It's too easy for the show to dismiss the ship like this--ESPECIALLY if they invoke the name of the actual ship! If anyone paid attention to the ending of that episode, it showed them hugging WITH THE SEA CAPTAIN STARING AT THEM.

I don't know if it was just new-ep hype but Mr. Candle Cares was really good. Liked the parallels to Blood Moon Ball, even with similar music (might be the same). Possibly new favorite episode.

Red Belt was okay. Comedy felt a little too tryhard in some parts and some jokes felt like they were spelling out the obvious, but it was cool for Marco to get his own episode.

Liked the continuity between the two segments (a Love Sentence sign is even in Star's locker in the first one), and how they're actually continuing the theme of Star trying to do things without magic. Was barely a subplot but it didn't really need that much focus either.

I'm also totally calling one of the Love Sentence guys being voiced by Patrick Stump and appearing in the upcoming episode called Starstruck.

Also Brittney either got fat or now has slight T&A going on. Seriously, look at her.

2 episodes in and I already think season 2 is going to be stronger overall than 1.

Okay so lets try this again!

Mr. Candle Cares, now that was a great freaking episode!

We got some really overdue development for Tom, also I love to have an ep set in ECA once again, Star's subplot didnt really feel intrussive and it was nice to see another convo between Star and her Mom.

I feel this episode will destroy a ton of headcanons! and give even more fuel to the Tomco shippers... With Tom being surprisingly reasonable and getting along Marco very fast and easily and also accepting when he "lost" with ease.

I can't BELIEVE they actually used the term "Starco", now all we need is someone to call them "Cute and Perfect" and we are all set. And while Starco was once again confirmed to be platonic and Star clearly didnt show any sign of having hidden feelings for Marco they still threw a bone to the shippers at the end with that "Point: Marco" moment. So you Starco fans can rest easy.

The pacing was good and the gags were for the most part on point.

It was so nice to see Ferg, Alph and Brittney in there too,

All in all loved the episode, I will post my thoughts on "Red Belt" in another post... unless the thread gets deleted as i post this that is!

Star is such a white girl, despite being a magical insectoid alien thing.

I fucking hate the lack of background music. It worked in the Ludo episode, but it made the rest of the episodes awkward as fuck to watch.

I said this in the discord but does anyone else feel that this season they are actively making it look like starco is not happening while at the same time confirming it?

I personally think it's brilliant the way Daron jerks us around but a second later makes us squeal like teenage girls and then back to jerking and so on and so forth.

Just finished both episodes, loved them both.
I liked that Marco messed with Tom and that Tom actually moved on in a sense. Well done, I guess the cuck jokes can finally come to an end.
I like Mister Candle too, that bit with him and Brittney was funny.
Red belt was really fun cause Marco got a chance to do his own thing. The dream sequence was pretty spooky looking too. I wonder what was up with that?
Marco's sensei was funny and the bit with Star and the hammer was goofy, I especially liked Mr. and Mrs. Diaz's parts in it.

Animation takes kind of a downturn in episode 5 because of an animation studio switch, but the writing and everything else remains the same. It improves again beginning with this new season.

Pretty funny, got some nice (if mostly indirect) starco teasing, got to see more of Star's relationship with her mother and her anxieties about being queen.

Tom wound up being a way more chill dude than I expected and it set it up for him to show up again in a less antagonistic role.

(Marco pulling off the infamous "smooch buddies" line just to piss off Tom was funny. I underestimated him.)

I dunno, apart from the dream sequence at the beginning it didn't really leave much of an impression on me? Star and the Diazes were really cute, but I just wasn't really invested in the main plot thread and I thought a lot of the jokes kinda fell flat.

I'm starting to dislike the direction of the show. They completely changed the energy of the show to be less cartoony attempting to cash in on how much people want a plot. I never cared much about the plot but I used to love the humor. The humor is all just drained to it's lowest common denominators.

However the second part of the dream warns him that if he embraces his relationship with Star, symbolized by the Blood Moon, he is going to lose all of his human friends.

