Is anyone else NOT triggered by this and actually interested in picking it up to see where Bendis will take it?

I admit I'm looking forward to it as long as they give her an engaging story.
>>
>>84393646
I thought it was just another person in an ironman suit.

Like an Ironman version of Batman inc
>>
I'm looking foward to it IF it has a good artist and not Deodato. I'll be happy if it's Marquez.
>That afro

I guess Bendis writes teenagers well enough too. But mostly my dick is screaming YES.
>>

>>
>as long as they give her an engaging story.
Will take 5 issues to get interesting, will get forced into events that will ruin her story when it gets good, will be approved by multidimensional Iron Men including Robert Downey Jr himself to prove she's great,
I want Riri to be so good, but man... I don't have much hope.
>>
It will be as engaging and long lasting as Steel's niece

Solo book about an awkward teenager is the kind of thing he can write well.
>>

Yes.

>and actually interested in picking it up to see where Bendis will take it?

No. Maybe if it was someone else writing it.
>>
>>84393687
I thought it as well, then I read Miles.
I really want to like Miles' book, man. He's no U. Peter but so many broken promises.
>>
Why are these creator's so incapable of creating new characters instead of piggybacking off of existing heroes?
>>
We've already seen where Bendis is going to take it. He's going to be too afraid to take risks or to do anything because he literally cries at the thought of making black role models for his kids.

Best case scenario is we get a somewhat usable character in 5 years, and some rule 34.

It's pretty stupid to be triggered about it though.

I kinda want to steal the character and write her myself.
Inexperienced teen with high hopes on helping people, with Tony's wit as he himself mentors her. Piloting a miniature Gundam, getting to know Kamala, Robbie and Miles at some points.
>>
>>84393646

I'm not triggered but I'm not picking it up either
>>
>>84393646
I hope she's well-written and interesting enough that she can find a place with a non-Iron Man identity.
I still don't care about Bendis' Iron Man enough to bother reading it.
>>
>Bendis
>engaging story
There's your problem.

If it was a good writer doing the series, I'd probably be interested.
>>
>>84393736
That... sounds pretty fun, actually.
Fuck you for making me inevitably disappointed in whatever Bendis shits out.
>>
>>84393725
>Why are these creator's so incapable of creating new characters instead of piggybacking off of existing heroes?
Because the Big Two still treats creators like they did with Alan Moore. So any new IPs go unpaid and unrewarded. It's better to recycle these stale ideas while the real good ideas are published at Image or other publisher that lets the authors keep the rights.
And if you wonder about Kamala, Marvel created the basic idea based on the suggesting of an editor and then hired Wilson to write the comic.

Same guy. I'd add a little rebel side too, to separate her from the goody two shoes that is every other marvel teenager. Not rebel in the sense of "mom you don't understand", but often disobeying direct orders or going to some extremes to save the situation. Being a little risky, put herself in direct danger because if she believes there's a posibility of not fucking up she'll bet on it. I want to make that Riri.
>>
>>84393787
Good luck doing that without making her an annoying twat.
>>
>>84393774

Bendis is going to use this as the reason for her name thinking he's fucking clever, I just know it
>>

I have some issues with it, mainly:
>Why not just bring back Rhodes' niece
>Why is she replacing Iron Man and not taking up the mantle of War Machine which is open right now
>How does her hair fit in that tiny helmet
But the only thing that comes close to triggering me is that Bendis is in charge
>>

>>84393871

This
I do not get it
>>
>>84393871
>Why not just bring back Rhodes' niece
Bendis will. She'll come back from the dead to see the new girl basically solo her previous archenemy (also back from the dead), tell the new girl she's totally legitimate and awesome and amazing, then take a bus out of state with her uncle before the universe is destroyed and then not recreated because Reed was too lazy
>Why is she replacing Iron Man and not taking up the mantle of War Machine which is open right now
Because War Machine is more guns and missiles and Ironman can be tweaked for electricity powers
>How does her hair fit in that tiny helmet
It venomblasts space until space gives up and lets her do what she wants
>>
>>84393646

Honestly, if this was written by someone other than Bendis, I would actually be pretty curious about this.

But Bendis has spent the last year slowly gutting Miles of every shred of potential he had, and I expect him to do exactly the same with Ruri.

I'd be interested if this wasn't written by Bendis, to be honest.

