Breaking my wrist over here with all this iterative drawing - but I'm getting noticeably better the more I keep this up. I'm hoping to do 28 sets of heads a day from front and side this month. That's about 800 heads of each this month; hopefully that's enough to help me polish my style up very fast.
>>
>>84398862
are youn only making front and profiles?
>>
>>84398926
I'll be switching it up each day with additional other tasks, yeah - but every day will have those heads as well.
>>
Going to spend the day coloring the last 4 pages of my current storyarc, but lately I've been trying to dust off some old stories and characters for convention purposes.
>>
>>84398963
hope you'r making also other angles because repeating the same pattern again and again without the concept of a tridimensional form can be become symbol drawing

Ah Anon, your studiousness is an inspiration. Keep at it!

Gotta second this guy: >>84399011

You'd probably be better off animating unique head rotations or something (so let them look up in the middle, down in the middle, lead with the top and then the bottom, maybe get a back view of a head turn).
>>
>>84399011
Well, yes, as I wrote: additional tasks. I also intend to try and improve my waists, hands, feet, arms, legs, and flexibility.

But even though I'll be also doing those things, I will every day commit to 28 front and side heads.

AEON, the Arcane, Esoteric, and Occult Neutralization force. In 1945, when it became clear that German Furor's research into the Occult was a legitimate threat after the sudden and suspicious death of FDR, the OSS reach out to the Allied forces to assemble a team and put a stop to it. With the assistance of the French DST, Brittan's MI5, and the Russian MGB, the Wehrmacht never got the boost from the Nazi magic.

Fast forward to the end of the war, the UN is established and the OSS, along with members from the aforementioned Intelligence Agencies got together and formed AEON, and with the alliance of various cults and covens of the world, we keep Magic out of the hands of dangerous people and out of any countries scientists and armed forces.

>The guys they're visiting are basically Normans, right?

Basically yes; I love the Norman Invasion or Anarchy-era knight, I was generally looking at 1100's and early 1200's equipment.

Like I said, I don't mind THAT much if a piece if equipment is too modern for the time period I'm basing it on. This comic's got a High Middle Ages civilization living RIGHT NEXT to an Iron Age Celtic civilization.

Something like the Nasal Helm was what I was initially going for but that left the squishy eyes too exposed. The Kettle Helm solves the exposed eyes problem so I COULD go for that; in that arc he has a helmet made to accommodate his cartoon frog face. Even if the Kettle Helm wasn't invented until the 1300's, they didn't have talking frog knight in the 1100's either.

>>84396119
You can do, Anon. We believe in you!
I'm planning to have em make a cameo during the "Scandinavian Folklore" story arc

>>84397705
Yeah; had I drawn him with a more "realistic" frog-face, the helmet would have been completely different. Alas, he's a VERY cartoony frog, so what his main concern would be to protect those eyes. Again, it'll depend on how much I decide practicality is important (which I tend to think is very important for characters who don't have magic powers)

Long time no see. It's hard to tell. I think I have at least 30 people giving a shit about my work. Almost certainly not yet 60 though.

Comicfury tells me I've got 29 subscribers, and I usually get 30-40 uniques on updates, so I figure there are about 35 consistent readers. I just need to grow that figure by a factor of twelve and I might be able to pay my caffeine addiction with the patreon moneys, ha ha.
I suppose I can't complain, since I've never bothered trying to attract readers. Figured I should have a product worth advertising first, and I'm having a hell of a time putting a proper website together. Probably just being a coward - if I actually get to the point of trying to tell the world, I might just discover that even if they knew about it they still wouldn't like it.
>>
>>84401984
Do you already have a patreon? My stats are in the same ballpark.
>>
>>84402073
Nah, I'm judging by the reported readership and Patreon income of various posters here. Also I can't into math, that should've said "by a factor of fifty". Oops.
>>
>>84400912
I have a little over 550 followers on my tumblr, and actual pages get about 35 to 80 notes each (updates with multiple pages tend to be in the 100 - 135 range.) I don't have any kind of tracking so I don't know how many "regulars" I have, but I'd guess about 30.
>>
>>84400912
I tend to have always a good 40-50.

They never comment, and they still check up even thought I said updates aren't coming until wednessday.

It's a little weird, but I'm cool with it.

>>
>>84400912

>>
>>84402775
Damn, dude. You deserve way more readers. I've got you linked on my site in a "comics we like" section of the about page but it only helps so much.
>>
>>84402945
Well like I said, I'm not complaining. It's my own dang fault for not marketing it.

I really appreciate that though man. I'd link you back, but, y'know, the whole "can't get around to doing a proper site". I've been meaning to add a link to The Green Knight since february.
>>
>>84400912
Really great, actually. Thanks to Reddit I broke multiple single-day records for my site yesterday and prior to that I had a very good surge in growth thanks to a cameo appearance in a more popular comic.