I think they already had a plot in mind before it aired for us, to be fair, so I wouldn't quite call it pandering. Storm the Castle was recorded before anyone had seen a single episode, My New Wand/Ludo in the Wild (and probably these too) were being written and boarded when we'd only seen 1 or 2 episodes.

I like the new direction but can why it'd be offputting. Can't win 'em all I guess.

It really does remind me of a really fast shift to the same road Adventure Time went down, but that's a little unfair. I'd put this between Adventure Time and Steven Universe as far as trying to be plot driven goes. That might actually be better.
Hear me out, Marco is more dependable yes, but having Star as the weapon adds to the crazyness of the idea. Star's meant to learn how to control her magic because she's crazy with it, so making her actually be the magic/weapon adds to her having to learn how to better control with her powers, especially if she needs Marco to depend on her.
Makes for a better story aspect, plus it adds hilarity to their dynamic when working together.

wow, these new episodes kind of sucked.

What I liked about Star was the energy and enthusiasm of it. I forgave the first two episodes of S2 for being a little low key because I thought that they were just setting up season 2.
but these new episodes were just dull and I'm a little disturbed by how they actually acknowledged shipping

Now my impressions on Red Belt.

It was a good episode, not outstanding but not awful either, and it finally solves the mistery of why Marco is a green belt despite being such a capable fighter.

It was nice to see anotehr episode of Star and Marco on their own, I love the Starco chemistry and interaction but once in a while is nice to see them on their own independiently of each other. That said Star's subplot could been better, this was mostly a Marco episode with some star bits here and there.

The dream sequence at the start was probably the most appealing part of the episode, not that Marco interacting with Sensei was bad but it suffered from something I will explain in a bit, while the dream had a lot going on and was visually interesting

Okay there is one thing this episode made me think about: Quiet.

This episode was TOO QUIET! It barely had background music at all! if anything had some themes that would pass more as ambiance than music. Season 1 had great music and I am noticing Season 2 has a lot of long scenes with no music at all but this episode made it very obvious when even the fight scene against the tape store dude was completely devoid of background music.

I dont mind the show using scenes without music, but the season 1 soundtrack was one of the show's highlights, I hope it doesnt mean this season we wont get a comparable amount of great songs.

But overal I enjoyed the episode, and is great to see Marco as a red belt!

Tho is sad we are yet to see Janna at all this season...

More or less the same rating I'd give 1 two episodes in, though this season's more plotty and the beginning of the last was more episodic comedy.

I think it's actually doing a great job so far at what it's trying to do, continuing stuff set up in season 1 in a natural way and expanding the world of the show. The points taken away are actually for the same problems I had with a lot of 1: some jokes that don't work and bits that drag on to long.

Red Belt was, honestly, meh. It could've been much better. It lacked music. Though that may be a stylistic choice, it was one that they should've don't differently. Plus, it was rather dumb in a way. The sensei is a mama's boy, and some of the jokes seem....I don't know.....stupid for lack of a better word. It was not the best, but it's not a lobster Claws. 6.5/10

You know why were all disappointed? It's because we saw Ludo in the Wild last week, which was regarded as at least 8.5/10 to the entire fandom. Okay so I think the crazy Star in his dream is meant to be prophetic of the negative effects that the wand will have on her, or something similar. Notice the familiar green hue.

The moon is Blood Moon. It's possible to interpret it being the last object in the sky as meaning it's significance will eclipse the other people. Or that Marco and Star's connection will attract people to them.

The locker is broadly his fear of being stuck in his current situation. I do wonder though if the purple hearts are just reinforcing the metaphor or if it means something with regards to his relationship with star.

I must warn you that there is not much of a plot in the first S1. It's a complete monster-of-the-week series, with no 'epic' finale that breaks the format.

Part of it is that Dipper and Mabel had the same "serious guy + quirky girl" dynamic Star and Marco have. There is also that there weren't as many grills in the show to ship Dipper with when the show started off. Pacifica wasn't big at the time, and only loved by people who had fetish for oppai loli and mean girls. Wendy was kind of bland, although /ss/fags and redhairfags didn't mind, which just leaves Mabel.

