People bitch about stuff like Squirrel Girl or Gwenpool or Bendises of the Galaxy but I want you to seriously tell me if those comics are as bad as the worst thing Marvel is putting out right now?

Hellcat is an anti-cape comic. It is a superhero comic with no superheroics. Fights don't exist, they happen off screen. Really nothing happens in Hellcat. Things are solved via deus ex machina because any sort of conflcit is not what's important. See, Hellcat exists as nothing but Kate Leth's self-insert fanfiction. Kate is such a narcissist that she believes we'll find her life as interesting as she does. Did you know that Kate has had bedbugs? Well here's a story where Patsy has to get rid of magic bedbugs! Kate has totally rockin' tattoos so here's a story where Patsy gets a tattoo! Aren't tattoos cool and interesting? Man, wouldn't it be great if Kate just had all kinds of cool gay friends and got to hang around with cool women all the time? Well in Hellcat, she can!

That's to say nothing of the""""""art"""""" which is an abomination all on its own. Nat's fill-in was bad enough but it's not like the regular artist is any better. The entire thing is laid out in the most banal fashion possible, poor depth all over the place, characters look like children even when they're not being drawn chibi style, the awful coloring, constant lack of backgrounds... the entire thing is amateurish and childish.

Patsy Walker aka Hellcat is not only the worst comic Marvel is currently producing, it may very well be the worst thing Marvel has published in the last 15 years. Yes, even worse than Austen's X-Men; Hellcat doesn't even have the car crash element going for it.
>>
>>84243864
yknow i was gonna defend this for a second, as /co/ seems to have a heavy dose of tumblr boogeyman, a general anti-fun anti-quirky mentality..
then i saw "my cat named kitten is a feminist" and i lost it. jesus fucking christ, what happened?
>>
>>84243864

I do that with like 90% of comics out today and most posts here

>>

>Have you tried not paying attention to it
Considering its sales nobody is.
>>
>>84244148
Also, samefagging but with all of the bitching about "how do we fix Marvel" and shit on this board, it's more than valid to point out a book that is emblematic of everything that's wrong with current Marvel.
>>
>>84244091
That'll teach you to have hope.

I believe in gender equality. So I tore up my women's scholarship and signed a draft card.

It's bland cutesy wish fulfillment shit that's tailored to teenage girls. It's no like it's supposed to be anything different. Just short little SOL bits.

There's worse shit out there.
>>
>>84244312
This. The worst thing about it is that it's just boring.
Compared to shit like what happened in Mockingbird #3 and Angela: Queen of Hel it's fucking nothing.

Man, art takes so much time to do, so much time to just create and craft and let alone make well, and people spend lifetimes trying to get that stuff published. And sure, a lot of it is bad, but usually it's under the expected guise of, you know, trying to be good, you know? No matter if something is schlock shit if the person at least fucking tried to make something of their art it's at least worth the discussion.

But when something that is so utterly banal and so utterly full of a very obvious lack of caring, lack of passion, with nothing going for it, something that is undeserving of the time it took to make it, and then it gets published commercially on top of that? LIke it's not even really pandering to an audience as much as serving for the self interests of an author who doesn't care about their art? And yet it's given 5his opportunity thousands would literally kill for? And then when it just doesn't go away and when it starts to seep into everything else around it, and people just tell you to ignore it, because "art is expendable, man, art isn't worth anything anyway, jusy lower your standards until troglodyte shit is acceptable to your palate"?

I dunno, there's something about that goes from just a bad but negligible experience to something kind of insulting and depressing.

>>
the art is kind of cute and it's nice to see an old neglected property brought out of the attic but it could have been better if it were more like The New Frontier rather than Archie Comics meets Love and Rockets without any of Archie's warmth or Love and Rockets edge

>it's nice to see an old neglected property brought out of the attic

To be fair something needs to be done about the state of comics aimed at children in general though especialy on dcs side it seems that if it's aimed at a younger audience it has to be juvenile crap.

Do you think anybody would mind if they just adjusted there ratings standards so there currently 13+ stuff can get labeled 8+ and the 8+ can be thrown out.

