unopposed in a time of peace and plenty with slave labor out the ass. Moses thinks freeing the slaves is going to be easy because >muh brothers. And as shit starts to go wrong both have to stick to their ideals and it changes them as they come to appreciate how serious the situation is.

You can't really blame anyone except Yahweh, since he foresaw all of this.

That's the thing with being an omnipotent, omniscient being. You already know everything that's going to happen, so nothing is really anyone's fault. They had no choice to begin with, the path was set.

I'm aware of the stigma associated with Gnostic views and am in no way giving it my full support.
It's just I find the idea appealing and reasonable that Christ knowing he had to be betrayed over to the Romans chose his betrayer as to circumvent the damnation that would have been on the head of whoever genuinely sold out the Son of God only for it to end in the suicide of Judas and him being damned anyway.
To me it speaks some more on the compassion of Christ who would change the course of fate in order to spare just one soul as well as to the absoluteness of God's will and plan that if it is his intent that the betrayer is to be damned then he is damned.

Because Southern Baptists are one of the lager denominations, we naturally have more bad seeds.
Titus 1:16- "They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work."

Matthew 7:16-20- "You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits."

Westboro Baptist is not typical.

But that's wrong. CG is straight-up more expensive than traditional. The longterm costs are lower due to being able to reuse models, but most things never last long enough to even reach that point.

Yes, but Satan is an agent of God, known as the adversary to TEST humans and their willingness to continue their faith in God. Lucifer is an entirely different character since he's did openly rebel against God and lost his status as the Morning Star. Also Nephilim used to exist after the Flood because reasons. I still don't understand the point of Nephilim in the first place since Angels didn't have humanoid characteristics until Catholics or Renaissance artists stole the Greek and Roman depictions of Thanatos as a what we know of as a cherub.

The imagery of winged robed adult figures people usually think of as "angels" are from Zoroastrianism. The concept of exceptionally large/strong people being half-human half-_____ beings is common all over the world. In northwestern europe, they were half-giants, in the middle-east they were the children of women and angels, in russia they were the result of women being raped by bears (this is where "russian bear" comes from).
It's all pretty silly, and basically just standing in for recessive genetics, gigantism, etc which weren't understood in the bronze age.

show me this, because from Adam and Eve onward, God's policy has been to let people make their own mistakes.

The question is that whenever you let someone "make their own mistake," someone else suffers as a result. Therefore, by letting people make their own mistakes, God is complicit in their suffering, and is therefore an accessory to all crime and misfortune on earth

While that does include a number of "solutions" it doesn't address all of them.
St. Augustine f.e proposed that God can be so good that he can make wonderful things come from evil. So stuff we perceive to be evil are in fact just stepping stones towards God's act of grace. Not saying I fully buy it just pointing out that people have solved the question of evil without conceding God's all mighty and all good status.
>>

>So stuff we perceive to be evil are in fact just stepping stones towards God's act of grace.
I don't buy that argument, because I've heard of lots of people who had fucking miserable lives, and they died miserably, and literally nothing came of it or changed because they lived.

There are a shitload of people who suffer tremendously and die in vain. Like 99.9999999% of all homeless people.

>>
>>84756985
To play the Devil's advocate, you aren't God and thus not every single bit of information and how it all fits is available to you. As God it could very well be that by letting 100000 people suffer horrible lives will inspire 1 or 10000000000 to end a certain type of suffering all together.
The single thread can't grasp the bug picture of the tapestry.
>>
>>84754784
Because if we had no ability to choose poorly, we would not have free will.

The whole point of us is that we have free will. God wants to be praised (and rightfully so), and He already has angels created solely to worship Him. But our praise and adoration is worth far more because we consciously choose to praise Him.

This is also why God doesn't just make the sky light up with "The Christians are right, worship me please" in neon fireworks. If there was no plausible deniability, people wouldn't be able to choose to deny Christ, and therefore would have no choice but to praise Him, defeating the whole point of creation.
>>
>>84734354
I like how, at 3:00, it looks like Moses want to ask Jethro for Tzipporah's hand but keeps stuttering on it, until she says "For fuck's sake, he want to marry me" And then Jethro hugs them both
>>
>>84757284
but someone who's all-powerful wouldn't need to make a compromise like that in the first place, such a compromise is inherently the product of some degree of helplessness -- you can't solve ALL evil, so you merely choose the lesser one. This would not be an issue for someone who's omnipotent.
>but he can't go in and fix everything, he's got to let humans have free will

and this is the root of the problem >>84757583

the inclusion of Free Will is inherently a demonstration that God is not all-good. The Rwandan President's freedom to choose to slaughter all Tutsis does NOT outweigh the Tutsi's right to live in an environment free of ethnic cleansing.

