OJST gets a lot of shit for being incredibly Tumblr-y and just being not that good sometimes (it's written collaboratively with a bunch of different contributors so the quality is variable - pic very related). And some of the subjects covered just won't be most peoples' cup of tea. But Erica Moen, by all accounts, seems to be a lovely person and the comic really is the open and non-judgmental look at sex that it claims to be, which is a good thing.

It really is such a stark contrast between Willis' attempt at OJST and the real thing. Just goes to show what an absolute piece of human garbage he is.

And that's before you factor in that he's also being a massive hypocrite for giving shit to people for lack of sexual knowledge when he knew basically nothing about sex well into his 20s and was afraid to masturbate because his dead grandma would be crying in heaven over it.

Joyce really is surrounded by the shittiest people outside of a choice few. It makes most of her interactions draining to read and also pointless because you can tell she's interacting with an obstacle instead of a character.

I'm looking forward to seeing this interaction play out though, since Hank is one of those characters that has shown genuine compassion even in the face of stuff he doesn't agree with ideologically*. Even if he does end up siding with Carol or spouting some religious stuff that bothers Joyce (which I don't think is likely, it seems like he's just the designated "good" parent), it'll have way more impact because he's not just a weirdo. It's really strange though, cause he feels like a completely different character than the one from the Freshman Family Weekend arc. I know at the end he's the one who accepted Joyce's new outlook, but still it's a big swing.

We've talked about this before, but we never figured out a definite conclusion.
Personally, I think Willis' problem is that he writes in bulk, seeing the whole of the story all at once, and not the individual strips; each strip fails to stand on its own in that sense.
Or something like that.

What it also does is fuck with the actual pacing. Because Willis sees the story all at once, he does not experience the daily play of the strip; he simply throws up whatever the next part is and he's done with it. Distractions like the Dina/Danny strip may come off as seemingly important narrative shifts, but they end up becoming just that: Distractions.

If I had to make an explanation for why we had the Dina/Danny strips, it was to imply a passage of time between Joyce being triggered and her father walking out to her. This passage of time could have easily have been included within a single strip, as opposed to the two Dina/Danny strips, by showing Joyce walking out of the congregation, her Dad seeing her, and her Dad following her as she sits and takes off her hand brace. Bam, one and done.

If you NEED the Danny/Dina strips, readjust the upload schedule to put them before the strip where Joyce was triggered.

The problem with the way Willis writes drama is that 1,) He can barely take any criticism, if at all, so much constructive criticism gets through to him. As a result, he stagnates and it takes longer for him to get better at what he does. 2.) He's socially isolated and doesn't really "get people", so when he does engage with social problems he does so without fully understanding with what he's dealing with (and because of how he typically responds to criticism, it's difficult to correct him)

The problem with using the Danny/Dina strip to denote a passage of time is that there is no narrative link between Joyce getting triggered and Joyce sitting in the hallway. The only thing that could be used to denote the passage of time is the change in song, but since this is a comic strip it only works if you're aware that the lyrics in panel one aren't from the same song as the prior lyrics.
