Joe Shuster was raised in america, his family moved from Toronto to Cleveland when he was 9 or 10 years old and he spent pretty much the rest of his life in America as an American citizen.

you might as well claim someone who moved to america from africa when they were 10 and spent the rest of their life here as a normal citizen was REALLY african.

literal cultural appropiation.

get a power sander, equip it with a certain grade of sand paper, spray the paint with a light coating of paint thinner.

make sure you're wearing a rebreather to protect yourself from fumes. You may need an extension cord to reach the object you're stripping.

5 minutes tops.

as opposed to possible damaging the train and opening it up to water damage due to the rivets popping holes in the chassis.

this character is stupid as hell, and so by extension is the writer.

okay they're mildly edited zoids. Point is you're taking a premise that's already absurd and pushing it further with robots that look like animals. You'd be better off just making them look like generic scifi robots and look more original in the process and you wouldn't undermine any attempt at a serious tone every time one of the animal robots enters the scene.

90% of the technological stuff is bluntly plaigerized from multiple sources. I'm seeing videogames, tabletop RPGs, anime, etc. It's pretty decent art, better than a lot of the trash the big two are backing but I take issue with lazy machine design.

Wait if it's all fake and you're only feeling pain, then why would you ever surrender? Your body is fine, they can do whatever the hell they want and you'll be okay. Real torture is scary because they can burn off your nads or poke your eyes out and you'll have to live with that shit the rest of your life.

honestly invading canada for water is laughable, we have our own reserves of the stuff and it's not exactly hard to refine seawater into potable water.

Honestly the money spent on giant gorrilla robots would probably be better served on water refineries, plumbing, and bottling facilities.

I'm more annoyed about someone creating a VR torture machine when instead you could've presented VR gaslighting ala #8 and the village which would've been way more entertaining.

eh the thing about Torture is we usually outsourced that crap to third world hell holes we kept on black books. Why our military ever bothered I don't know, it's a waste of time and money, damaging to morale, and makes us look bad.

It's counter productive. Why bother abusing a VR machine that can create a perfect illusion when you can just present a gaslighting scenario that destroys someone's sense of reality and then have them give you what you want?

it's a really unimaginative and blunt use of a technology that Interrogators would wet themselves over having.

it makes your country look bad, is inhumane and goes against multiple international treaties and basic agreed iupon morality. Nevermind that waterboarding can cause permanent lung damage and has resulted in multiple drowning deaths.

It is bluntly torture, you can torture someone with tickling or sleep production.

It rarely results in useful information and is more useful as a way to punish someone than to get actionable intelligence.

While I'm no waterboarding expert you are misunderstanding an important distinction. The purpose isn't to not cause damage. it's to not cause any obviously visible damage. A person with skin flayed to little bits is going to cause more outrage than a person with various internal injuries.
>>
>>84186698
Actually, Waterboarding as a torture is actually pretty clever.

You see it actually causes fucking nothing to the body. It merely causes the body to think it's drowning when in reality it's drowning due to the water and the cutoff of direct breathing.

Go get a damp cloth and put it over your mouth. You can breathe through it fine and you don't take water from the cloth, not much anyway.

Waterboarding is probably the most humane torture in existance because in reality, it's not harming anybody.

So... let's recap.

Canada goes nuts and stages a pre-emptive strike against the United States because they're paranoid syrup sucking cunts. The US, naturally, retaliates and decides to use Canadian resources to support their substantially larger population which is in desperate need of basic supplies like water.

A group of pissed off insurgents who apparently have absolutely no qualms about executing prisoners of war or staging suicide bombing attacks blow up a group of water harvesters, contaminating the only surviving fresh water source in all of North America beyond recovery, guaranteeing their American enemies, and the entire rest of the continent a slow, horrible death from starvation and dehydration.

Maybe. It's left open because, ultimately, it doesn't matter.

Eh, if some dudes killed my parents in a pointless war I'd probably want to destroy their entire country too. Wouldn't you? It's a purely spiteful motivation, but when you've experienced loss of that level, had your whole life taken from you, making yourself feel better is all that really matters. And killing everyone responsible and everyone they ever loved will probably make you feel better.

And that's the point, it seems. Going in to these countries to fix them by killing a whole bunch of people never works, because you're just creating a lot of bitter, angry people utterly hostile to you and any order you attempt to put in place, who will destroy your works out of pure spite.

And pointing out retarded writing doesn't make one a nazi. In fact, buying into obvious propaganda only for the fact that you like what it has to say kind of makes you a Nazi.

