Team up when?
>>
>>84527459
She's one of the few good legacy characters Marvel has going right now. A lot of her stuff even reminds me of Lee era Spidey. She has a distinctive personality and it's legit fun to see her interact with other characters. Her main problem is that, being a legacy, she teams up majority with other legacies that are way more shit then her. Also, she should end up with Nova instead of Miles since Miles is hardly a character.

By taking some of the burden of Spiderman's role as the young relatable hero maybe Parker will be allowed his marriage back.
I like her family dynamic.

As an auctual character though I don't know what to say compared to most of Marvel's current output she's incredible but honestly there's not a whole lot there but that's largly because she's still discovering herself.

Her fangirl nature should be really annoying but honestly I like it.

That's because when she was announced they hyped her up as the first Muslim superhero (not auctualy true) and up to then all marvels new minority characters were pretty shit this comic had all the signs of being horrible.

Then it came out and it was great the religion barely came up and when it did it was well writen, the story's were fun with some decent morals and the humor was pretty decent.

It's auctualy her brother that's the highly religious one a major theme of the comic is that everybody in her family has a difrent level of piety.

Lame teen self insert. She doesn't exhibit the self reflective contemplation or moral idealism that makes superheros interesting characters. There is no defining dichotomy within her psyche, the split between her civilian identity and heroic alter ego that brings about a transformation in her personality and body language like she's assuming a new persona when she becomes Ms. Marvel.

Without this kind of struggle with identity, she's lacking a great deal as character. I doubt she's even contemplated why she has chosen to appoint herself with such authority in society.

>>
>>84530501
You mean, she didn't start out just punching baddies and later writers did not have to deal with the outcomes and implications of such egotistically cathartic vigilantism?
Because Kamala is a moral idealist who holds herself to an ideal of categorical justice.
She does not really punch people if she can avoid it. And she does not resort to terror tactics so she doesn't have to compare herself to her foes.
Her foes are ideological rat catchers and criminal entrepreneurs, not madmen who inexplicably won't stay jailed.
So she really doesn't need to question herself in that regard. Her actions simply aren't questionable like that.

I really do think this aspect of superheroes is neglected in modern writing. The superhero persona of a character is supposed to be their idealistic vision that is brought into the world to fulfill acts that the character is unable to act out themselves, usually acting as some kind of authoritarian strongman figure beyond the institutions of authority in society, a figure of moral authority in an ideal sense.

Not every superhero is like this obviously, but I believe this structure of character building is the basis for what a superhero is in an archetypal sense. The characters superhero alter ego is like a metaphysical thoughtform, the actualization of their ideal self.

It's like Hamlet facing the ghost of his father, seeing reflected in him the perfect idealization of his own identity that he was failing to live up to, this valiant Warrior King who would have had the courage to confront his uncle and take the throne that was rightfully his. The superhero alter ego is what the character wished they could have been at their lowest moment.
>>

I wonder what DC characters she ships, or how she'd react to meeting them in a crossover.
>>
>>84530766

>>
>>84530731
It's the questionable aspects of vigilantism and superheroics, the questions of whether or not the character is a righteous hero or a delusional madman that makes them interesting to read. Vigilantism is inherently an act of claiming fascistic authority in ones society, and the characters ideals should reflect this in some way. There should be some degree of selfishness and egotism in their personality.

A person who appoints themselves as a superhero will in one way or anther understand themselves as being beyond common people and the people around them in the way they perceive the world. The question is if this understanding of themselves is correct or not.

You presume that there is only one way to hero.
But I say you don't have to stage a shakespearean tragedy around yourself. If you like that, read Batman. No problem. But you can't go and demand everyone to be Batman.
Let others read about heroes who don't brood over what they mean but define themselves as a community service, someone to stand up and defend their values and their town.

Didn't like it. Nobody says it, at least not that often but she's basically got the same powers as Elastiwoman. And I always think things like her bracelet stretching is really dumb. Plus when is a shapeshifter like a full on shapeshifter eve the main focus of a story. I think there's so much room to explore in that power set. BUT there's also something to seeing someon grow into there powers and gradually get stronger and figure things out, the Elastiwoman thing really does bug me though.

