I think you're mis-understanding me. His first wife was his consolation prize after the little red headed girl got married. He never loved her and of course that marriage eventually ended with him having an affair.

Have you watched Bojack Horseman? Think of Schulz as a much more successful Bojack. From all accounts Schulz was depressed and miserable, but for the most part it was he himself that caused his misery. He often talked about small slights that people did to him years and decades past, but when interviewers talk to the people they never remembered the slights they did to him.

I'm not complaining, mind you. It was Schulz's depression and idea that the world was out to get him that made Peanuts so great. A happy Schulz couldn't have made a character like Charlie Brown or Peppermint Patty. But it's important to separate the artist from their work.

My actual assumption is that Shulz had nobody to base them off of and the aspects of his personality they represented/were drawn from, faded away as she got older and more famous.

Early on in the strip they were a happy couple and Lucy and Charlie have a much more friendlier relationship. By 1969 Schulz had moved out of the house half a continent away to California, and by 72 they were divorced. Lucy from those strips on tends to antagonize Charlie Brown.

If you just look at the strips then it looks like for no reason Lucy becomes a cunt after being friendly with Charlie Brown when she's younger. If you look at his life you sort of understand Lucy's cuntishness.

Which one is the good advice? The "get friends" advice which Chuck knows, or her telling him he's too crabby (which isn't even Chuck around most people). And it's not like Chuck doesn't have friends. He's got Linus, Peppermint Patty, and Marcie. Probably a few more who are at least polite with him. Still a sad sack.

I think the biggest problem is that Charlie Brown's life is fine. Like he fails a lot and he's always depressed, but he also has things he's good at, many times unconsciously. But those aren't the things he loves. I mean through sheer effort he managed to win spelling bees up to the championship level and only fumbled on one softball word and managed to feel like garbage, despite beating out MANY MANY kids before him.Lucy's not much help either but he's not really helping himself by going to her in the first place.

That's not true at all. Like >>84570187 has said, the misery is all Charlie's fault. He's an amazing speller, punter/thrower, racer, marble shooter, and gets good grades. The issue is he can't look past all of that when he doesn't come in first place or makes on little mistake. It's probably why the kids treat him like shit because his negative outlook clearly grates on their nerves.

The thing with depressed people is they don't think they can beat it. It's a mental disorder that keeps you down in the dumps. People don't like being depressed, but they don't see a path to being happy. Especially if attempts to move past it are met with failure time and time again.

And she could do all that without charging money for quack advice. It's clear Lucy mainly does it for her own benefit rather than actually helping people.

The movies tend to pay homage to the originals, but towards the end of the strips life girls started wearing pants more often than skirts and dresses to fit in with the time. Peppermint patty and Marcy don't ever even wear a dress(except the one strip where PepPatty is forced to)
Also towards the end Lucy and Charlie Brown seem to be on better terms.
But yeah, Violet, Patty and definitely Shermy stop appearing in speaking/important roles sometime around the mid 80s.

That isn't exactly relevant. Charlie's issue for feeling like shit is that he can't do anything right and nothing works his way, when in reality only baseball and the kite seem to go wrong for him. He's even scored some points with the little red haired girl before. His issues are his own fault and if he'd stop psyching himself out he'd be much more successful with people as well.
