Do we know what animation style is going to be used?
Is it gonna be traditional hand-drawn like the original show, or is it gonna use Flash/Toon Boom?

WHERE THE FUCK IS RHONDA
>>
>>84671835
>>84672149
might just be my eyes seeing things that aren't there, but I think Helga's started to get affected by puberty(which doesn't surprise me, I can totally buy Helga being an early bloomer due to both her mom and Olga's physiques)

also these designs give me the impression that there might be a slight timeskip between the end of the show and the beginning of TJM(not a huge one, just possibly a year or so)

>>84673223
2016 is overall a pretty crappy year, but I won't deny that what good things have happened have been pretty great
>>
>>84673249
she'll probably be shown off with the rest of the school kids, she's not exactly a main character after all
>>
>>84673253
they're all being drawn with, like, proper legs now, so they all look taller
they used to just draw them down to the waist then add in teeny legs
>>
>>84673253
Not that anon, but how is this year crappy? What's bad about it for you?
>>
>>84673298
well Helga seems to have a slight curve to her chest that could indicate her beginning to get boobs for one thing

>>84673306
well besides all the celebrity deaths, global crises, mass shootings, terrorism, and America's political system becoming even more of a joke than usual, had a death in the family recently which I think is enough to mark a year as crappy
>>
>>84672044

he never left the 90's
>>
>>84673429
woooo slight boobs!

dude, if you let it get to you, the political joke system wins. also the terrorists. as for the global crises, remember they have all turned out to be fake every time, so don't worry about that.
just get a gun, and carry on
>>
>>84672390

well it helps that the original creator's behind it
>>
>>84672577

>When will the short man ever learn
>>
Anyone else hope that this is still set in the late 90s or maybe like 2001 at the latest? I mean, the primary demographic of people who are going to see this are in their mid 20s-early 30s who watched the show when they were kids.
>>
>>84671835
Are they older or are they still 9?
>>
>>84673614
it's not as if their timeframe ever made sense in the first place
>>
>>84673617
We don't know yet but going off these pics it seems reasonable to assume there's a slight timeskip.
>>
>>84672688
This looks great.
>>
>>84672063
Well, it's not gonna be traditional cel-based animation, I'm not even sure that exists anymore, but probably digital hand-drawn.
>>
>>84673474
oh I'm not letting it get to me(even if this election is the textbook definition of having to choose between a Douche and a Turd Sandwich)

>>84673617
hard to say, wouldn't be surprised if they skipped ahead a year or two though(although at their ages even a couple months can make a huge difference)

>>84673614
I'm assuming they're going to continue to try and hit the sort of timeless vibe the original show had(which the show was a master at achieving, Ed, Edd, n Eddy is pretty much the only real rival in that area it has)
>>
>>84672688
Oh well, now she doesn't run around bottomless anymore.
>>
>>84672528
Anon was probably referring to Steven Universe, he just said that those other cartoons were crappy.
>>
>>84673737
She could still be going commando.
>>
>>84673724
not really. the natural political processes give us douches.
this was literally the news media saying "if you won't play dancing monkey in our media circus, you aren't allowed to participate in the debates which decide the candidates"
it's extremely illegal and something needs to be done about it
>>
>>84673787
Sure, but now she wears a skirt. I always wondered what was wrong with Phoebe just wearing a shirt.
>>
>>84673827
nothing at all.
>>84673787
goes without saying.
>>
>>84673474
>just get a gun, and carry on
/k/, what are you doing here?
>>
>>84673918
well until the other day I was of the "guns are great but they're too heavy and expensive to carry around with you, and if you don't have a car you have nowhere to put it while you're not wearing it" camp
but now that my mom nearly got overrun by a mob of angry cop killers, I'm starting to think it's time to invest
>>
>>84673710
Hey Arnold! stopped being animated with cels for the past several years of it's run.
>>
>>84674115
I can see that in the later seasons, digital always looks more clean.
>>
>>84673710
Steven Universe is animated on paper, so it's still possible.

>>
>>84674299
uhh no, it's drawn on cintiqs. no animation studio still keeps paper around. and even if it was, it would just be traced from that paper on cintiqs.

that much falseflagging from that one weird TMS guy, it didn't feel real to any of us

This art preview is getting me fucking pumped.

Still a bit cautious until I see it in motion, though. I'm really hoping they keep the same overall style.