But in the face at least Mia just looks like or closer to Kamala... Maybe Janina Gavankar for an older Kamala?

I'm not asserting that other people shouldn't read this Ms. Marvel, I just came across this thread and decided to share my thoughts on the character and what I think defines the superhero archetype. I'm very passionate about the Heroic archetypes of story telling.

This idea of a community oriented hero versus a looming contemplative hero comes down to the Nietzschean concept of Master morality versus Slave morality, of Nobility and Commonality. The hero who is aligned with Master morality is a noble hero above common people, one who determines their own values without needing any approval but his own, one who creates values and levies judgement upon others. This is the Batman type of superhero who acts as the central figure of a tragedy that encompasses everyone around him and the whole world he lives in. It's from this sense of Master morality that they derive their authority.

The hero aligned with Slave morality, the common hero, has their values determined wholly by the masses of the community, by what offers utilitarian use in their service. Where the hero aligned with Master morality values nobility and strength, the hero aligned with Slave morality values what is weak and of the collective masses, and in fact comes to vilify strength and nobility. This Ms Marvel is aligned with Slave morality.

Essentially, Master morality is the act of creating your own beliefs, where Slave morality is having your beliefs shaped for you.

They've teased that she has some kind of problem with her family. Mental instability could be that problem. But really I just think it's a weird disassociation thing. Like she's in a pretty stressful unbelievable situation and she just ran with it. She kind of acts outlandish because she believes that's how people act in Marvel. She kills fairly easily because bad guys lives don't matter and so on. Plus she gets away with it fairly unscathed for the most part so there's nothing really to slap her out of it or even suggest that the way she goes about doing things isn't for the best.
>>
>>84531196
Or you look at it through the lens of Kantian morality and look at whose behavior would be more acceptable if it was made into law.
Then you have a society of disturbed psychopaths on the one hand, a liberal community of normal people standing up for one another in the other.
The question really is whether you want to read a tragedy.

Yes, the most pertinent matter in this discussion is what makes for more interesting story telling in the context of our individual tastes. I think it's obvious that I'm deeply engaged by tragedies. Tragedy is the soul of story telling, our means of reflections and contemplation in regards to human suffering. Superheroes are meant to bear the weight of some significant degree of human suffering and be the vehicle through which we understand it. While a community oriented hero might feel good to some, I personally want to see more than that from a hero in a story.

As far as which conception of morality would be more acceptable if made into law, I disagree with the inherent collectivist assertion of the idea you're proposing, that all of society would be adherent to a single personality type. What I'm talking about is said with the assumption of human irrationality and imperfection in all things.

I do my brooding over society myself, thank you.
Hence I seek levity and idealism in my entertainment so as to not lose myself to dark thoughts.
But I think you misunderstand the Kantian logic. It's not about building a society around your ideology, but about asking what a society acting the way you do would look like and whether that is acceptable to you.
If you hinge on being the exception, you surely have some good reason to question yourself.
This is not about implying everyone was the same, but about finding out what is a good idea by leading it to the logical extreme of common acceptance.
>>
>>84531509
This is assuming that common acceptance inherently defines what is a good idea, which is something I don't believe to be true. This line of thinking only serves to create false axioms from which people can only make misguided assertions. You're also speaking from an egalitarian perspective, which is something I also disagree with. You're suggesting that one should understand their own nature through the lens of social perception, putting collectivist values before their own.

As far as seeking pure levity from story telling, I personally see that as a form of cultural decline or degradation. Story telling, specifically tragedies, have always been our most poignant method of cathartically expressing our perceptions of human suffering, how we deal with this kind of existential despair.

She needed like 5 years of being mostly independent and building relationships with other characters. I don't even get it, is she being shipped with Miles or Sam right now? What about Bruno?

After getting her powers she turned from nerdy underdog who is wondering "if A-listers have days like this" into, well, fucking Avenger in no time.

I honestly don't mind Kamala. In fact, from what I've read, outside of Bendis, I rather enjoy her. I think that it's because she is a good legacy character, something which I love.