Human suffering exists so God's greatness can be revealed. If life were always perfect, what use would we have for God? Think of it like a storyteller or author. If there's no bad thing to serve as the catalyst for the story, the characters can never reveal their true ability and character by struggling to succeed.

(Personally, I chalk some of it up to God making use of the reality he created, though. If I trip, it may just be because there happened to be a rock there. God created a set of physics and natural laws so intricate and seemingly self-sustaining, scientists can spend their whole lives studying one tiny section of it and never get close to truly understand it. It makes sense to me that some aspects of it would just happen by following the rules of reality. Of course, if God didn't want it to happen, He would have prevented it, but...)

Exactly, this was literally a power-play by Yahweh to show his strength. Egypt was the perfect target at the time.

The Judeo-Christian god stems from the rising cult (read: religious political party) of Yahweh. Yahweh was originally a divine warrior god, patron of Israel and Judah, and while we don't know a lot about him, we do know that he was always fond of having a chosen people. As time went on, Yahweh started to take over the rest of the West Semitic pantheon. He overthrew (some say always was) El, whose name means "God", the chief of the pantheon and equivalent to Zeus or Odin in position. He took on the good qualities of the hero storm god Ba'al, whose name means "Lord". Over time this cult grew to the point of monotheism, refusing to share power with other gods. None were safe, even the local fishing/agriculture god Dagon, who is depicted as wicked in the Bible.
>>
>>84758722
>>84758966
This whole thing was started because the works of Joseph were forgotten in Egypt and the people of Israel were mistreated. God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and struck back. He wanted to show his wonders to ensure that the Egyptians were so pants-shittingly scared of the Israelites that they would never even think of enslaving them again.

Old Testament God was kind of a hard ass, in case you hadn't heard.
>>
>>84758722
>>84759241
well I mean, even if God was hardening Pharaoh's heart, he still was kind of a dick for enslaving the Israelites for so long. So he's not an innocent dindu nuffin good ol' boy here. unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all of the Egyptian civilians who got caught up by the plagues

Hey, I am the resident /tg/ El-fag here, I'll sort of help you out on this because it's complicated.

Basically, You have the right pieces, but you're wrong.

Yahweh started out as the caananite god Elion.

Now the complicated thing here is that Ba'al, El and such are both titles and god figures, basiclly, each one means Lord or God.

Elion himself was worshipped in Caanan culture as the parallel to Ashur.

You see back in them days, Gods were basically tied to cities.

Now here is where it gets complicated. You see, Elion became Yahweh because the Judean people were formed.

Jerusalem's god was Yahweh, who was Elion.

It's not that yahweh somehow "fought" and killed the other gods, he was simply the "Skyfather"

Elion is Yahweh is Ashtur.

And because all of this is brought on by Indo-European myths, we can draw all Skyfathers from the say Root of of ALL known skyfathers.

Anu.

Anu is the name of god.

Yahweh is simply a worship of a sect of Anu that has forgotten and eclipsed his Pantheon.

>Archer is now Moses

I don't understand
>>
>>84759640
To hammer my point home.

Every Indo European religion has exactly

Skyfather
Earthen mother
God of thunder
Godess of fertility
God of Hunt
God(ess) of Evil
God(ess) of the underworld

Skyfather figures usually are born from a primordial motherfigure usually representing the earth and a Father representing the Sky.

It's sort of a family tree basically.

If you wanted to see it as a sort of Family, Anu would be Yahweh's great-great-grandfather and Odin and Zeus would be his cousins and Tyr his uncle.

Because ironically, Tyr and Thor are some of the oldest recorded Gods in European History.
>>
>>84756676

Its what moves people, the god in all of us.
>>
>>84759935
well then the Holy Spirit could stand to do it's job a little bit harder because there are some real sickos out there
>>
>>84759640
>>84759837
Anu being the one Skyfather makes sense when you zoom all the way out, but the way I recount it, gods from original Indo-European split apart to create parallels and such, essentially reproducing gods. I argue that the birth of the Judeo-Christian god is the opposite, where he absorbs gods instead of becoming outright distinct. I am aware of the general use of "el" and "ba'al" as titles, but as far as I was reading there is a proper El/Elyon/Elion and a main Ba'al who is associated with lightning and heroisim.