I recall some of the most powerful moments from Hey Arnold were those very slow framerate moody bits, if anyone knows what I'm talking about. Always had that soft jazz in the background.

Fuck I need to re-watch this show. How well does it hold up?
>>
>>84674553
Look closely anon. He's still rockin' the flannel, the contrast just isn't as sharp.
>>
>>84675259
I didn't mean the shirt itself, i meant the way it was closed, under the shirt. (why would you wear an OPEN shirt under another shirt?)
they obviously changed it so it no longer looked like a skirt.

Steven Universe is not SJW pandering, it's literally Rebecca being given free reign, and she has a girlboner for lesbians and FEELINGS.

The show is the way it is because she wants to make it that way.

>>84676234
i wish more people understood this
by all means, worry about its unsettlingly problematic content, but don't see a conspiracy where there isn't one. it'll only distract you from the real conspiracy which is like, right over there.. behind that thing.

most of us are assuming that there's probably at least a couple months in universe between The Journal and TJM(it's not like Arnold can immediately drop everything to go running off to South America, show tends to be a bit more realistic in that regard), possibly even a year or two(would be a good way to explain any VA differences with the kids for one thing)

>>84675870
girls develop earlier, Arnold is going to be a really lucky guy, cause going off Miriam and Olga(not to mention Helga's "Cecile" look), Helga is going to be quite the stunner by the time puberty is done with her
>>
>>84674299
>>84674518
They use paper mostly for pencil tests and short animatics. Actual animation is made in Toonz on Cintiqs, digital ink all the way from model sheets to final cut.

>>84673710
It doesn't, at least not in cartoons. The last toon to be traditionally animated was EEnE, and only until season 4 - S4 used cel outlines and digital colour.

No, their storyboards are made in Photoshop.
Though with a show that has as many different boarders as SU may have some traditional pencil and paper storyboards around. Most behind-the-scenes show their storyboards being made in PS tho.

>>
>>84677604
HA was being re-aired here and there all this time.

And to prepare for this, it will be re-aired again, obviously.
>>
>>84677604
Pretty sure that's a big part of the target audience for this thing, to be honest.

This isn't for the kids of today, at least not solely. Nick hit it big when they started dedicating a block of time solely to 90s stuff, and it caused them to re-evaluate things.

I don't know if they expect this to be a huge hit. but it should be a decent success while satisfying fans of the series. There is always the off-chance that, oh shit, Hey Arnold blows up again, and then they probably have plans in place to revive the show fully somehow.

My guess, no.
It got five season, but it didn't really have wackiness, and overarching plot, merchandising or anything that drew attention to it. Just a straightforwards SOL.

It's kind of like an Ansel Adams picture. It doesn't grab your attention, but it's well done and nice to look at. Almost emotional.

It is a good show, that's my point. It wasn't flashy, and had a larger drama/humor ratio than most cartoons then or since. I think that's just had to market these days.

Hell, look at WOY which was flashy and had feelings, and it lasted two seasons. And that was with a great band writing the songs.
>>
>>84678272
sadly likely. what they don't understand is that brand is meaningless, what they should do is give craig bartlett a new cartoon
something new, something similar, something you can slap "From the makers of hey arnold" on it and THAT is how youll get your immediate views.
thankfully at least disney seems to get this, as they've given dan and swampy a new not-phineas-and-ferb-because-good-god-that-was-getting-old-but-it's-still-similar cartoon. which is what all creators should get when their show is kinda DONE

From the wiki on the show:
>Antonucci, an advocate of hand-drawn animation, wanted to ensure Ed, Edd n Eddy was produced in a way similar to cartoons from the 1940s to 1970s. As a result, the series was the last to use cel animation; the cels were shipped to Korea for creating the initial animation, and then later edited back at Antonucci's a.k.a. Cartoon studio.[1] The first four seasons were produced traditionally, though the series was forced to switch to digital ink and paint in 2004, starting with Ed, Edd n Eddy's Jingle Jingle Jangle.

helps that it takes place in a place with a new york feel. That place has been diverse since before that was even a thing.
it also helps that the black people arent all shuckin' and jivin', but there is still a small amount of the expected hiphop basketball cultural influence.. the asian girl does expectedly have a family that pressures her, and the jewish kid has jewish parents.. so like, cultural shit is spot on, but RACE isnt made a huge deal about.

