>>
Heard about it from a tumblr user who wasn't (very) cancerous. I saw a little bit of it, and from what I did see I liked it.
>>
I watched it as a kid.
Recently I discovered the comics and they are pretty cute, yet more mature than you would except.
On the other hand, it's finnish, so stories about drunk relatives crashing at your place might not be too adult in that context.

Annnddd I'm out of Moomin art, both harvested and my own.
>>
>>84368944
>implying you can truly be friends with someone that has Snufkin's personality

Nigga just shows up and hangs around with Moomin when the weather is nice. When Moomin asks if he can go south with him he just flatly says no. He's a nomadic acquaintance, not a friend.

>>

>>
When this initially aired it spooked tiny baby me somethin awful. Something about the tone rubbed my little kid brain entirely the wrong way, and it didn't help that there was a subplot in there about a girl with an invisible head.

Also. The Groke. fuck.

Fast-forward to a couple years ago, it's on youtube, I watch a couple episodes - I love it.

Turns out occasionally spooky slice-of-life anime about trolls and shit written by gay Scandinavian women is my kind of genre.

There is a few changes - mainly in lighting and music in some episdoes. Originalsounds scary and even depresing in times - but still maching the scenes. The UK version has more cheerfull music and lighting (for exaple with groke) is lighter so you can actualy see her more.

Also I really LOVED the Riviera! But for some reason it was direct to Dvd here...
>>
the show was very popular in bosnia in the 90s, alot of people grew up on it and almost everyone knows about the moomins here.
we have a GOAT dub of that show and that really helped it's popularity. I liked watching it with my mom. She loved the the episodes that had snow/winter in them.
>>
>>84368362
Moomin is an enigma of languages.
Was originally written in swedish as the lady who wrote it never spoke finnish. She was however born and raised in Finland thus it counts as finnish. The cartoon was originally made and voiced in Japan (but directed by people from the authors family).
Also the recent movie was made in France.

You can watch Moomin in any goddamn language you want.
Fun fact: in the swedish dub of Moomin. The author is narrating.

Mumin technichally doesn't count as either Finnish, nor Swedish. It's a minority culture in Finland known as Finlandssvensk. It's hard to describe how it works, but geographically and officially they're Finnish, but many, if not most, never learn the Finnish language since it's not really required to live there, since so many speak swedish. I know it's technically Finnish, but at the same time it's not, but at the same time it is.

The "correct" way to watch Mumin is in Swedish, since it's the most accurate version of the show.

Also, your fun fact is inaccurate. Tove is not the narrator in the Swedish dub of the cartoon. The narrator's name is Vivi-Ann Sjögren.

>>84370773
This is a common misconception. She was actually bi. Mumrik/Snufkin is allegedly based on Atos Wirtanen, a man she was engaged with for a while. He also owned a green hat similar to Mumriks/Snufkin's.

When Tove's mother died, she started to view the Moominvalley as a much more darker place, and eventually she just couldn't bear herself to keep coming back, it was too hard to write about it.

The last book ends with a character called Toft, who stands on a bridge, waiting for the Moomin family to return from their trip overseas. You never know if they come back or not. There's no implication that they either do or don't, the books just end there. It's sad as hell.

Not really though. You have some small cities or fishing towns in the western coast where people try to speak only swedish but the vast majority of finnish-swedes are able to speak finnish, since not speaking the language of the 96% majority of the country you live your entire life in is a fucking retarded move and limits your life sphere significantly

Most Fennoswedes, at least ones that aren't elderly, know Finnish to a degree, but in some regions, like Vaasa, where the Fennoswedes are more numerous, they refuse to speak Finnish unless it is absolutely necessary out of principle, because they are cunts with attitude problems.
They almost live in self imposed apartheid over here. They absolutely refuse to interact with Finnish speaking Finns if they can avoid it. Our fucking schools are separated between the languages.

Why are the names changed for each region?

European names are weird.

Much worse than the Finnish one. Actually even worse than the English one.

So is she a little girl or is she just fun sized?
>>
>>84398858
She's the same age as Moomin.

>>84398537
Dragonballification. If a name sounds weird, just butcher it! English is the number one language anyway so who cares, right?

Go back to tumblr, Spurdo.