Things are looking up!
>>
I've always felt like 'fame can wait, i can be popular someday even after the comic is finished'
and now i'm just like... wait, can that happen? does that ever happen? it's not as much fun surely not being able to be part of the now, and anticipating updates with other fans
>>
>>84403439
You gotta accept you may never be popular at all... making has to be more than half of the reward.

>>

Looks cute and potentially interesting, but I think you could polish up your art/paneling.
It took me a while to realize the bird guy was looking towards the back seat because the background in that panel was so messy. Additionally, I think a panel showing bird dude stopping the car on the road could help improve clarity, because right now that last panel kinda comes out of nowhere.
>>
A few days ago I pitched a "webcomic" that was basically the story of humanity's First Contact with an alien intelligence told through a series of fake screenshots from various real life websites. In that time I've been developing the idea and would like some input.

First and foremost, I can't think of a good title. Right now all I'be got is "First Contact", which is kinda lame and shares an unfortunate similarity to an existing Star Trek movie. Any ideas?

Secondly I've been playing with different ideas for the aliens themselves.

The first idea is a species that shares a lot of surface similarities to humanity, morphologically and societally. Their most prosperous culture has a structure vaguely similar to democracy, there are rough parallels in terms of technology, entertainment, social structure, etc. one of the major differences is that their olfactory senses are much, MUCH more powerful than humans', which leaks into their culture and even language. Due to their advancements in technology (roughly 400 years ahead of our own), their main source of entertainment and global communication is something similar to the matrix; a sort of neurological virtual reality hook up where almost anything is possible called the "Dream". The Dream, however, is heavily regulated due to it's extremely addictive nature.

The second species is much less human. They are born into a strict caste system that has both morphological and social ramifications. Soldiers are born soldiers, workers are born workers, etc. they're also hermaphrodites, meaning any individual can get any other individual pregnant. As they evolved as herbivores, their society is very heavily agricultural, and wars are far less frequent. Parents do not raise their own young; once born, a child is raised by their community. Given that they evolved on a tidally locked planet, their main sensory organ detects infrared light, although they do have weak eyes that can see in the visible spectrum.

Thoughts?
>>
>>84404653
first contact / contact is totally overused, even star trek aside.
you should just make it something you can believably see the media adopting. something stupid like all the 'gates' and other bullshit they invent to sell clicks. some kind of dumb catchy abbreviation .. invayysion or something.

why would anyone with a matrix bother to explore other planets? i guess it would have to be regulated for them to bother doing anything else.
a heavily agriculturally-focused race would have even less excuse to visit other planets. and i take it you mean the DARK side of a tidally locked planet.
>>
>>84404653
>wars are far less frequent
How do you figure? Herbivores can be plenty aggressive, and they'd still have all the reasons humans have for waging wars. If you can't slaughter your livestock and eat 'em in a year with a bad harvest, your only option is to trade or fight for the neighboring tribes' harvest.
>>
>>84404797
Like I said, it's very heavily regulated to prevent society from imploding. You can only use it for a certain amount of time a day, so peoe still have jobs and lives outside of the Dream.

Both species, I've decided, have one thing in common: their technology has advanced to the point where they've essentially "cured" aging, so child-bearing is effectively outlawed, or at the very least, very heavily curbed. One of the reasons the aliens want to explore other planets is to colonize and expand, giving the underclass a right to have children. At a later point in the story, there will be an "arc" where the aliens try to negotiate a right to build small settlements on earth for exactly that purpose.
>>
>>84404961
Yeah, you're probably right. I'm not sure why I assumed herbivores would be less violent.
>>
>>84404653
The Matrix, even an addictive one, is done to death. Just to start.

If you want a fresh spin, make totally fabricated realities implausible and cartoonish. You want a "real" experience, you want something recorded by someone living that experience.

You can get weirder with this by allowing a "game" form where people "pilot" each other around the real world, with the vessels being compensated in cash.

Even if you don't do that, you can imagine what stars in this new media would do. Porn, crazy sport shit normal people can't do, snuff films (either as the killer or the victim).

And your messy complication could be the personalities of the recorders vaguely infecting those of the viewers. You associate the smell of mothballs with some bad shit that happened to you as a kid? Now so do fifty other people.

This would feed better into a story of alien contact. They crave our ersatz experiences, but reactionaries are against the memetic dilution of their own culture. In fact, you can totally forgo physical contact with the aliens able to offer fucked up compensations to people willing to live as entertainers. Physical upgrades or whatever.

Your social media attention whores would be ideal candidates to do fucked up shit for attention, and while the reader would only see our side of it, you'll have better opportunities for thematic parallelism.

I was thinking along the lines of calling the aliens "watchers" or "followers." Sounds like a cliche scifi alien name, but it's also sort of a social media thing.

"Life-casting" is good, but maybe emphasizes live broadcasting or streaming connotations and downplays the recorded and revisited bits. Which you might or might not want, depending on your handling.

Didn't see a sketchbook thread. Made some cat faces, I've been dealing with a strange art depression where drawing feels like a chore, now.

What does /co/ think of my little graphic design doodles on the left side?

