I know /co/ doesn't seem to care much for Illumination's movies. I find them cheesy as well. But this is an amazing streak, and they achieved this with movies that cost under $80M to make. Disney can't do this, Pixar can't do this, and Dreamworks sold out to to Comcast because of this.

We may be entering a stage in 3D animation where it doesn't mean much to be a technology leader anymore.

Pretty much this, I also saw it. The first ten minutes, where it's literally just cute animals being cute, are by far the best part. Once the plot kicks in, it's an erratic mess that completely changes course at least four times and ultimately amounts to nothing but fastpaced fluff. I honestly would take any of the Minions movies over this, at least they're tonally consistent and have funny parts. (Pets doesn't even try to be funny, it just goes for cute)

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't funny either. Beat for beat, it's just Toy Story with pets. I actually struggled to remember any of the characters' names. I'll probably forget about this movie very soon.

I don't know if I would call this outsourcing. Illumination is American in name only, and all of their films were produced in France. From the director on down to the animator, they're all French.

Parent's are paying for something that will occupy their children for an hour and a half, and Minions delivered that. Not offending their intelligence, like the better Pixar movies, is entirely optional.

When I went to see Finding Dory a trailer for this came on. I had no idea it was for this movie until the very end because it looked absolutely nothing like the other trailer I'd seen with all the pets just hanging out at home doing stuff. There was a bunny breaking out of jail and some sort of secret animal cult club. Between the two trailers the movie seems all over the place.