Like other people here said, I'm not against the character, but I don't really trust Bendis to be able to do a good work on it

On a secondary note, was it explicitly confirmed that she will be Iron Man?
Couldn't it be that they'll keep the name of the ongoing the same to boost the sales on name recognization while calling Riri Iron Girl or something like that?
>>
>>84393944

He's not allowed to have anything interesting happen to him, basically. His supporting cast was gutted except for Ganke (who I'm not giving amazing chances), and his stories are as milquetoast as they can humanly be. Where Kamala has family dynamics and funny moments and genuine heroics and moments of humanity and doubt, Miles has "um"s and venom blasts.

I mean, come on. Miles was a PERFECT story seed. New kid stepping into some enormously big shoes after Ultimate Peter got the love of the public. Struggling on multiple fronts: asserting his new identity, balancing a full personal life with the heroic life, ghosts of the past coming for him. Eventually coming into his own and truly becoming Spider-man in the eyes of the world - not a shadow of Peter, but his own man.

And instead he just became a vacuous Bendis mannequin. Before you ask, yes, I mad.

This is the attitude I had when Kamala Khan was announced, but at least her creative team gave the impression there was some genuine heart behind it.

Even ignoring the fact that Bendis's writing has been insufferable for years, nothing I've heard has indicated that she's anything more than a Poochie-style HIP NEW HOTNESS FOR TODAY'S KIDZ character.

>>
>>84393736
Seriously, /co/ eats that kind of shit up when they don't do things like, "Oh, they're taking over for an existing popular character." I understand some people's frustrations, but you have to understand why Marvel is doing stunts like this instead of just creating new characters. Back during the earlier days of comics, copyright wasn't what it is today and the company got full creative control and rights to these IPs, but now things have changed and while it's great for writers since they get a cut of what they created, it makes comic publishes extremely hesitant to create wholly new characters and IPs.

>>
>>84395399
This is extremely important. They don't want to have to sign some percentage deal for a character in the chance it blows up and they just kissed away tens millions. They can just take your character/idea put it in a costume they have in the Marvel/DC closet already, and give you a one-time paycheck for your contracted work.

Her book will be shit until bendis is kicked off it or gets bored and moves onto something else. There will be no engaging story. If you're lucky there won't be much in the way of "I'M BLACK Y'ALL!" knowing marvel's current attempt to get sales via signal boosting from a media that will endlessly praise them for the 'bravery' of having a 15 year old that looks like a blaxploitation character I don't think much effort will be put into an engaging story.
She's a teenage cape character so once the marketing dazzle wears off she'll get forgotten for 5 years and then likely tossed in the meat grinder with all the other teen heroes so the next bout of fan fiction writers will have a clean slate.

They may as well support it. Any representation is better than none, so if you wanna get good representation, sometimes you have to support a few shit books/movies before you can get the good stuff.

No.

Not triggered, but I see right through it. It's just pandering. If they actually gave a shit, they would have put forward the effort to actually create a new black character instead of piggybacking off the success of white characters. This is just for money and attention.

I don't like what Marvel is doing.

They always replace all their white dude heroes with either not-white or not-dude heroes (and sometimes both!), but then later on they always start up another series with the white dude and then they have two (or more!) of them running around.

There should only be one of each super hero. Either replace your white dudes completely or don't do it at all, Marvel. Man up.

(or make the new character something else once white dude is back)

i have no problem with the character bendis is the issue. It'd take him 20 issues to write himself out of a paper bag let alone write it well.

I mean..

If someone is upset about her then they should be upset about this too.

Doom is awesome mind you but he isn't Iron Man

Falcon taking the mantle from Cap was alright in my book considering their relationship. Kamala is alright since MM took on a new name and is still her own thing.

I have no real issues with the OP but I do look forward to seeing what they do with it and pic related.

Image if Tony "dies" and becomes her AI.

It's already been posted it's easier to just replace someone a character with another rather than make an entirely new IP. They can also just say "it's in one of the alternate universes so it doesn't matter."

Taking mantle is a pretty absurd concept. It's like after George Patton died some colonel would come forward and announce "I'm George Patton now"

And few months later George Patton would rise from the dead anyway.

I'd be more interested in it if she were a sidekick to Iron Man, like a Robin to Batman sort of deal, instead of being the new Iron Man.
Some young kid with potential he decided to take under his wing for whatever reason.
He'd teach and encourage her, but wouldn't give her his armor or let her follow him into battle. Eventually she'd make her own armor, which would prove to him she was ready to accompanying him on hero stuff. Her armor would be slightly shitter than his, but still pretty functional.

