I would imagine it's a large bastardization of the snake's ability to 'taste the air' so to speak. The trolls are more intuitively interesting.

The kids are a slow burn, they all have interesting hidden depths but it really takes a while to get hooked on them. They're grounded in some aspects and completely insane in other aspects (what reality breaking video game/what human genocide).

On the other hand, the trolls are all more immediately interesting. They're the first pesterlog characters to actually antagonize the kids, which makes them interesting. And as they bond with the kids throughout Act 4 we see that they're also a lot more emotionally sensitive than the kids, which makes them more appealing to teenagers that find it easier to care about characters that show their emotions rather than bury those emotions in irony and memes.

It isn't really until Act 6 that we really realize how hollow trolls and troll culture really are, and when we realize that it was probably for the best that Hussie didn't try to force drama and romance into the human storylines where we're actually supposed to believe the characters rather than look at them as exaggerated stereotypes.
