Greetings, /co/mrades! I had a realization a few days ago that there are a TON of bird-related comic characters. So tonight, we're going to kick off the first of many storytimes involving our fine, feathered friends and foes. There will be good (Dark Phoenix Saga), there will be bad (Hawk and Dove), and at some point, there WILL be Howard the Duck. Kicking it off, with a random selection based on the last number of this post, we have...
Hawk and Dove. Well, I did promise some stinkers.
>Can't all be winners.
The slogan of the New 52.
Is Hawk really popular enough to have a mirror version of himself? Usually it's only the A-listers who get that kind of treatment - Superman and Bizarro, Green Lantern and Sinestro, Flash and Reverse-Flash, Wonder Woman and Negative Wonder Woman... I mean, you don't see Hawkeye or Ms. Marvel dealing with evil versions of themselves.
Someone really should add that to the power set. I mean, flight IS kind of implied in the name.
Good thing she has a dead boyfriend for calling out warnings, it's not like that list of powers two pages ago included a danger sense.
There is a distinct lack of background here, Rob. Did you use it all up on the last page?
Well, we have badly filtered photos of famous paintings for background here, so... progress?
And we're back to solid colors and power effects for backgrounds.
Up next: Hawk beats on octogenarians!
Anybody reading, or was Hawk and Dove enough to scare off everyone?
What the hell is up with Dove's hair, here?
>Some judge named Hall pulled some major strings
Ah, nepotism. Also, this guy attacked the President, and he's being held in a DC police precinct?
You know, the police are gonna have to pay for that desk, Hank.
>My watch says
What watch?
>Can't breathe
>Mouth and nose clearly visible
"He got us into fights, which I TOTALLY hate now, so maybe we could just slack off on this one and let him die?"
Just... wat.
>You're gonna OWE me...
For doing your job as a superhero?
And the backgrounds have checked out again. War Realms, home of the gradient skies.
We couldn't have made her powers look a little less like the Care Bear Stare?
>"I love Deadman SO MUCH! We WILL save him!"
>"lol k, thx, bye dove"
Why... why is Robin calling out his moves?
So exits the lazily named villain/plot device "Necromancer", never to be seen again.
Generic speech time!
>"It's your fault he was trying to grope you, you were asking for it!"
>"How many men do you have to turn into lust-crazed monsters by dancing at a nightclub before you'll get better?!"
Wow, Liefield.
First "Necromancer", now "Hunter", who is TOTALLY not Kraven the Hunter.
Okay, seriously. Does Rob Liefield beat up his background artists or something? There is literally nothing here but Hawk, swords, and dialogue panels. And Hawk's dots, which look concerningly like fleas. Remember, people, parasites are a real concern for your animal-based heroes.
We're three pages into the issue and I still have no idea where the fuck we are.
Four pages...
Five pages, and maybe we're underground now?
Six pages, and it's less clear now than it was a page ago.
Seven pages. Perhaps we're in a weightless void in the War Realms?
Eight pages, and now I wish the dialogue had followed the backgrounds into the ether.
Nine pages. We have maybe a stone floor? Also, what the hell kind of eyepatch is that? It looks like someone drew a diamond in Photoshop and just filled inside with the paint bucket on black.
Ten pages, and now even the floor's gone AWOL.
Dove is muh pure as snow waifu but the art is just a but too liefieldian for my tastes
Eleven pages, and we actually have a passageway and stairs! Precious detail!
Twelve pages, and we have what might be a stone wall.
Thirteen pages.
Fourteen pages. I literally can't tell whether we're in a giant cave, an underground temple, or some dark room barely bigger than my garage.

Well, it IS Liefield. It's all Liefield, but this last issue is concentrated Liefield. Nothing but action shots.
Fifteen pages, and we have ruled out the weightless void, thanks to blood pools!
Sixteen pages in, and finally, we have some details in the background! Perspective! It's a monochromatic rock temple, but whatever, at least we know where we are now...
...just in time to never go back there again.
Given that Hawk still can't fly, that would appear to be a face-first dive at the pavement...

>Aim for the bushes
And thus ends The New 52 volume of Hawk and Dove. Deadman continued on with the Justice League Dark, Dove missed the days when Gail Simone could borrow her for the Birds of Prey, and Hawk pined for the days when he was a supervillain, and didn't have to make excuses for wanting to punch people.
Honestly, I was gonna call it here for tonight, but this was just a sad appetizer. Let's move onto a helping of Birds of Prey!
This is Birds of Prey, volume 1 - Chuck Dixon and a bunch of mini-series and one-shots.
I kinda miss Black Canary, car aficionado.
>Listen to me
>Play me
Ah, the pre-Internet world.
This is Babs' subtle way of saying you look like a crime-fighting hooker in the fishnets and leather jacket, Dinah.
And thus continues Dinah's epic string of horrible taste in men. Even Huntress has a hard time competing with some of these choices. Serial philanderers, corporate thieves, super-villains, Ra's al Ghul...
This is the debut of Black Canary's 90s costume, which was actually pretty solid, especially considering her 80s version.
If anybody's still reading, shout out! I'm too lazy to throw in a non-image thread bump.
Yet somehow, Dinah doesn't figure out Babs' secret identity for another 50-odd issues.
>return to sender
This was right around the time Oliver Queen died and Connor Hawke was introduced to take over for him.
Oh hey I never read this birds of prey storyline. I could have sworn the series started differently.

We're in the super-early era, before Dixon started in on the regular series in 1999. This story is from Showcase '96, and the first BoP story was a one-shot also in 1996. After that, there's a few more solo issues before becoming the regular series.

I still prefer fishnets but this is up there.