I never said that. I said it's jingoistic propaganda, and that that's what's wrong with it. If you are seriously shilling for this comic as balanced political commentary, you're more of a Nazi than I'll ever be. Or a commie. There is literally no such thing as a work of fiction that doesn't make a moralistic value judgement of some sort through the presentation of its subjects. Even if the author doesn't intend so. Especially if the author doesn't intend so, since the act of trying to be aploitcal is a inherently political and also reveals what the author values as "neutral"

This is as far as "dumb crap" as it gets. This is basically the first thing they teach you in any college-level lit class. There is no escaping politics in storytelling, ever.

this comic is basically a failure but if it had gone further in any of the directions it hinted at it might have been pretty good

the way i see it, there are three obvious ways you could handle the canada vs. america premise, each of which has potential of its own.
1. a relatively serious/'realistic' take on the crazy what-if scenario of canada fighting the united states
2. an allegory about canadian (and american) culture that uses that exaggerated scenario to draw out and comment on their national characteristics
3. a parody of jingoistic american action media that flips the script for satirical effect

i don't think it can be straightforwardly put into any of these categories -- especially not #1, since there's giant monkey robots and stuff running around. given that, the most charitable reading lies somewhere between two and three: the 'blood for water' stuff reads as a straightforward critique of american foreign policy, while the larger-than-life violence and patriotism seem intended to be read as a tongue in cheek take on the tropes of propaganda stories.

if that's the case, though, it seems like there are two problems with its execution.

the first is that the plot keeps getting lost in digressions that read as 'serious,' but don't further any of the above goals -- the VR torture machine and the debate over who started the war are both neat concepts, but neither are particularly 'realistic,' and moreover, neither seem to build or even comment on any of the above themes. that in itself becomes a negative, given how much time is spent on these plot elements: they add twists and turns to the story, but not any actual substance. (cont. in next post)
>>
>>84203760
70's tech that can be hijacked via wifi? I think you also might need to check your history textbook concerning the date of the moon landing.
>>
>>84203937
the second (and more major) one is that, if the comic is supposed to be canadian ‘propaganda,’ then whether it’s ironic or not, it doesn’t succeed on its own terms — instead of telling a story about the superiority of canada’s national character to america’s, it tells a standard invasion story where tenacious natives beat arrogant invaders. although some aspects (the suicide vest, etc.) are clear references to america’s quagmire in the middle east, the structure's so boilerplate that it’s hard to argue that it carries distinct allegorical value of any kind — it establishes that america is ‘bad’ and canada is ‘good,’ but doesn’t bother to explain how or why they are.

for an example of how this might have been done better: one character brings up as a positive the fact that canada took in far more refugees than america did. if the comic is meant to function as propaganda, why not show how canada's greater hospitality/diversity makes it a superior nation in the story itself, rather than just namedropping a historical event (and making one character ethnically syrian?) whatever the author’s opinion on the issue is, given that the story is set during a war, it'd be easy to set up a fictional situation that parallels the refugee crisis to whatever end they wanted.

that discrepancy makes up my core complaint with this story: even if it’s meant to be read as tongue in cheek pro-canada propaganda with an allegorical twist (which, as i mentioned above, seems like the most charitable interpretation,) its ‘canadian-ness’ is just window dressing, not something that you could argue actually works as a substantial commentary. look at how many of the things the characters hold up as ‘canadian’ are just regional slang or, worse, fucking brand names! no matter how many levels of irony its premise is operating on, its execution unintentionally just serves to illustrate the ridiculousness of nationalism in the globalized era.
>>
>>84203948
Maybe not 70s tech but the shit in them isn't anything too mind blowing because they're built with one of the design goals being that they are expendable. You aren't going to put state of the art shit in something that has a good chance of getting shot down.
>>
>>84204002

the thing is the comic goes to show the average civilian is ignorant and impulsive, sometimes willfully. They're killing soldiers who surrender out of revenge at the start.
The US army is acting strictly on information, necessity and a plan. They're not just poisoning the well to stick it to the enemy, they're not just killing whoever they come across, they take prisoners and interrogate them. Yes they acquire information through needlessly cruel psychological torture becaue the plot needs some dirt on their effort but the point stands they wanted to make their overall operation a surgical effort not just a scorched earth thing or petty slap fight.

So in a way they don't have the right, but they're not in the wrong. People may not like the cold tactical approach because it feels emotionless and inhuman, but sometimes if you take a step back you realize emotional and human are not always good things.

Amber's family was blown the fuck up as a response to an act of war not just for kicks, but come the war itself her brother was captured and kept alive. Come her turn she and her friends kill tons of soldiers willy nilly and blow up resources just because. Just. Because.

They didn't achieve dick for anyone.

People like that talking about who's right, innocent and all that seems like they stand on a fragile soap box arguing selectively to paint themselves as good in a world where neither exists so cleanly anymore but they want to throw dirt on "the enemy" because it makes being a piece of shit easier. Which is the peak of irony because that sort of self-brainwashed thinking is exactly what America is usually lambasted for.

The US military ravaged Canada killing thousands of civilians and continued to do so with the concentration camps all for water, so of course there's a fucking insurgency

Wrong, they foiled America's attempt to siphon the last bit of usable water in North America. Now it's not only Canada what will be destroyed by this but America too as well, mutually assured destruction. The last act of pride and the only meaningful act of defiance that a small group of insurgents can perform to redeem their homeland.

Too bad. He had no right to expect mercy after he killed one of them. He's not dealing with soldiers. He's dealing with hateful civvies who would probably burn him alive or feed to dogs if they had the time and resources.