Agree it's the absolute worst. The Natasha Allegri fill-in issue would sweep the awards if there were a Golden Turkey Award-sorta thing for comics. In fact, we should start holding one starting this year, as a counterpoint to the Eisners and the Harveys. Call them the "Leths."
>>
Kate Leth is such a narcissist she would accept a Leth award, even to be insulted.
>>
>>84250266
Let's look back on the worst comics of each year
85 and 86 crisis on infinite earths
1988 was probably hellblazer 13 they really dropped the ball on that one
Worst of 2011 was obvisuly red hood and the outlaws 1 (I dropped the comic after that issue so I don't know much about the rest)
2014 was the good the bad and the ponies
2015 is dragontown
>>

Who will play Hellcat at in the MCU ?
>>
>>84250686
I want to see someone point out in a future issue "Hey, weren't you married to the Antichrist a while back?". Patsy gets PTSD flashbacks and the art shifts into Ruins-mode, with a shrink explaining that Patsy's bizarre behavior was her coping mechanism for severe trauma and the rest of the series is a harrowing tale of a woman struggling to hold her sanity after being exposed to the horrors of Hell.

It reads well with the Druid mini-series as a follow-up/coda. It's bleak as hell, but it was part of Marvel's attempt to create a Vertigo-like "mature" subline of comics around the time when DC was scoring very big with the critics. Of course it never went anywhere.

I've always been into punk music at least casually since I was a kid. Always liked the way big mohawks look. Doubly so if they are dyed green or something. Those are different than the style that people are wearing now which is usually kept down and just essentially one side of their head shaved to look cutesy tough. I've seen a handful of people sport it well and my problem isn't so much the haircut itself, just the fact that it's everywhere among female nerds.

Also, another reason for pills as opposed to guns is not everyone has a gun and pills might seem like a less painful solution. Not a vanity thing entirely, though I'm sure there are cases where it is so (which is ironic given that you shit yourself upon death so no one will look pretty, no matter how in tact their face is, if they're covered in shit.) Plenty of men have overdosed on pills and I had a friend who tried it, as well. A lot of folks who try it just don't understand how low of a chance they have of actually dying from it because that aspect of it isn't really shown in TV/movies/news reports.

A lot of people try it and never succeed. I probably will at some point as most of my older cousins and one of my younger ones along with my brother have all tried to kill themselves at one point or another and, thankfully, failed. Some people back off at the last moment but some commit and still end up living through it. Just gotta hope people can learn from it and do something with their lives. Even if Hellcat is shitty, at least this chick found something to keep her going. Might irritate a lot of people on /co/, but it makes at least a handful of other people happy.
>>
>>84252037
There's a world of difference between backing down at the last moment, and committing to it and being too much of a fuckup to get it right, anon.
>>
>>84251873

She didn't commit to it. She used a method that didn't ensure her death because it was a cry for attention.

Nobody cares if you say "I thought about killing myself but changed my mind", but they do if you "took a whole bottle of pills!"

If someone really wanted to kill themselves they'd use a method to make sure the job got done.

Keep it in perspective people. While this book is clearly dull garbage, does I think there's some question on whether it actually reaches storytime of pain levels, like Marville, Trouble or the Unfunnies.
>>

It's hard to judge, in my opinion. What you're saying isn't unlikely, but, well...

Leth is so tremendously fucking idiotic she might well have thought that would kill her. I have more respect for the intelligence of a goddamn rabbit than I do her. And not one from a fucking cartoon, either.
>>
I think the basic problem is that Kate Leth isn't very funny. She has a few zingers but nowhere near enough to do a lighthearted comedy book like this. Compare with Peter David who could knock it out of the park every month in X-Factor AND also have some good drama and seriousness going. Leth's stuff is more like a low-tier webcomic, good for an occasional smile and the odd chuckle, but nowhere near pro level.
>>
>>84251682

Keep telling yourself that. Hellcat was never popular, that's why for 40 years she only made guest appearances in other peoples books, and she was usually treated as a joke character anyway. Everything about her is a lie, and a company wide invoke at Marvel.

Well, you see, Amazing Strawman-woman, women actually DO synchronize if they're around each other long enough, and periods don't take a "time out" when things get really bad. Boners, on the other hand, will more often than not NOT spring up when being mauled to death by Darkseid (despite how cute he looks in that little skirt), so that's not really a viable concern for me. Also, boners don't synchronize, and you are a fucking joke that exists solely as a "mean guys said a thing and then I thought of this PERFECT response hours later maaaaan if I had just said it then!" response that would have been shot down five seconds after it was uttered.

this isnt tailored to teenage girls, teenage girls are into fights and romance and drama.