Have a Tumblr if anyone wants it.

not exactly the right thread for it, but.. meh. the standing-up kitty is cute.
that's a sad kinda depression. why does it feel hard? because the results are certainly coming out.. and this is pencil so it doesn't look like you're wasting a lot.

Should have said "post your art" thread.

Made a thread on /ic/ a month ago. There are more responses I saved, but basically, I took a break for a while. Then I just felt like drawing kitties on night during my security guard shift. So I did.

It wasn't art block, for me... drawing just got tedious for me for a bit.

Managed to finish and properly scan this one. I changed the Werewolf head, but something still feels off.
I decided to keep the eyes simple so it doesn't contrast with his human form, but I think that's what's bugging me.

I'll try to find new alternatives in the future.

Heh, I've been working on doing the same for your but these past couple of months have been insane for me with job interviews and now preparing to go to the UK. I actually do feel guilty for not getting it done sooner after the help you gave me in writing the end of the first arc

You get about the same amount of views I get too, and I'm also TERRIBLE with Marketing. I used to get almost 200 with each update back when I was going back and forth between /hyw/, my site, and tumblr; but I haven't had the time to do ANYTHING for the latter.

Once I start this new job in the UK I hope my life will be a lot more stable and I'll be better able to balance work, social life, and comic.

Yesss! That's another thing that was bugging me. I wanted an IDGAF vibe with her, but that didn't come out very well. I can try again, why not.

As for the neck, I wanted to make him like he's cowering in fear, but that's another thing lost from brain to hand, so I can try to see if I can salvage it.

It's still a prototype cover, not final, but I want to iron all this shit while I can. Thanks a bunch!

his entire career is about criticizing how terrible the food is though

i keed i keed, i was talking about traditional cuisine, of which most foreign lands' is better than america's own, but of which britain's is lousy. their whole history has been 'conquering other countries to get some decent-tasting grub'. just making some generalizations.

Hey now, America invented barbecue and soul food.
>>
>>84410116
ah, black people food. this is an odd case. people at the time wouldn't have called it american, but it has become american over time. that whole melting pot thing, but happening at a time when certain parts of the pot would never admit the other parts were in the same pot.
funny though because a lot of aspects of it are found in a million other unrelated cultures just because of a similar situation of "Being poor as fuck, having to make do with trash ingredients"
in fact the same thing happened again later with cocktails, being invented for shitty booze

actually barbecue's even weirder, caribbean food adapted by basically anyone with contact with them, but still heavily associated with slave plantations because for a while it was inefficient to try to make without slaves to do the rotating and basting and all that.

and really if you didnt call that american all you'd be left with was the british, german, and dutch food the settlers brought with them.. some of which is okay but most of which is lousy.

5000 years ago, a few dozen angels decided to come down to earth to fuck a bunch of humans. Fast-forward to present day, there's still a bit of angel DNA in roughly 0.005% of the population. Now, when different strands of angel DNA meet, the child in their life will become more like an angel with powers and no rules against their use unlike the real angels. With the increase in interracial relations, these children are being born more frequently.

>Fantasy setting
>Everyone has medieval level tech except for a group known as "The Unbidden" who have advanced tech
>Behind the high walls of their city they remain isolated from the world with no one ever going in and no one coming out
>MC is a princess of a neighboring kingdom called Estrella
>On here 20th birthday her father, the king, disappears right before the Unbidden break their isolation and attack Estrella and conquering it with ease
>MC escapes and with the help of her bodyguard they search for her father and the truth behind the Unbidden

This really doesn't make sense to me.
Cities can't supply themselves with food, let alone the raw materials required for post-industrial technology.
Unless by "advanced tech" you mean stuff like "infinite energy and the ability to make food appear out of air", they'd need to trade with the outside world to get the things they need.
>>
>>84416636
That's kinda interesting but also not very detailed and rather classic. I assume your refined idea goes beyond what you posted though.
>>
>>84416657
Sneaky rascal.
>>
>>84416778
By "Advanced Tech" I mean like they found a stockpile of what I'd imagine our tech will look like in 50 years. As for the food thing I guess I didn't think of that. Maybe there can be sanctioned traders who are allowed to interact between them and the outside world?
>>84416791

>>
>>84416845
>Maybe there can be sanctioned traders who are allowed to interact between them and the outside world

