It's refreshing to see a young kid character who isn't egotistical, boring or 'quirky'. Also he has the largest balls of anyone in the Marvel universe.

Sam is an underdog, like a real underdog both in the comics and in the way he's treated by Marvel editorial.

Miles and Kamala are the current Marvel darlings and pet characters, every superhero loves and gets along with them, they get to join the main Avengers team in no time, Editorial pushes and advertises them, hell they are even going to get paired up. The only saving grace about that is that Kamala has a good writer and an actual personality

Not that Sam didn't get special treatment once upon a time, remember he was introduced in AvX and Thor right away asked him to join the Avengers, he was also inoffensively bland and characters would comment on how great he was. Once Loeb left it took Wells and Duggan to make the Sam we all know and love, the lovable strongheaded idiot with a heart of gold and who always took more than he could chew and the fact that he gets shat on and still strives to be a hero is what makes him really likeable.

In a way he's like a less cocky pre-Annihilation Richard Rider which in a way it's kind of what drew me in to the character.