This is like a 2000 era webcomic version of a comic, where everyone is UNIQUE and there are LESSSBIANNNNS but at the same time eveyrone isextremely unnofensive and non aggressive. Its almost like they are grabbing homosexuals and turning them into teddy bears that can do no harm and then just have them around shopping for clothes or having cake.

Its kinda creepy that someone would reduce people like this, they are not even part of the narrative, they are just there to be.. unoffensive?

I hate these mentalities of 'we're all perfect' because it's always the worst people who believe it. They'll take those sayings, hang them up over their bed, and use it as a license to become raging cunts (both men and women).

Why should they improve? If you can't handle them at their worst, you don't deserve them at their best.
They get belligerently drunk, and start yelling at people and breaking stuff? Lol, they party hard, everyone makes mistakes.
They see they need to get better? Just acknowledge it in a deprecating joke, and that makes it ok!

Instead of teaching people 'you're perfect the way you are', we should preach 'you have potential to do great things. You must work to get there'

Patsy being a Mary Sue is pretty much in line with the original Stan Lee/Al Hartley comics to be fair.

Patsy is not really a superhero, she's a teen romance character Steve Englehart brought into the superhero world when teen romance collapsed, but I don't see the problem with doing her comic in a non-superhero way. At least it gets points for having Hedy around.

Also, there's a bit of irony complaining about eternal children when you're on a board for comics and cartoons.

I did what I said I would, /co/, and the thread is still up. It's simultaneously not as bad and worse than I thought it would be.

There's a scene where they talk about how MEN ARE THE WORST and the way in which the panel is arranged, the two characters saying that are looking at the camera. Later on, they intimidate some STRAIGHT CIS WHITE MALE with a Spider-Man fedora. Then she makes a joke about not liking refrigerators a little later because, lol, women in refrigerators, amirite, guys? So clever.

However, the concept of a slice-of-life kind of thing with the whole "Heroes for Hire" but not really in the the heroing way, in the let's use our powers for mundane things. That's an interesting idea. I like the coloring of it. When they don't make the characters chibi, I like the art style enough. I'll check out the next few issues and see what's up.

It very much reminds me of a mid 2000s webcomic, though. Both in a good and bad way. The pacing, the jokes (oh my god retail jobs are the worst u guys!), and the writing are all just very webcomic-y. If this is still up when I'm done reading the next few issues, I'll post another blog and let you know what I thought because what other thread is going to occupy this space? The justification for attacks on people that bring it up is 1) freedom of speech is not freedom from criticism of your speech. You can say what you want, but other people have the right to say you suck, you should shut up, etc. 2) someone telling you to shut up isn't violating your freedom of speech. If the government told you to shut up then that would be different.

It's not my goddamn fault that Marvel has no idea what to do with any of their characters and constantly recycles the C-listers in shitty books nobody ever references again.

I liked her portrayal in Jessica Jones. Hopefully the synergy mandate makes her stick around after they fire Leth.

That said, I don't completely hate AKA Hellcat. The art is cute (Shulk could be better) and at least they're doing something with her entourage of sidecharacters. The story could be better - it doesn't know what it wants to do, kind of like TUSQ.

Hellcat has a lot going for her, but I don't think the current series uses her very well. But then that is true of a lot of current Marvel series.

When you look at a character, concept or team in a shared universe I think it's vital that you crystallize out what makes that character special. What do they add to the universe? What sort of stories can you tell with them that you can't tell with anyone else? For Patsy there's two main things, both of which are tricky to pull off.

First, Hellcat was Marvel's first female Peter Parker. All the major female characters that Marvel had up until that point had either been retiring, fragile romantic interests, or aloof, serious-minded professionals. Patsy broke the mold by being an irreverent, wise-cracking woman who constantly tried to get her teammates to lighten up. Her friendship with Valkyrie worked so well because of this, with Brunnhilde being the straight woman to Patsy's antics. Naturally this is hardly anything unique today, where wise-cracking, quipping female heroes are everywhere, but back then this was something that really made her stand out. Being funny is a vital part of Patsy, and it needs to be captured well.