Just have a big cathedral-like greenhouse in the city where all the food comes from.
>>
>>84416883
I'm currently world building. Basically all magic is the gift of angels and magic, like any other faction of science, is progressed through humans increasing understanding of it. Basically the angels came down to fuck shit up just to see what would happen. The humans cant do shit.
>>
>>84416887
could be neat. I also realized I never put thought into what the city itself would look like. I should probably get on that.
>>
>>84416931
>Basically the angels came down to fuck shit up just to see what would happen.
These are angels of God? If so, it seems unlikely they'd do anything "just to see what happens".
>>
>>84416845
Okay if they're not actually making new things, that reduces their requirements by a lot. What about fuel and ammo and energy? Can they make those themselves? Is everything solar powered? Did the stockpile include a geothermal-powered hydrogen cell factory that's the central pillar of their society?
What do they trade the outsiders in return for food?
It might be simpler if you make it a walled country, rather than a city. It would be a lot less improbable that they could be self-sufficient for so long, and if they were running out of resources like metals and fossil fuels that would explain why they're suddenly attacking.
>>
>>84416845
If you wanna lay down a setting, question yourself about details and how things work. I find it keeps things fresh and stimulates creativity.
>>
>>84416978
Originally I conceived them as self sustaining, though I do like the idea that they aren't anymore. I suppose they could trade precious materials.

as for the reason they attacked what I currently have is that hundreds of years ago when they found the stockpile they isolated themselves so that the dangerous tech wouldn't spread and they gave themselves the mantle of protecting it. They later discover that Estrella is sitting on top of an ancient nuclear weapons silo and attack so that they can keep them away from others. that being said I'm liking the idea they can't actually be self reliable and attacked for resources more and more.
>>
>>84416495

I had a question about line work. Program I use is good but lacks line pressure so the weight is always constant. Is it okay to switch between line sizes to improvise this? Especially on details where lines start getting cramped.
>>
>>84418915
Lack pressure with a tablet? What are you using?
>>
>>84418915
like its okay, but itll take a lot more work to do
>>
>>84418915
Definitely switch it up, especially to differentiate interior details from outlines. Try to be consistent, though. Have 3-5 different line weights and try to stick to them.
What program is that? Are you using a tablet? There are lots of free programs that do pressure sensitivity just fine.
>>
>>84418848
It was a freshman effort. I agree that the pacing was shit, and that this is a big deal for reader retention and so on. But I'm not really inclined to judge a guy too harshly for starting his first comic badly.

I'd be embarrassed as hell if somebody dug up my comics work out of high school. I did gamers-on-a-couch shit, but geared towards /tg/ stuff and with kind of newspapery humor.
>>
>>84418915
Even with pressure sensitivity, manually changing the line weight is still necessary to some degree when I draw. I see no reason why you shouldn't have varied line weights.

>Also where do you guys advertise your comic?
I've extensively advertised Miss Melee on Project Wonderful off and on since October of last year with generally excellent results; I would estimate 15-25% of our current readers came from paid advertising on Project Wonderful. I haven't used anything else for advertising but I've heard from other creators that advertising on Top Web Comics works pretty well. 4chan ads are $0.25 CPM so anyone with a bit of ad sense (rimshot) can see how those are generally not so great performers compared to other sources.

I haven't written a guide to advertising on Project Wonderful yet, but it really just boils down to picking a cost per click (CPC) that you're comfortable having, since clicks are the only thing that really matters when advertising your webcomic, and micro-manage your ads and/or automatic ad campaign to ensure you stay at or below that CPC.

I did write a guide on how to make a good ad though! (this is specifically about Project Wonderful ads but it applies to really any ad you make, regardless of which service you use).

I've slogged through weak beginnings when they gave me... almost any kind of other hook. Good art, a genre I'm into, whatever.

His art wasn't good enough that I desperately needed more of it, the genre was far and away not my thing, and if there was anything novel about the premise or structure of the story he didn't reach that point quickly enough for it to have any bearing on my decision.

And you know Dewd doesn't get his shit together in response to feedback. His progress over the course of years is negligible compared with anyone who puts any effort into study or practice.

This is nifty.

Your values are a bit washed out, and your line weights kind of uniform. You might want to work on that. I like the effort you're putting into backgrounds and the relative clarity of your paneling.

Yeah, let's have a little activity.
>In the hypothetical fighting game, what would be the alternate costumes for your character
>remember, they all need to look distinct enough from each other and the default costume that players won't get confused if they pick the same character and do a lot of crossing up
>but at the same time, it has to be obvious that it's the same character so that people who haven't unlocked the costume yet will still know which moves to expect
>and don't add anything that will obscure the character's moves too much in profile so the other player can't react as well
>And there's no budget for changing animations so you can't add anything that would make the character clip through themselves with their usual moveset, or that requires more rigging than a soft body modifier.

The art of his comic is actually good; but the story was okay and his character design was rather dull

You should be okay if you use a smaller brush for fine details (facial features, jewelry, objects/people in the distance, etc), and a bigger brush for stuff in the foreground or for outlines. I think you can make it work, I've seen it pulled off really well before. Even certain artstyles look good when the whole image is drawn with one line size. Gives you a sort of 'animation frame'-type look.

>>84418074
This is great. If it were me I'd put a bit of atmospheric perspective on the body, so that it's more clearly behind the head. But I mean it's pretty fucking obvious what's happening in the image. Good work dude.

>>84417897
Love your character design. They've got super recognizable silhouettes. Panel 5 is kind of awkward though. If you're going to put stepping SFX I'd recommend actually showing both feet, because right now I'm imagining him tapping his heel to make stepping sounds.