Also, the adventures she has, while wacky, do actually feel like that they could work in the pre-SJW Marvel. My biggest problem with her is ultimately the time she was released in. Because, buying her book make it's seem like enjoy a wacky Marvel.
>>
>>84530735
Well, while that would be AMAZING to read, didn´t Alan Moore kind of debunk that line of thought in Watchmen? I really don´t know, I have never read Watchmen and am only going one hear-say.
>>
>>84530735
I honestly think that this is why I enjoy characters like Cyclops and Hellion.

For with the two of them, when put into the hands of competent writers, there is a clash of identities. It is not a 'Bates vs Kid Miracleman' or anything as clear as that. Rather it's the clash between their identity as a man and a hero.

Both of those guys, I think, want to be the good guy. They want to be the two people who save the world and their reasons for it ultimately seem altruistic. However, because they live in the Marvel Universe, they keep having shit piled on them. And it's really interesting watching that clash as the two figure out where their priorities are. Whether they want to be heroes or they want to be normal people.

But, it's always subtext. I mean, Scott's entire thing as that he chooses between his emotions (The Man) and the right thing to do (The Hero). And as much as we like to go on about 'Rightclops', the simple fact is, we've seen what it has done for his life and it's not pretty. His desire to be good keeps sabotaging his relationship with his family and friends, something that Scott is well aware of. The big question is, how long can he go on like this and where is it going to take him.

Meanwhile, Hellion is total foil to Scott. Instead of logic, he is driven by emotions to become an 'ideal hero'. He does what he feels is right rather than what he knows is right. And like Scott, that drive sabotages his life. For, he 'reacts' to situations and that can lead him into a very dark place if he lets it. I mean, when he lost his hands, his emotions totally dominated him, leading to one of the greatest and most horrifying scenes that he has been involved in. But this means that like Scott, there is a huge question over Julian's head. It's whether he is a man, lashing out at everyone or whether he is a hero and has a firm code which he follows.
>>
>>84533635
I honestly think Bruno got side lined for the Trinity thing. Marvel just trying to cash in on her success to quickly and not giving it time to build. At least Champions has her removed from that but that should have been her first team instead of the Avengers. I agree she is getting too much love in universe with basically no one disliking her and Tony/Carol fighting over her. She needs time away from the Avengers and Carol especially since both have controlled her plot direction in the volume so far.
>>
>>84533635
This, this right here, i feel like she was a better character when she was just a superhero fangirl who happened to turn into a c lister and was still far away from avengers shenanigans

That's because it's not about being a super hero, it's about pushing Islamic propaganda.

She's great when you get over the fact that she's Islamic propaganda.

>inb4 /pol/
In the first fucking issue, they demonize the person who dares to suggest that Muslims don't treat women nicely, because obviously it's just evil propaganda made up by high school bullies.

You need to go back, /pol/
>>
>>84527459
I keep waiting for the comic were Punisher shits all over Islam and shows her how evil and sick her faith is.

Considering Mary Jane is working for stark now that's not that far fetched
>>
One of the only good progressive characters to come out of Marvel lately, mainly because she has a personality beyond vitriol and feminism quotes.
>>
>>84547810
I agree that bit was shitty but it had far more to do with that sort of attitude in general then Islam.
>>
>>84549522
You DO know how many Americans kill Americans every year, right? It's like ten thousand times what a couple dudes in ISIS gear can accomplish. And all that history of the US going in and messing up other countries, even killing off the natural Americans and dumping other foreign people here to work the fields, man the stuff about what a great nation we are, pure propaganda. Us Americans should be locked away and looked after.

She's how diversity in comics is supposed to be done. She didnt replace anybody, and her identity is uniquely her own with her persona being literally only an homage.

How is she doing popularity and sales wise? I'd like to think that she's one of the most popular pseudo-reboots that Marvel has done recently.

You'd think correctly.

If digital sales are so good why don't they publish the data?
>>
>>84564909
That's up to Comixology to publish the digital data not Marvel. We only even get physical sales because Diamond chooses to report them. Basically no comic companies actually report sales numbers themselves.

Ms Marvel was also Marvel's second best trade in normal bookstores after Civil War in 2015 (and we get those numbers from Nielsen's Bookscan info, again not the publishers). She genuinely performs well.
>>
>>84547810
I think you're missing the point

She's good DESPITE Islamic propaganda.

She's not a dispenser of it.