I get that this is probably the only way they will get to tell the stories they want to tell by using a recognized character like tony stark and then swapping him for this riri williams character, but they aren't trying to write anything new, not even close to trying anything like that, they just want their character "types' to get the spot light.
>>
I'm looking forward to what other, much more talented writers will do with his OC. I don't care enough about Ironman to actually buy this l, but I'll read the first few issues via storytimes
>>
>>84393646
It's Bendis, so no.

HOWEVER. I will admit, I think a child prodigy is the perfect legacy for Iron Man, and that Iron Man is the perfect character to justify a legacy. All of human history has been building on the shoulders of those who came before. Even if Tony SuperSpecial Husbando Stark was going to stay the smartestest man in the world forevers and evers, technology advances and the next generation builds on it.

Plus, Tony has pretty much entirely played out every aspect of his origin. His ditched his original capitalist war profiteer aspect, tried being the science savior of the world (any day now those arc reactors are going to make energy free and the economic benefit will totally trickle down to everyone), etc. He doesn't even feel any real guilt over it anymore, which is fine, I like that he was just "Okay, selling superweapons to assholes was a bad idea in retrospect, I'm going to stop that." No angst. But even Reed manages to hold onto some interesting character elements by feeling guilty over the F4's original accident.

For Tony to be engaging at this point, it mostly requires either an outright gimmick (Superior Iron Man) or for him to be the cause of conflict (every single event in the main Marvel earth books in the past 6 years). It's like the Superman problem, except Superman can still be interesting when you introduce him to new characters and see how he reacts to them and how they react to him. If nothing else, meeting Superman is a litmus test of new characters akin to asking someone if they're an Elvis fan or a Beatles fan. Tony it's more like "How BIG of an asshole do you feel Stark is?"

Anyway, race, name, gender I don't care much about. I'd be interested IF Riri ends up struggling with youthful activism vs the sorts of moral and ethical scientific and commercial compromises Tony had to deal with to get where he was. Like a business oriented version of Prez, maybe.
>>
Bendis doesnt take things beyond the headline. He helps Marvel shock and then it goes flat/forgotten until he uses someone elses idea and sparks the next one.

Bendis sucks and his editors dont edit. He does whatever he wants, including making swiss cheese out of continuity.
>>
>>84393646
I didn’t give a shit about his Tony Stark as Iron Man comic so I am less interested in this and how he will butcher Doom.

So the answer is No.
>>
>>84400397
continued/concluded because I am apparently a dirty blogger when I get rolling:

HOWEVER, if they just make her 'cool hip Iron Man without all the baggage he doesn't even deal with anymore' which is more of what I expect, or mere lip service to the differences in viewpoint (THIS Iron Man is totally on the right side in Civil War III! Despite no noteworthy story arcs or even Bendis-speak discussions of morality to set it up), I expect it will be shit.

>>84398965
Not at all what I was complaining about.

I'm perfectly fine with legacy characters, in fact I like them and I like that the legacy is often passed on to women or minorities,

what I don't like is that they always have to bring back the original, and then keep both.

Like I said, they should either have the original guy stay dead/retired/whatever, or have him come back and have the legacy character change their name.
>>
>>84400397
>I will admit, I think a child prodigy is the perfect legacy for Iron Man

Yeah, conceptually nothing about a child prodigy replacing Tony is really a problem.

What I don't get though is why we didn't just use Rhody's neice since she was a hip young black child prodigy that was introduced only like, two years ago.

I think it's fine. I'd rather they try to bring new blood in to create new icons to replace the previous gen. There's a limit to how many new stories one can create with the same characters.

The reason is because we wouldn't put up with /pol/'s attempt to spread their cancer in every board so they shitposted their /co/mblr meme around to turn the other boards against us, thus inviting a constant flood of shitposting that has pretty much destroyed the board since.

But hey, keep on being part of the problem. God forbid /co/ becomes a place to talk about comics again and not just shitposting, racebaiting, tv/movies, and stale memes.

It's even more sad and pathetic that you probably legitimately believe this. Don't be obtuse.

Nobody is saying there's a problem, it's just that whining that it's all /v/'s fault, or all /tv/'s fault, or all /pol/'s fault, or whoever you choose for this month's convenient scapegoat, is both pathetic and unconstructive.

The problem is with /co/, not with some external malefactor trying to corrupt our poor, innocent board. We wouldn't be /co/mbler in the first place if we didn't talk more often about gender politics than fucking Goobergate does.