20 hours seems about the upper limit for me too, but like you it's hugely variable - I've had a few simple pages with lots of close-ups and few panels where it took just six-eight hours before I couldn't think of any way to improve them.

That doesn't count the first sketch of the page, though, so I guess that adds ½-1 hours of work per page.

For my own sanity, I try not to spend TOO long on it, so I average 14 hours.
4 hours of Pencils, 4 hours of Ink, 1-2 hours of Lettering, 4-5 hours of color.

Worst pages involve drawing lots of water.
>>
>>84420220
The flash-forward prologue was shit, but if you excuse the newbie exposition dump the start was simple but likable. Girl goes surfing, finds an ancient treasure, finds out she has superpowers.

It uses entire pages as if they were single panels, but that'd be excusable if there was a plot. The problem is that a metric fuckloads of inorganic exposition on the setting, people, history and powers is dumped on the reader's lap. The first real element of "conflict" is the protagonist and her friend being lured into watching another character's conflict at its climax with absolutely no context. And then the audience is supposed to buy that 2/3 of the antagonists are actually good people when they had no real character prior to yet another expo dump. And there are CONSTANT character introduction despite none of these characters fucking mattering. The mermaid and the red shark are the only two characters that matter, and yes even the protagonist doesn't matter because she's poorly defined and just serves to punch out a badguy with plot device superpowers. And even the conflict she's dragged into is uninteresting and ill-defined.

Basically, what started as a flawed but simple setup for a "bringing the group together" intro turns into an endless clusterfuck of exposition, battle scenes and hamhanded attempts at establishing character (no, having your protagonist come across a robot they liked as a kid, having a flashback, and then moving on is not effective) with a poorly defined conflict and flimsy excuses to exposition about the world and people's superpowers. It did NOT start that bad. Not at all.

I think the best Scribblehatch moments was when he was going on a big rant about how much a bunch of anti-free speech meanies the somethingawful comic book thread were being for making fun of his comic so I made a snide post about it in /hyw/, and he banned some random guy from the skype chat over it on a hunch and justified it by saying the guy started trouble anyway so it was probably him

Seeing scribblehatch get salty about people directly referencing the skype chat and trying to figure out who was talking about him was one of my favorite things to do back in the day

The wavy tipped speech bubbles bug me, but that might just be me. Here, I meant something like this. This is a really shitty rendition of it but I mostly just mean coloring your lines and making the colors a little more washed on the things in the background. It's to make the stuff in the foreground pop.

Atmospheric perspective is when the colors of something blend into the atmosphere more, because they're farther into the background. Think of how hills look really blue when they're far away. This can be pushed to extremes in artwork (like between objects that are really close together, like this lady's head & body) but still accentuate how there's a distance between them.

This is by no means law or anything, just a suggestion. And you could even push the lineweight on her legs & head even farther than you already have.

Uh. I guess I just roughly block in the colors on top of the more or less loose line sketch and go from there.
It's not a very structured process, so I jump back and forth a lot, often doing high-detail stuff that seems important in a panel before I do basic blocking in of colors. I don't know what impact that might have.

>Your linework is so , so clean, though. I'm impressed you can finish it in 4 hours.

Thanks, it was something I just got faster with practice. To give you an idea, most panels take me about 30 minutes to ink (of course, simpler panels like the first one can be done in 10-15 minutes). That BIG last panel took little over 2 hours.
Giving myself "time limits" really helped me become efficient with it.

>And 1-2 hours is a LONG time for lettering...why does it take you so much time?

This page has rather simple lettering so it was probably closer to 1 hour, but I often have onomatopoeia (I think "Splash" is the one I've used the most often), some characters have different work balloons, others times I have difficulty finding the right place for them... it'll depends but I guess I just want to make sure it looks nice

I had the exact same problem with it. I was fine with him introducing the frog-mermaid-princess early because but the fight scene with her dragged on for way too long considering she was a character we had yet to care for.

What killed it for me was the hooded girl with Ice powers. The comic's already got this super-powered protagonist who's been almost irrelevant to the main story, seems to focus on an Sharkmen vs. Frogmaids conflict from another dimension, a big masked villain with a quarterstaff has come to their world, and ON TOP OF ALL THAT it adds this girl with ice powers, telekinesis, and a light saber. It feels like three unrelated comics brought together into a single story

I guess that makes the title "CHAOS in the Tropics" fitting, but it's kind of a mess to read despite it's actually good art.
>>
>>84422235
constant character introduction? aside from ice girl and old man, i didn't see that
I dunno everything in chaos in the tropics feels like it's building up to something, it has only just started.. it has PERPETUALLY just started. aaand I'm okay with that. but it's something where you have to enjoy every aspect of it, because the rest of it probably isn't going to carry it.