I'm not even Finnish, and Finnish isn't even the original language it's written in.
>>
>>84379736
That's very cool - I had absolutely no idea where the Groke interpretation pic was from.
>>
>>84393983
Yes. The downside is that we don't fit in with Finns or Swedes.

>Ancestry:
>Swedish ancestor moved to Finland in search of work in the 16th century.
>Clan back to Sweden in the 17th century, escaping the famine in Finland.
>Moved to Finland again in the 18th century after wars with Russia had drained the menfolk.
>Dad moved to Sweden in search of work in the 20th century.
Feels bothnian, man.

The book series is fascinating, if a little disturbing. The stories start out very light-hearted and playful, but then midway through (Moomland in Midwinter) they start to take a somber turn. The stories get progressively darker and more melancholy toward the end.

I've often wondered if Tove Jansson had some kind of mental or emotional issues that got worse as the years went by, and were reflected in her writing.

I always thought the Groke was the personification of Seasonal Affective Disorder--that dull, lingering depression that sets in when the nights are long.

Moomins are pleasant tempered largely because they hibernate in winter and avoid staying up through the long Scandinavian night. The Groke is pretty much the terror they are trying to hide from.

How is this frightening?

I have a pink one with Moomin and Snorkmaiden. Those two are the ultimate OTP.

I'll always remember his "fuck the police" streak from that flooding arc. Summoning monsters, recruiting children to follow him on his quest, ignoring the DO NOT WALK sign etc.

I mean holy shit we finally got to see what the hell he was busy doing all the time and it was awesome. Make a fucking video game already.
>>
>>84398590
Actually one of my favorite voicework of all time. Kind of hard to post examples but several scenes were so much like earsex that I'd just rewind them over and over again. These people knew how to emote like no other.

I want a Moomin FPS.

Zombie Apocalypse in the Moomin Valley.

You get to play as Snufkin (firepower, equipment) or My (speed, agility). The premise is to get the hell out of the valley per boat.

There are three benevolent non-zombies left, Snufkin, My and Sniff. Keeping Sniff alive isn't vital, but he spawns mutated sniff-clones everywhere once zombified (getting Sniff out alive will be a special achievement as he will run off to get bitten whenever you look away).

You start off with various melee weapons to duke it out with zombie moomintrolls (and others) that come for your brains. All your classic weapons from broadswords to hockey sticks and proper Molotov Cocktails (not the ragged gasoline-in-a-bottle bullshit).

Hattifnatter are neutral. You can grab them for ammo/power, but they will explode if hit, jumped on or ran into. Advanced weapons (e.g. crossbow) rely on shooting Hattifnatter into moomintrolls to give them heart attacks.

Moominpappa is the final boss, he will fiercely defend the lighthouse with his arsenal.

Most people would start as Snufkin for his ability to dual wield things (two crossbows, to make the fired hattifnatter collide at a distance and explode in the air, takes a hell of a time to reload), but would eventually look at My's ability to evade the Sniff-swarms rather than mow them down.

>It's hard to describe how it works, but >geographically and officially they're Finnish, but many, if not most, never learn the Finnish language since it's not really required to live there, since so many speak swedish.
Bullshit. Less than half percent of Hurris are monolingual.

it's just hufsa, no n. Still scared me.
sounds kinda like gufs, or nifs, meaning scary.

still fucking stupid though, that all the other nordics got names similiar to the original one. While we got some completely new one. It sticks out like a sore thumb

But hey, at least they won that hockey match!
Oh wait, the scores are still 4 to 1 on average wins.

I would burn Swedish flags too when i finally won.

Do they have super stubby legs or are they standing in super deep holes?

I enjoyed it Moomins on the Riviera. I only wish there had been more Mymble (Mymble's Daughter) on it. Her attitude and voice were so attractive.

Here's a reliable torrent for those who want to check it out.
https://kat.cr/usearch/?q=Moomins+on+the+Riviera+&from=opensearch

I've been trying to get some original Moomins and the Comet with original Finnish dub / English subs, but so far all I've found is a made for TV cut version in low low quality. I wish they'd put out a DVD of this!

(I have ways of getting the translation, but I do need that uncut video source.)

There was a 3D Moomin game for DS. It's only in Japanese though. If I remember right there was also a GBC game and a different European DS game.