The funny thing is Hey Arnold is kind of a SJW show with a SJW for the main character. Arnold literally could not keep his nose out of anybody's business and always feels compelled to help. It's the reason Gerald would call him Mother Theresa. If the show was on today Arnold probably would be standing up for any LGBT characters on the show or protesting police violence or something like that.

Not really hyped yet.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all happy for you guys that you finally got your fucking Jungle Movie. That's great.

Unfortunately, years of listening to Timbox and dozens of nostalgiafags on /co/ have made me feel kinda pissed at Hey Arnold. I never really was attracted to the series growing up, but from every poster in a 90s thread you'd think it was the second coming of Christ. Plus, Timbox posted rumors every other week that Hey Arnold was FINALLY coming back, or that a Nick crossover series was FINALLY in production, or TMS is FINALLY producing another season of Animaniacs, or the Virgin Mary will FINALLY cry tears of slime as Tiny Toon Adventures is uncancelled, Brittany Spears suddenly reverted to her 18-year-old self, The Simpsons become good again, Bruce Timm and Paul Dini fuse together to write all future DC media, and pre-9/11 Americana covers our faces like a plastic bag.

Well, whatever. Congrats for finally achieving closure with your show. Hope it's not Powerpuff Girls-tier, and I hope you don't let this go to your heads.
>>
>>84683738
first, there's a difference between a SJW and a bleeding heart. the latter doesn't go around LOOKING for people to TELL THEM they should feel bad, and then go attack others on their behalf.
secondly, arnold's not really a bleeding heart either. he just genuinely cares about people, and they come to HIM most of the time.
and fuck you for the rest of that.

> first, there's a difference between a SJW and a bleeding heart.

If you only approach it from the /co/ side of things sure, SJW are probably going to have a different definition of SJW than most people here.

> and they come to HIM most of the time.

He does butt in a lot from what I recall, especially where Eugene was involved to the point where Eugene thought he was the source of all his troubles.

When you see Hey Arnold as a kid , it's a comedy with some drama in it.
When you see it as an adult, it's a drama with a bit of comedy in it.
Craig fooled everyone and made an adult show that he sold as a kids show.

well more to the point, the comedy is pretty goddamn corny. at least the surface comedy, not picking up on the underlying ironic comedy

actually what turned me off most as a kid was the ugly art and the stupid fucking names. I was really sensitive to 'this is going to be a lot of childish pablum isn't it?' feelings back then.. so when the cast contains arnold, gerald, helga, eugene, and harold, i'm just like.. yeah no thanks. this show sounds like it smells like ham. and then basically everything about harold, looks and sounds, grated on me so hard i couldn't stand it.

Theres really no reason to assume TJM will go the same way PPG did.

TJM is being done by Craig Himself, and the idea for the movie is actually more than a decade old. Plus all the effort to get the old staff and VAs.

You can tell its gonna be good simply by how excited Craig is about the project. Hes clearly been wanting this as much as the fans did.

That's really common for kids who have parents who heap expectations on them. It's because they aren't achieving things of their own merit and desires, but because they're achieving things due to a desire to be loved by their family--they don't see 'love' as something they should inherently get from their family. Always trying to please some nebulous force that more often than not will never be satisfied no matter how good they do. So typically self-esteem issues develop.

And Olga is a pretty good example of that.

Holy shit I forgot how emotional this series is.
>>
>>84688465
Yeah. Much like Helga is tomboyish and forceful because of her neglect which resulted in her having so look out for herself, Olga was raised by being given attention and care for achieving nothing short of pefection, which means that when she fails to do so, she has a mental breakdown.

But whats truly mature about all of this is that the show doesnt really paint Bob and Miriam as villainous, bad parents. They both truly love Helga and Olga.

>offered 400 dollars for that baseball

>>
>>84688725
I dont think this applies at all. For all the shit he took from Nick, there was still 5 seasons of HA and a feature film. And it was his incredibly professional handling of the situation that made it possible for him to return to nick and do the movie.

I'm stoked to see this finally but my one question is how will they explain Arnold's parents not coming home.
Held prisoner by the bad guys or maybe even the Green Eyes so they don't reveal too much about them?
In a coma for years?
Felt they couldn't return because of ...reasons?
Dead?
>>
I wish this is what would happen to old cartoons instead of a reboot another movie, it would be cash.
>>
>>84689146
Stop blaming your parents for your life. Thats the mindset of a loser who cant take responsability for his own screwups.