Are there any important rules to drawing a character with pupilless eyes? Wearing a mask? Enraged? Using weather powers?
>>
>>84425714
That's terribly vague, anon. What do you mean? Are you having trouble drawing those things?
>>
>>84425128
No offense to Dewd, but whatever he's been trying these past few years hasn't yet gotten him to the point where he can recognize that he's given the focal character in a panel two left hands, so maybe he should discuss alternative management methods with his therapist.
>>
>>84425825
exactly my point. That's something none of us have ever had to 'try' to do. If that doesn't describe a learning disorder, I don't know what. Some kind of dysgraphia I guess?
But I've never been one of those people that throws pills at problems. You just have to slowly work your way up to normal, at a slower speed, hoping the same basic forces that make everyone else normal will work on you, eventually.
>>
>>84425825

>>
>>84425761

>>
>>84426144
I just like it as a superhero thing. Other than that there's no particular reason to do it unless someone's eyes literally glow because they're a robot or a gargoyle or something. So.. do your characters have a reason to have glowing eyes?
>>
>>84426007
Eh, I'm not going to speculate on Dewd's problem. I don't remember him posting any specifics on how he's trying to improve, so the only thing I can say is that it doesn't seem to be working for him.

>>84426056
I don't think anyone mentioned the two left hands, but someone did mention Angel having two arms in the last panel. Are you sure that's not what you're thinking of?
>>
>>84426327
it's more like in general his scattered brain has trouble remembering stuff like that. We did see a backwards hand the other day, but that's the kind of error he largely stopped making in the last year.
Then again I tend to forget little changes to my characters too. I have to leave myself notes.
>>
>>84426144
Hmm I'd say only to use that with glowing, like the other anon said, or some kind of superhero overcharge, or maybe for a horror effect of someone's eyes rolling all the way back into their head?

Mindcontrol usually looks better with grey eyes or "spaced out" looking eyes, sometimes with big pupils. I know that batman and spiderman have no pupils with masks on , but I guess that's more of a design choice than a RULE. For anything else, (like fierce anger) it's always more effective to use expressive pupils.

I've been kind of a method actor this weekend, since I more or less kidnapped my cousin's 5-year-old to observe him to get some authenticity into my child character. We watched BvS together, he didn't like it, but I did. Got me in a Batfleck mood, so decided to draw him delivering a line I wrote yesterday.

Anyway, what do you guys do, putting internet aside, to do research? You ever actually try some crazy things just to know how'd an actual person really react?
>>
>>84428467
I approve of your methods, good sir. though I remember my childhood more vividly than any other part of my life so there's no need to do that
most of the time i want my comic to feel like fiction, rather than reality, so sometimes i do 'research' by catching up on shows that came out at the right era, but that i never saw for whatever reason

Looking really nice. The chin does feel kinda short as the other anon noted though, also the left side of her face's temple looks nearly convex just due to how the shading is. Probably unintentional but figured I'd point it out. Last note is that the toes are a little weird because on one foot the toe is large and on the other it's nearly the same size as the rest.

Good work overall though - good forms, patterns, and highlights. Maybe consider using a thing line to seperate the collar out from the neck though, just to separate the shapes.

On my own front, gave the formulas I'm working on a whirl in 3D. There's a big disconnect between the rapidly maturing front view formula and the side view formula. I haven't found one yet that I like. I'm blindly developing them without reference at the moment; just doing a tweak each time until I find good angles and whatnot. So far, it's a massive improvement for 2 days' work.

>>84439658
It focused on the bird, the intention was clear - that's the bird our characters are flying on. The current panel is some two unrelated people in the foreground doing god knows what while the bird is a barely visible dot on the sky that takes only a little space in the panel. I think the fifth panel does a much better job at the composition (I think) you decided to go for in the fourth.
>>
>>84439727
I see what you mean. I changed the original panel 4 because it was too similar to what I eventually decided to have in panel 5 (soldiers marching, with the bird in the background) so I don't want to go back to it, but I can definitely change the composition so the bird is more in focus.

>>84442533
As ''fun'' as writing in the moment can be, I've noticed that the writing usually falls flat and lacks structure, subtlety and proper layers and foreshadowing.

Everything literally happens in the moment, and sometimes those moments could use some groundwork.. groundwork that could've been done with good planning and script.

But, if it works for you then obviously, do proceed. It'd be fun to see what you've been cooking.

So you're OK with willingly harming your comic?

Because that's what you're doing when you just go off the cuff with writing.

If I had done what you do and gone with the upcoming issue of my webcomic with the original script I wrote for it, which I wrote over a year ago at this point, it wouldn't even be half as good as what I've created with the changes I've made to it over the last few months. Going off of whatever was in my head was crap I did when I was making sprite comics in 8th grade, but now I've grown up and I realize that when you plan things out and work on them and give them time to percolate and spend many hours tweaking your writing, it can come out so much better than anything you could possibly think of off the cuff.

It's disrespecting your comic and disrespecting your readers to put that little thought into your comic that you don't even bother writing anything down.