The Leth series attempts this but it fails at one very vital narrative point. In the classic comics where she appeared, Hellcat was the whacky element in a serious world. She was embroiled in a dark, violent setting filled with death, despair and life-threatening situations and much like Spidey she coped by being flippant. In the current series, Hellcat lives in a whacky, flippant world where nothing is serious. She's a cartoon character in a cartoon world, thus removing the point of her humor. That's probably the most fundamental flaw of the Leth series for me because it's such an intrinsic problem that it affects everything in the comic.
>>
>>84272322

The second vital part to Patsy is linked to the first, and it's the friction generated by her being a character straddling different sides of existence. She's perhaps the first example of a long-running supporting, non-costumed character become a superhero permanently, stepping over from being a model and a celebrity to becoming a masked crimefighter. She's also stuck between the mundane world and the dark realm of the supernatural, often confronting and dealing with demons and other threats from beyond, as well as her doomed romance with Daimon Hellstrom. The frisson created by her being a cross-genre character, a normal woman realizing her dream to become a superheroine, is very fascinating to me. Again, this is not something unique today. Kamala Khan is pretty much the same concept, although for Kamala her self-realization came through the traditional accident rather than actively pursuing it like Patsy. Hellcat hanging out with the Avengers or Defenders in the role of fangirl-made-good was the nave for a lot of her 70s and 80s stories and it's still a great angle today. She still has a foot in her old world of modeling, acting and similar, but the other one is planted firmly in superheroics. This is also something the Leth series attempts to use and actually does decently at times. However the first flaw I mentioned above punctures any impact those good points might have, since you still get the impression she's living in a cartoon version of the Marvel Universe.

There's of course a lot of other details with Hellcat that are great such as her power set and various friendships, but these are the major points about her that I feel are lacking right now.

Bendises of the Galaxy (I like that, I'm stealing it) frustrates me more because what preceeded it was SO good. The almost decade long material from Annihilation to Thanos Imperative was cosmic perfection, it was a fantastic set of stories that really did a great job at taking all these characters and settings and building then into one cohesive package.

And Bendis tossed it all away. Look, there's something to be said for wanting to do your own thing. But in my opinion the best cape writers take what was already there and continue to build off it organically, and in the process of doing so tell their own stories.

It's frustrating because Bendis had such a strong base to work off of, and instead just ignores it to do some other bullshit that was nowhere near as good.

Hellcat is definitely not good, but it's just so... nothing. Like OP said, nothing fucking happens in it, any writer that comes after Leth could ignore it and nothing would really be lost. And I doubt any of us expected much from here anyways.

What I lament about GotG is the loss of potential, because I know Bendis is CAPABLE of making something good. And I lament how it dragged down this great era of cosmic storytelling with it.

All caught up now. It's okay. When it's at it's best, it's entertaining. When it's at its worse, you roll your eyes. Aside from at least one to three pieces of dialogue an issue being disgustingly bad, the only truly terrible thing about this comic is the way Allegri drew Shulk. She looks like she's giggling as she runs away from her older brother at the beach in this panel. "Oniichan, thanks for everything."

There is one tidbit that I just want to discuss, though. In #7, when she's signing comics, she makes a joke about wanting to die again because it might be better than signing comics. Then Tom ~shames~ her for it. If the author disproves of making suicide-y jokes enough to have a character point it out (which didn't seem in character for him anyway, he didn't seem like the team mom or anything), why the fuck put that in?

Imagine waking up everyday feeling like you have no control, nothing you do is right or even matters even when you know you have friends and family. I know a guy who's an amazing artist who could pretty much do anything but his crippling depression pretty much negates any possibility of that happening because all he can do is focus on what he did wrong. He can never say "Hey look what I did" without resorting to bringing up something he feels he did wrong in a highly self-depreciating way. For a Christmas gift he did this custom made diorama of a boss fight from the Megaman X series for a friend that looked like something that Capcom would put out. I told him he should really do more of these as kits to sell at the local conventions in town but he's so hung up by his depression he won't do it.

Depression is a fucking bitch of a disease.

Just like we're doing right now? Instead of making a comic we're constantly making threads about it.

First row would fit in perfectly with our Marble vs BC threads.

I don't give a single flying fuck if Leth decides to tell me to shut up. It's not going to affect a damn thing. I give a fuck about this constant yammering on about how "freedom of speech only applies to the government." That's a fucked up meme, and patently untrue.