Look at Helga. Sure she may have been the victim of neglect, but much of her unhappiness is completely her own fault. The nanny episode is a prime example of Helga actually being cared for and given attention, yet shes the one who throws it all away because shes afraid to let anyone close to her.

>>84689436
Your upbringing only cements you if you allow yourself to be trapped by it. Its incredibly alluring to blame your shortcomings on your parents and no doubt that they have their own share of blame, but all youre doing is running from the fact that youre the one screwing up. Youre never going to improve if you keep blaming them, because youre not going to be able to face yourself. You want a challenge, this is probably the biggest one youre ever going to face.

Im not gonna say that your life will magically improve once you get these feeling behind you. Im not gonna say that youre gonna get rich or fuck gorgeous women everyday due to a miraculous boost of self confidence. But you would have at the very least finally faced yourself and that will surely feel rewarding and fulfilling. At least youll never fall on the same pitfall ever again. Youre only a loser if you want to, because even the poorest of fucks can have a family and be happy. You may have your own regrets, but let those serve as motivation, rather than anchors.

So, take this piece of advice from me, if nothing else: Youre not alone in the world. People everywhere were victims of their upbringing, including me. Some people manage to bring their life around, and I believe that every person has the strenght to do so. Its never too late to find happiness, and people worse off than the both of us have managed to do it, so whats stopping us, if not ourselves?
>>

yes they do, also someone did a perfect little speech for Big Bob where he talks about how he's doing better than ever thanks to Cell Phones, and is even planning on entering the App market for maximum profit

>>84687368
honestly it's easier to list the bad episodes, and the only one that really comes to mind is that Iggy one that everyone hates, and the episode with Gerald's sister and the chocolate turtles, but in terms of favorites, Arnold's Valentine is definitely up towards the top("Cecile" Helga is best Helga)

>>84687780
>they did while phones still had less than perfect reliability but i think not so anymore..
actually it's less about reliability and more that Cell Phones can cause interference with Medical Equipment, while Beepers don't, so they do still see use(it's also why many hospitals have really crappy Cell reception)

>>84688966
yeah Big Bob might be kinda a jerk, but you can tell he actually does love Helga and Miriam

>>84689359

I work in a hospital. The only people who uses pagers are the housekeepers, everyone else uses crappy cell phones. Big Bob is not getting much pager business these days.

It is a bit like the traditionally-animated Rankin Bass segments, like https://youtu.be/9a8npoc5hwo?t=1m1s It's the line weight and the angles that do it. The handwriting is also similar.

That would've been an interesting turn of events actually.

It's been years since I watched the show, but I hope to rewatch it soon. Did Lila actually "like-like" Arnold? I remember that confusing me when I was a kid.
>>
>>84685248
I'm incredibly pleased with the look of everyone, I just hope the way they actually look in motion doesn't disappoint (nothing tweeny or anything).
>>
>>84688966
Miriam was basically a drunk when you realize it. She tends to forget stuff, speaks like she'
s drunk and does things wrong at times.
>>
>>84688667
They're both great in some similiar ways and some different ways. Both are great at having characters be just what they happen to be and not make "a very special episode" about race or gender all the time and they both know when to be quieter. I love both shows.

There's no need for hate here.
>>
>>84689082
They could've, but I think it works better with them not always in the spotlight. It showed how such complex and heavy things could exist just amongst people you knew. Making them the stars would risk it being more like a soap.
>>
>>84701246
Well, it all depends how it would have been handled, but I could definetely see a series with them. Maybe make it more adult oriented.
>>
>>84701462
>adult-oriented

That's another thing - one of HA's greatest strengths is it's subtlety.

confused korean animators that had no way to make her legs spread because her character model doesn't account for the existence of pelvis
See also HomestarRunner whenever he sits down, or when he wears a skintight outfit (as in "the Jack'em'up Kid") and suddenly the brothers chaps have to ask themselves how the fuck his legs work
>>
>>84707318
So, in other words... Phoebe has no panties on nor a vag, because they couldn't figure out how to animate her sweater? Just stretch out the sweater towards the legs. Is it that hard?
>>
>>84709453
Or just draw her pose differently.
>>
>>84709453
>Is it that hard?
yes, because sweaters don't work that way. they ride up.
and they were like "do we draw underwear?" and someone consulted their american culture guidebook and they were like "no, underwear is forbidden" so.. just as they did when pubic hair was forbidden, they left it out
>>
>>84709556
Storyboarders wouldn't like you changing their boards now would they? Animators aren't paid to edit or be creative
