I don't expect Lance to change positions soon. He's a little hotblooded-ish early but so far the show seems to be moving him away from the direction of the Red Lion, not towards. And we don't know the Blue Lion's special personality trait, which is probably more than just welcoming new pilots. So it's either Keith graduates to the Black Lion and Allura takes over as Red which is extremely unlikely, or Keith stays but they find a way to make Red becomes the head like Force, or Allura takes over for Black which is also not unlikely given interviews suggesting that leadership is a skill she'll develop over the series.

Yep, that was all of season 1. Season 2 should drop this Winter IIRC. Season 1 was technically 12 episodes since episode 1 was double length, which is a normal length for a season.

Maybe that will be how he gets killed off. Rather than something sudden like getting blown up or shanked from behind.
He's poisoned by Haggar's attack and it makes him weak when he exerts himself too hard in battle. He's not in any immediate threat of death but it's a Sword of Damocles hanging over him.
Rather than stay back and rest, he keeps on fighting for the sake of his team.
Eventually one day he knowingly pushes himself too hard, because if he didn't Pidge would have died or something.
He comes back from the battle, severely injured but puts on a brave face so his friends stop worrying, and then BAM-pineapple salad.
That way he can die on his own terms, sort of.

If Hunk is 17, Keith and Lance are probably the same age, which I guess would put Shiro at 19 if that synopsis is correct. I imagine Pidge is slightly younger, 15-16, since she could have lied about her age like she did about her gender, unless she's just a womanlet.

Character development in general always leads the main characters to a positive result, to the point that what separated them from the other flawless heroes in their setting gets completely eradicated as they develop and become almost a complete clone. Apparently, unlike real life, characters don't develop flaws, they only overcome what they originally had.

My bet would be that he was a Galra experiment to create the ideal Paladin to serve under Zarkon, essentially a designer baby with all the best bits of DNA for the job.