I don't know how you got me being pissy about Leth from that post, actually. I literally said nothing about her.
>>
>>84275768

>freedom of speech only applies to the government

Funny how that talking point went out the window once Peter Thiel's war on Gawker was revealed.

>You can say what you want, but other people have the right to say you suck
This is completely and absolutely true though. This is how this thread came to exist. Leth can say whatever she wants but we are mocking her for it.
>you should shut up
Depends. Actions have consequences. That's just a law of life.
>>
>>84278189
I didn't say anything about the government either so I guess we're even.

Dick Powers, Private Eye - no case too long or hard for his penetrating investigative abilities.

The gov't can't suppress what you can and cannot say but that doesn't protect you from everyone else saying you're wrong or not having anything to do with you because of what you say. You can't scream "freedom of speech" if you publicly say racist stuff and get fired from your job the next day because the company you work for doesn't approve of those comments and doesn't want to associate itself with people who think that way.

In Canada however they will suppress people who spread hateful speech even if they say what they're saying is "factual."

>enchantress

this isn't an uncommon thing super heroes have to deal with
>>
>>84280564
Yes, this is where free association meets free speech. That said, it's a fucking travesty how much influence the corporation you work for has over what you say, and is leading to very real suppression of free discourse. The fact that jobs are frequently demanding your Facebook login info fucking terrifies me, and I don't have a goddamn Facebook account.

Related but not the same thing, the concept of "right to reply" is largely gone. Media institutions can say fucked up, unfounded shit about you, and use their position in society to de facto censor anything you say in response. And you damn well know slander/libel lawsuits are never won, so don't pretend that's a suitable substitution.

Don't pretend it's black and white.

It's an awful concept, and was came about from an awful idea, but the current artist does cute art and the story doesn't make my head hurt.

That was a great conversation

>and in the phallus dimension, the mighty towers have gone limp
>>
>>84281297
I know it's not black and white. I think a corporation doesn't need to have your Facebook account up front. If they want that info they can get it themselves, but you also have to remember that Facebook isn't 100% public like being outside, it's a service provided by the private sector so they can legally do what they want with what you post on it. So if you wanna say something that goes against the grain, best do that under a different name on a site that isn't Facebook. You gotta evolve with the technology.
>>
>>84282272
Well, yeah. Like I said, I don't have a Facebook for that reason, and I'm currently posting on 4chan. Hell, I miss when it was assumed that forums would be pseudonymous.

Evolving with the technology doesn't make the way technology and the surrounding politics are going any better, man.

The internet is becoming more and more integrated into our lives. You got babyboomers who barely know a thing about computers using FB and other social media. You got memes being something the average Joe talks about in the real world now. The internet is no longer the secret club for nerds and outcasts. The internet is normies.

I said I actually like some aspects of the art. The social justice shit is hamfisted as fuck, but I'm not ~triggered~ by it enough to let it ruin my day or keep me from enjoying the enjoyable parts of the comic. Some of the jokes aren't funny, some of them are. It is reminiscent of 2000s era webcomics which I liked as a teen so, yes, it's comfortable/familiar to me and mildly nostalgic.

I don't like it because /co/ doesn't like it. I checked it out for that reason. I don't even know if I enjoy it enough to be like "Yeah, I like that Hellcat comic." Reading 7 comics doesn't take that much time. I've wasted plenty of time doing more asinine shit than just going through a mediocre comic. Like I said, it was entertaining at times.

Just for the record, I'm a fiftysomething white male who's been reading these damn things since Nixon was president and Jack Kirby was at DC. I'm cranky and hidebound and as protective/proprietary about characters as the next geek. I'm as far away from being an SJW (whatever the hell you think that means...) as you can be without actually being Eron Gjoni.

And I like this book.

I like that we're in a place where Marvel actually thinks about publishing books like this. How well they sell or not is beside the point; the point is that a noticeable break from decades of the same ol' same ol' is happening, and I'm all for it. I'm for different. I'm for trying. The world is changing, the audience is changing, and the only problem with that is that so many groinks out there insist on taking it personally. You can like or hate AKA Hellcat or Kate Leth as you please, but thinking it's some sort of direct attack on you is just ghaddam silly.

>>84287311
Well that's the thing, this sort of thing *will* continue, in one for or another, simply because there are now lots of people out there reading comics who are not white male twentysomething geeks. That toothpaste is *not* going back into the tube, no matter how bad anyone wants it to.