I liked more the first two of the season but these were nice. I really liked to see Tom being so cool with all the situation. Nice development for him.

The second one, well, Marco is a red belt now. Nice. Also, wow, that dreaming sequence full of symbolism... that I didn't get that well of course. For me, it wasn't as good as the first one but I don't think it was a bad episode, either.

I thought Blood Moon Ball was way more obviously shippy to be honest. Main characters literally dancing under the "moon of lovers," Star giving Marco fuck-me eyes, even the sorta/flirty suggestive "now I know you can dance" bit.

Aside from the mention of the word "Starco" (which both characters referenced seemed pretty weirded out by), the most this episode hinted at a relationship between the two was Star and Marco hugging. Which happens like every other episode.

I wouldn't take from this that shipping bullshit is going to happen every week, especially since this one was actually pretty mild on that front compared to the one it's a sequel to.

I thought Blood Moon Ball was better because it was a great example of "show don't tell." Aside from the whole Moon of Lovers thing going on for the fans to freak over, it's obvious the characters themselves (at least Star and Marco) were treating their attitude about the matter with some more dignity and subtlety.

Tom's redemption was just kinda "I like Star"
"Me too"
"Let's stop fighting"

Blood Moon Ball revolved around Marco's extreme concerns as the safe kid mixed with him not fully realizing how much Star means to him (given it's also not too long after Mewberty.) Star's need to be trusted to do things on her own is also there, and Tom's finicky anger issues, in ten minutes, managed to make all of it bounce back and forth nicely.

Mr. Candle Cares was obviously super-character based but it somehow comes off more as a plot focused episode due to how none of anyone's personalities end up playing their roles with a sense of earned development or specific application. So the episode partially felt at odds with itself IMO. None of the characters' personalities really come into play that much so all the interaction is just... bland. The whole B-plot with Star was pointless too. You could've removed it and at worst you'd just lose the worst Star costume to date.

I would say the hiatus has been affecting my expectation too much but I also remembered the dropped storyboards. Those entertained me a lot and I read them a few times over, they still do. Maybe I'm just being narrow minded with my standards but at the same time in any case no matter how hard I try, I'm actually finding it difficult to compliment the plot side of this show. Particularly because it's taking itself so seriously when that was a regulated rarity of a blessing in a setting that made itself clear for a most part that it was gonna be antics.

Rebel Star is hot as hell and if you don't think so you're a fucking puss.

Not really the quality of the episode itself I was addressing, which I'll need more time to think about, so much as the question of whether the show's getting more ship-baiting. I just don't feel that the stuff in this episode was out of the ordinary or more extreme than it was in Blood Moon Ball (in that both are probably hinting at future Starco, but neither is going to lead to any immediate change in Star and Marco's current character dynamic).

Good post though; nice to see the show actually discussed around here. Though I personally wasn't a big fan of that storyboard test where Star says she'd rather have Tom doom the earth than go out with him, if that's the one you're referencing.

As for Starco, just the chances of there being SUPER HIDDEN FEELINGS ALREADY was shot down, it can still happen in the future tho, thats how I always saw it anyway, I was never in the camp that they had romantic feelings for each other already.

I am happy with Tom being actually very reasonable with Star not being into him anymore. I like him a bit now... not a lot... but a bit for sure!

First episode was ok, I liked the beginning the most. I feel like the confrontation between Marco and Tom could've gone better. The focus on "Star doing what she wants" was a weak ass tie in to the B plot and not the actual source of Toms issues.
Why does Tom even like Star? Is it because she's chaotic? Is it because he wants to have control over someone chaotic?

At the very least, point out that Tom would be better off just trying to genuinely be good for goodness sake - or accept that he's an evil demon and find someone who's cool with that.

You are probably right about the journal. It's something about Marco for sure, since that's the whole deal with "Marco ---> Dip down", but I never believed it to be something explicitly Starco, at least romatic-Starco.

This episode is still pretty huge on the shipping side, and Marco ignoring a pingpong match with his life on the line just to fondly reminisce about Star is something big, in my biased Starco book.