That brings me to 88 attempts to figure out how to draw the head straight on. There's still some major flaws but it's starting to deliver reliable and decent results. >Willingly harm your comic

>off the cuff

Who said off the cuff? The writing is complete. The story fleshed out and slid. It's just in my head instead of written down.

>going off whatever was in my head was crap

Well some people's heads are better than others. Maybe you're just a dipshit and a poor writer.
>>
>>84444048
>It's just in my head instead of written down
Then it's not fleshed out. It could change at any moment.
>>
>>84444091
>if it's in your head it's not fleshed out

Maybe not in your head. In my head I can remember a script. And review and revise it as necessary.

Not everybody here is some low I.Q. autist with ADD.
>>
>>84444150
You think you remember it, but things can change and you won't even notice, because it doesn't exist in a physical state.
>>
>>84444179
Not that guy, but memorization isn't a hard skill to learn. In elementary school I could rattle off Psalms. Not like a few psalms; like the whole book word for word. 'Course it's been decades so I couldn't do it now. But something in outline format isn't hard at all.
>>
>>84444179
It's not like anybody's writing a novel. Comic book scripts just aren't that long or complicated to memorize.

Furthermore, you were just explaining that the strength of scripts lays in it's ability for revisions, now you're moving to goal posts to where they're set in stone. If a detail was so minor that even the writer doesn't remember, it probably isn't that important. If you are the sort of writer that forgets even big details, then yeah you probably better off writing out a script. For the rest of us it's wasted time when we could be drawing.

A long vertical column works really well with a medium where you scroll. It can hide the twist or punchline under the fold, for example.
>>
>>84441067

>>
>>84444436

>>
>>84444665
Looking straight ahead, the "tip" of your jawbone is lower than the "corners." It is totally possible to look up and give the viewer a straight-line view of the jawbone. This is part of why it's important to check your work against reference. Sometimes the way things actually look isn't the way you intuit they will.
>>
>>84444641
wait what does that have to do with that post? i don't disagree
>>84444695
yeah but only slightly. fuck, no wonder nobody ever draws the under-jaw area when people look up, i guess you don't have to after all
>>
>>84444715
Long vertical column comics often borrow a panel aspect ratio and some aesthetic conventions from film. They've got quite a bit in common with storyboarding.

comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=350217&no=31&weekday=tue

The chin/neck area isn't just a jawbone though. The flesh between the jawbone and throat often runs to a point in line with the chin, or below it (I think it tends to be lower the older someone is). So you'll get a view of this weird underside shit just from a profile view sometimes. Shit ain't intuitive.

Almost no one draws it because from the point of view of the viewer you will never see it, no one can lift their enough for it to be seen unless you're seeing it from a lower point than the head, I don't know if I'm clear
>>
>>84445307
well so you'd think, and yet people DO draw it sometimes, and they struggle with it. then they criticize other people for not doing so..

Start doing 3/4s views in your grinding. Anything at all where we can see two planes of the head. Your 3/4ths views here are pretty flat. You've got eyes almost touching ears on that redhead, for instance.

Check your work vs. reference if you aren't.

Love the neck. You might be able to push panel 2 by putting some shade under the brow, but it's not a must. Something seems off in p1, just in terms of the shape in lighting. In p2 the upper portion of the figure doesn't contrast well with its background. And the soft brush, chunky striated gradient, and muddy colors don't really help that background either.
>>
>>84446346
p3 has the weak contrast with the background. Not sure why I wrote p2 there.

The moron who has no work to show. He's just another anonymous coward hellbent on destroying decent, honest conversation.

That's the problem with 4chan. Anyone can say anything they want and not have to back it up. No reputations. No repercussions.

No remorse.

>>

Alright then, show your work.
>>
>>84446537
I just thought it would be interesting to see if his stance stems from the sort of comics he writes. Like if he favors short comics and that's why he can keep it all straight in his head.

Also, I feel like an extraordinary claim requires extraordinary proof. It's well established that loads of the best comic writers operate with a script, but I've never heard of one that claims to keep it all in his head.
>>
>>84446693
I've never posted my work when you chucklefucks get this way. Nothing productive ever comes from it. I don't agree with the guy but the argument usually comes from "If you're not good we don't have to listen." Which is bullshit.
>>
>>84446874
If you've ever been on /ic/, or seen Scribblehatch or Coldfusion post in these threads, you'd know why people are wary of having their opinions and preferences associated with their actual work.

Scripts being an industry standard for comics probably has as much to do with a tendency towards multi-partner collaborations as with anything.

Televised and animated comedy sometimes works with much looser writing, often leaning on actor improv or beginning the writing process with storyboards. For whatever that's worth.
>>
>>84446913
His argument was that not having a written-out script didn't detract from his comic.
If his comic turned out to be badly written, that would mean his claim was baseless. The quality of his writing was completely relevant to the discussion.
>>
>>84446991
That's not entirely correct. To really say whether using or eschewing a script had an impact on quality, we'd need to see that one person do both. If it was bones, no amount of scripting is going to make him not a retard.
>>
>>84446991
Don't pretend you wouldn't pick it apart even if it wasn't. That's how it always goes.

