This is a universe where there are surgeons cutting people open on the street and the police don't care. How many innocents do you think there are?

>>84060054
Mills often blends technology and mysticism. Slaine has a whole arc where evil druids use bizarre future technology, and the ABC Warriors has one where the team of robots have one of their members modified to be tri-symmetrical so he can fuse with the consciousness of the planet Mars.

I think the whole focus-group thing is not the way to make a game, because you start to bring in other people's opinions and lose some of the originality. For Viewtiful Joe, we brought in some kids to a focus test and asked them, "What do you think of the characters?" And all the kids said, "Oh, his head's too big," or "Silvia's annoying, I just want to kill her." They were just trashing the game, so I just got pissed off and said I'm not changing anything.

Honestly though, this probably should've just been an Extreme Ghostbusters adaptation. Yeah, Ramis is dead, but you can make it work with Aykroyd.

So many have trouble understanding that. Most of my favorite characters were part of an ensemble or a supporting character.

It's like a character doesn't count if they don't have an OGN or definitive solo run.

this post got me all irritated about how people don't get superhero comics are a serial medium and if you wanna learn about a character obviously you're gonna have to dive deep into junk and instead just want the one DKR/All Star Supes/single volume story.

and then i got mad at how manga pulls the trick off somehow!
>>
>>84062733
Japan has two ongoing superhero stories right now that are really up there, for what they are.
>>
>>84062733
You don't need any comic knowledge to enjoy DKR. Just the basic pop culture knowledge of Batman. Frank Miller has zero reverence for the history of characters and just wants to have fun telling stories with them
>>
Friendly reminder that Wonder Man is currently spending time inside of Rogue.
>>
>>84062733
>and then i got mad at how manga pulls the trick off somehow!
probably because manga is more linear? like if someone says "where do I start with One Piece" you tell them to start at the first volume

if someone says "where do I start with Superman" there's like a dozen answers you could give them

also everybody knows about manga pirating, for some reason comics piracy escapes people and that makes back reading harder

>>84062823
don't remind me
>>
>>84062839
People make threads on here all the time about creator owned comics asking where to start. It's like Marvel/DC have damaged their brains
>>
>>84062795
Plenty of comics do the exact same. There are certain ones like Busiekvengers that use the long history of the characters to its advantage but for the most part you can start at the beginning of a writer's run on a series and everything you need to know will be explained.

I mean, we here in this thread love stuff like JSA and Legion and Thunderbolts that are geared towards hardcore, longtime fans, but that's really the minority when it comes to cape comics.

Except for the period where Claremont X-Men was fucking really popular and had a ridiculously convoluted soap opera history, which I blame for coloring peoples' perceptions of comics being hard to get into.
>>
>>84062872
People who don't know comics assume they all started back in the 60's, ad have hundreds of issues. Notice those same people also tell you that you're going to be rich from your collection, as if every goddam comic older than 5 years = Action Comics #1.
>>
>>84062784

i meant like super long stories but somehow are sold like and to people they aren't. like death note is 109 chapters, that's roughly 109 issues of a comic. 22 page chunks of story. people will take and read that but suggest the same number of issues of i dunno Ultimate Spider-Man it seems like they won't.

>>84062839

yeah, I think you're nailing it. the ease of where to start + piracy. and one creator means consistency. like not many people have read all of Spider-Man or Fantastic Four which are about as long as One Piece. (i remember with shame every time i see a chapter number and wonder if i could've used the time somehow better)

i wonder what all happened in the history of the medium to get to that point. and how much is me being wrong as ignorant american and looking at exceptions that prove rules

>>84062903

Even Claremont X-Men wasn't that bad until the 90s.
OH the problem was shit was at it's worst when it was at it's 2nd peak of visibility. so now people have bad memories associated

Because for so long you only had Claremont and Simonson writing the books. They could work together with their editor Ann Nocenti to create a comprehensible universe out of 4 or 5 titles

I love this.

I don't get why people get so anal about that kind of thing. But I suppose to them, the continuity is the hobby, not the stories.

It's been nice how both Marvel and DC have taken a much more laid back approach to continuity the last couple of years.

While it's possible that there may have been prior science fiction inspirations, Shadowrun's take on it is pretty much identical to what we saw in this comic, right down to dealers selling both one-time and looped chips to junkies, and BtL pretty much being exactly the same as the sim-fantasies (Better than Life being the name of the chip-type), and their being, specifically, a form of VR with all the safeties turned off, 'running hot' and thus highly dangerous for said reason (right down to a lot of "Beetleheads" fiddling with their VR modules to turn off the safeties that normally keep a person's body safely comatose while in VR, so they often wander around while in BtL fantasies, getting killed by something they never saw).

I'm not trying to denigrate Punisher 2099, it just struck me how incredibly similar this particular element was, made me think a writer definitely knew of the game/maybe played it.

Obviously, there's other stuff like the police force being privatized (Lone Star), paramilitary private ambulances (DocWagon), and a whole host of other similarities, which have tons of inspiration in sci-fi.

Man, there is a lot of that article that strikes me as "this writer does not read comics"
Like, that bitching about the Black Nova family? Of course they aren't still around, they're from a miniseries about a post-apocalyptic Earth alternate universe. They only ever existed for 6 damn issues, and then the Latino Nova who they killed off the white guy for went back to being the main guy.

Should we take that as meaning that Latino characters don't deserve representation as much as Black ones in this guy's eyes?
>>
>>84078077
>Like, that bitching about the Black Nova family? Of course they aren't still around, they're from a miniseries about a post-apocalyptic Earth alternate universe. They only ever existed for 6 damn issues,
I think that's part of his problem, that's black characters designed to show up for six issues and never again, nobody bothers making good lasting additions to the main universe

>Should we take that as meaning that Latino characters don't deserve representation as much as Black ones in this guy's eyes?
He's talking specifically about black male representation. like he also complains a little about black women replacing black men

it's not a perfect article but he pretty clearly reads comics, and I approve of throwing any amount of salt towards Bendis for CWII