>Kill a guy
>Surrender immediately afterwards

Yes. He should have continued to attack. He was a moron for expecting them to just let him get off with shooting that guy. It'd be one thing if there were casualties in the initial fight, but once his mech was down, that was when he needed to decided to give up.

The only valid choices were

>Surrender and leave the cockpit voluntarily
or
>Shoot them and keep shooting them until you or all of them are dead.

Fuckstain chose the only wrong choice. He was a real scumbag/moron for thinking the "shoot one of them and then beg for mercy" approach would work. Especially since he was just quoting legislation and rules of combat nonsense at insurgents.
>>
>>84206331

You're a fucking mouth-breathing moron but what do you expect from an autist who struggles to understand basic human behavior. All that shit you've just typed up is fucking irrelevant when it comes to insurgencies and fighting off invaders. Revenge and redeeming the spirit of your people is far more important than living, most people given the opportunity would take a hated enemy kicking and screaming into hell with them.

There's nothing good about letting your ass get pounded by your cellmate just so he won't cut your throat in your bunk when you sleep just like there's nothing good about living as slaves in your homeland. A people without spirit lead lives worst than death and redeeming it is worth everything even in the face of absolute destruction.

>Waterboarding as a torture is actually pretty clever.

First, describing waterboarding as torture is factually wrong and inflammatory.

Second, if you read the handbook on interrogation methods our genius Administration released, the point of ALL the interrogation methods described and used was psychological.

For example, using a specially prepped room with walls designed to flex and give, so the interrogator can slam and smash the detainee around without hurting them, while giving them the IMPRESSION they are receiving the most severe beating of their lives.

It's all about making them THINK it's the worst experience they've ever suffered.

Of course, once you give away that it's all a big mind-game, it doesn't work any more, and you get shit like that muslim-allegiance-claiming nut-fuck shooting all those faggots in Florida.

Errrr....

I will gently point at Germany, Japan, and Viet Nam as counter-examples of places where it absolutely worked.

Your perspective is too small. Insurgencies are nothing new, and America has been dealing with such for over a century.

Remember, what the media is pumping into your head has very little relationship to what actually happens in reality.

Also Germany and Japan never developed proper insurgencies. America has been losing to non-conventional forces since the 1960s and has very little ability to conduct war outside of pitched battle.

But then suddenly:

Oh, that's what she meant by "that's what we call our power."

And here I thought it was just some attempt at boasting about Canadian water.

Its still dumb -- who the hell uses "hydro" as the word for water? Not to mention the entire method of determining whether she's a true "Canadian" or not (when she hadn't lived there in years) is based on a single word she said, when whether she's a true Canadian or not shouldn't even be relevant to the conversation.

I'm not gonna call it dumb, but its pretty weird.

Nah, don't worry. Europe is a big clusterfuck of international institutions and treaties, even the end of the Union wouldn't mean the end of cooperation.
I mean, look a that:

It won't be rosy, but it's hardly the apocalypse. And the UK has yet to leave.
Gibraltar is really crapping its pants due to that vote, though.

But honestly, I enjoyed the storytime not because it portrayed the US in a bad light, but because it allowed me to look inside the mind of the author, with proud, noble and ressourceful canuck freedom fighters and mustache twirling US villains with nazi superscience. And being awfully written. Propaganda trainwrecks are always fun.
I'm just sad there wasn't any crying beaver in it.

>For the purposes of this Convention, torture means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions.

U.N. Convention against Torture Part I, Article 1, ratified by the U.S. of A. on October 21st, 1994.

I think we can all agree that waterboarding inflicts severe suffering.

I personally find the fact that so many anons cannot comprehend that this isn't a patriotic propaganda piece for Canada more interesting/scary. /pol/ being /pol/ isn't anything new but looking at people and realizing "they" have these bizarre mental constructs that they shove everything into is just unsettling.

One of the implications is that if we swapped around the sides it would be celebrated with screaming eagles to the tune of the star spangled banner as clearly showing people that ran out of so many fucks to give from being oppressed that they willingly choose to doom an entire continent of people out of pure spite is supposed to be PATRIOTICALLY INSPIRATIONAL.

>Its because people will simply feed you piles of BS over and over for reprieve to the point where even if the truth were given to you youd never know it.

No, anon, it is you who does not understand. When you are using stress to force answers against a detainee's will, you expect that there will be lies, confusion, dissembling, all of that.

So you rely on secondary sources, you log and check every statement, and then you feed that back to the detainee as still more pressure. The whole point is to climb into their head and make them tell you things they don't want too.

It is a common trope to say 'torture doesn't work because they'll say anything to make it stop'. Even the much less nasty techniques we used to use would lead to that. 96 hours of sleep deprivation turns most people into zombies.

So you ask the questions and then you actually do some work on the collected intel.

Any word out of their mouth, lie, truth, fantasy, delusion, whatever it is, ANYTHING is better than nothing, every time. Because its all just material for exploitation, and it gets folded into vast amounts of other information.