How did this shit even start? Someone got offended about the guy's personal process.
>>

>>

I think what you are doing is a faulty exercise. Practice 3/4 heads at eye level, looking up and looking down.
>>
>>84447265
i think that's step 2, and he's on step 1.
>>
>>84446537
I'm not in the discussion, but "show us your work" is a very legitimate question on its own. The only case in which it doesn't make any sense is anonymous image boards, where people probably want to stay anonymous...
>>
>>84446874
>extraordinary claims

kek
>>
>>84447309
Remember when Coldfusion told Scandy that pros shouldn't iterate? It doesn't take us knowing CF and his shitty opinions to see that he's wrong here.

It's one thing if someone asks for help with something technical. Then you really do need to see their work. But if we're making cases about the general, well, that's different. A single excellent unscripted comic doesn't really prove or disprove the rule, and a poor writer is going to write a poor comic regardless of format chosen.
>>
>>84444593
>>84446502
>>84446693
it's because the other person will invariably call your work shit regardless of it's actual quality, because that way they automatically win the argument and feel better about themselves.
>>
>>84447270
Yep. I need a reliable model of the front and the side view of the head before I move on to trying to get them to work together.

No sense in trying to put the systems together before I've got a firm grasp on how each works. Once I know each, I ought to be able to draw the head at any angle with this method. Granted, I already know how to do so - but only with a very slow method that requires a whole lot of line making; this method is more landmark based, which should be more useful since I won't be drawing just human faces.
>>
I need an opinion.

I'm trying to get my character's details, personalities, etc. written down and I was wondering something. The villain in my setting really hates Seers believing them to be an affront to humanity. Would him intentionally blinding them be a good, poetic way he lashes out at them?
>>
>>84447681
Really, you should start by drawing cubes at various angles in perspective. Proportions are nothing if you can't sell the illusion of a solid object in space.
>>
>>84447651
Then people shouldn't discuss on public forums in the first place. In context, it's legitimate.
>>
>>84447696
Does it stop them from seer-ing? 'Cause otherwise, it seems kind of silly.
>>
>>84447057
True, if it was a bad comic, it could be bad for any number of reasons, and if ti was good, it might have been better if he'd bothered typing out a script first. Still, it would be better than no evidence one way or another.

>>84447064
Nah. I'm a third party without any stake in the matter, but you can't expect me to be convinced when I've got one guy's word on one side and on the other my own personal experience along with every other writer whose opinion I've read or discussed it with in person.

>>84447154

Depends on why he hates them. He could make them go insane when they attempt it as an alternative for instance - or be able to visit them in their dreams/nightmares.

>>84447729
Though there are proportions in this method, it's not entirely based on proportions. The method I used to use is entirely based on proportions and nothing really relates to anything else other than the base shape.

I can draw perspective cubes just fine.
>>
>>84447696

>>

what?
>>
>>84447971
As it applies to art, iteration is the process of trying and testing many things, going through revisions, and so on.
>>

yes

Just to show the differences in the approaches. This new method takes a lot less work and requires a lot less erasing - even though it's not near as structurally sound.
>>
>>84448001
nobody in this thread has ever said that a pro doesn't have to do that
for one thing, they would have to spend ages defining what they meant. it's a lot more likely that you misunderstood, than it is that someone actually brought up the concept of iterative design in one of these threads, negatively or otherwise
>>
>>84448081
yeah it sucks, I don't generally approve of people rewording themselves to dodge how idiots talk (that basically means they win), but in this case you've got to at least provide framing.

how many hours a day do you guys draw? I've only been doing 3 but I'm trying to up it to 5 or 6.

>>84448374

Hi, coldfusion.

Fucking everybody knows what iterate means.

I was there; you're not going to convince me you didn't say that shit. Everyone else knows you're a fucking retard; you're not going to convince them either.
>>
>>84448321
Anon, your grinding is admirable, but I think it would benefit you more if you tried drawing a variety of faces with different expressions at varying angles. Right now you're only learning how to draw one straight faced man from head on when you need to convey so much more than that for a comic.
>>
>>84449044
Usually on fundamentals. Maybe about 30-40 minutes drawing stuff from life like my hands. Then maybe an hour or two practicing from Scott Robertson's book, then I'll do some anatomy studies from Hampton's book for another hour or two. Then usually if I still feel like drawing I'll try animating for another hour. I'm on summer vacation so I'm trying to make use of all my free time. I'm not that good so I wanna improve as much as I can by the end of summer.
>>
>>84449148
All the faces you see on the page are all built off that same formula. I'm not 'grinding' on it - I'm making iterations on the formula, constantly adjusting and prodding it to see what I can do to make it better.

That's why I'm using the same face in those head shots - only way to ensure that I'm working and adjusting the formula rather than focusing on fixing bad character design decisions. I'm doing the different faces at different angles on the not-28-heads-a-day because my focus right now isn't so much on variety as it is on confidence and structure.
