His natural charisma was a big part of it. Ditko is kinda nuts and Kirby just never had much of a public presence.

Because when people came to the Marvel offices to interview someone they found Stan, who by all accounts is a very sociable and likable guy. So since they only talked to him they gave him credit. Lee's biggest crime is just that he didn't make it more clear to people outside of comics what the creative process was, people assumed as the writer he was coming up with everything and the artists where working from direct scripts

Kirby and the other artists worked form their studio at home and only came in to turn in pages and pick up checks because as work for hire contacts they didn't have a place in the office.

Marvel didn't have an artist officially on staff until John Romita Sr was appointed art director in 1973

Fair enough but by removing the specifics you're underplaying what a shit bag move he pulled.

When Marvel got bought out by a larger magazine / book publisher the publisher implemented the exact same compensation model they used for books which was essentially 90% goes to the writer and 10% goes to the illustrator. Any person who has even held a comic knows what a complete load of shit this is but Stan had no problem raking the cash in.

Martin Goodman was still Publisher at the time right? Goodman's actions while at Marvel made it clear he was a short sited and incompetent man. He treated his workers like they were replaceable and would cancel, or try to, titles on a hunch that no one would like them. Goodman tried his best to torpedo Spider-Man and actually managed to get The Incredible Hulk canceled because he had no faith in either title and didn't even wait for sales numbers to come in


That same new publisher also tried to get everyone to sign contracts forfeiting creative credit for all their work at Marvel, which was what made Kirby leave for DC