It would be interesting to map out a full family tree of all Indo-European gods in that manner, but I've yet to see even decently complete trees outside of Greco-Roman so I doubt anyone is willing to put in the work.
>>
>>84760019

Anu himself as a family tree.

Down to Gilgamesh in fact.

Now the complication is from the fact that in the family tree, Tiamat is older.

HOWEVER, in Archaeological chronological order Anu is literally the oldest name for a god we have found.

So to map it out you'd actually need to point out do you do Archaeological or Mythological order.

Tiamet would probably be the oldest god, why Abzu is the oldest living "thing" as it's in fact the primordial sea from which all life was spawned.

I think probably one of my most favorite branches of the Indo-European Godheads is the Germanic path and comes at an apex in the Norse.

Tyr/Odin are the Skyfathers of Germanic and Norse mythology respectively, however, the most worshipped by far is Thor, the god of Storms and Heroism.

Now, one thing that actually greatly differences this path of Indo-European Dieties is the underlying Fatalism within the Germanic paths.

See, in Ashur, Ba'al Haddam, or even Zeus and so forth, we see dickish traits and heroism, but in Germanic lines, the Gods actually fail. They are ultimately killed off or are defeated by the Primordial enemies.

This is either because life in Germanic regions are particularly grim and harsh or because by some twist of fate, the Germanic mythology understands that Pantheons eventually get replaced by new gods.

It's also why Jack Kirby is a literary genius. Because his New Gods are an extension of Mythological work that has been happening for Thousands of years.

FTFY

this thread took a weird turn

But then who was Ra

Good point, thanks.

This is the first time in recent memory I've seen a FTFY that actually was fixing something properly.
>>
Yeah okay, but what about the Epicurean problem?
>>
>>84709391
You think it's bad and then the beat drops on I SEND MY SWORD I SEND MY SWORD THUS SAITH THE LORD
>>
>>84762949
it's "I send my scourge, I send my sword"
>>
>Oh fuck all my people are dying, I think I need to let the jews go
>God hardens his heart
>Fuck you moses I'll never let your people go

Its almost like God wanted to shit on egypt as hard as possible before the jews were set free

the archangels/god are depicted as on a whole other level from the pagan gods.
>>
>>84763504
HAHAHAHAHA

Why? I only assume because of american writing.
>>
>>84763600
yeah, pretty much.

the next season then depicted the mother of all monsters as fucking Eve instead of Echidna, and the season after that was leviathans who could take the shape of humans and devour everything, including angels and ghosts.

then there was some stuff about demons

then they took genesis 1:2, and decided the Darkness was a woman that was god's sister and super into Dean.

supernatural got dumb.

I only played through the demo, but I loved the representation of the primordial Earth as this sort of ever-shifting, half-complete space where the rules we know aren't necessarily fully in place.

Also the fucking music

So, we've got the Christian mythos in this game, Indian in Ashura's Wrath... Can we do Nigerian gods next? For pic related.

>leviathans who could take the shape of humans
leviathans like giant sea monsters?
>>
>>84764905
yup.

instead of sea monsters though, they were weird, giant-mouthed things that god sealed in purgatory(which is monster hell) because they kept eating all his creations.

ayo but that Jerry Springer ending though!

that's a real dick move, God. What happened to the whole "benevolent" gimmick?
>>
>>84760466
wrong, friend-o. Jesus places very high standards for charitable works and polite/forgiving public conduct in addition to belief. Martin Luthor, the ultimate shitposter, removed these sections from his protestant bibles because they inconveniently conflicted with his "faith alone earns salvation" meme
>>
>>84760749
>LOL AN ALL-BENEVOLENT GOD HAS NO OBLIGATION TO HELP THOSE BEING VICTIMIZED BY PEOPLE WHO CHOOSE TO DO EVIL, YOU'RE A FAGGOT FOR NOT GETTING THIS, KILL YOURSELF
you first
>>
>>84765427
>tell yourself to kill yourself then tell the imaginary you that told you to kill yourself to kill himself
you're better than this

Except YHWH doesn't need nor care about the concept of existence and is also stated to have created everything, which would include not only the concept of existence but the concept of concepts. YHWH wins again.

>Except YHWH doesn't need nore care about the concept of existence

Yes he does, that's why he ordains to create everything.

The concept of concepts is Brahman.

Everything is Brahman.

>>84765747
oh then you're alright

I've always wondered: Was that clip actually from something, or just created for malcolm in the middle?
