It's been interesting that Annie has always had a bit of tense relationship with Eglamore. He's always tried to be fatherly, and it's never really sat well with Annie despite their growing friendship. In fact, it's sort of been a plot point that anyone trying to be fatherly didn't sit well with her, probably because of Tony just kind of leaving her. She's also reacted pretty badly to people shitting on her father, and pretty much none of them have done so as badly as Eglamore seems to be doing here.

Then again, this is a post-return-of-Tony Annie. It'll be interesting to see what her reaction is now. I'm also still incredibly curious how Tony and Surma ended up together, and how this probably plays in to Eglamore's saltiness.

He seems to show no special interest in Surma in any of the flashbacks. Furthermore, he's shown to often go off to do his own shit and be super self conscious about romantic feelings and whether he's actually legitimately interested in a person. It sort of seems like something super big must have happened to Tony, more than Surma, to make the relationship happen.

Given what we've seen of him today, it looks like he eventually got super, SUPER into her. Even Annie could figure that out at her young age. An all in kind of guy. Which does mesh with the importance he places on emotional relationships.

Guess we'll find out in another 2 years.

Not really the guy is basically an expy for Gendo and Snape. He fell in love with Surma from afar and made his move when he saw an opportunity. The only differences are that he was more successful than Snape and a better father than Gendo (although not by much admittedly)

Maybe. But the problem is Snape was always hung up on Lily, whereas it feels like Tony never really gave her much particular thought as anything other than one of his friends. Gendo I guess could be a good comparison, but as you already mentioned, their actual personalities are a little too off. Tony actually seems not to give much of a fuck about manipulation or leading anything, being content to be doctor trying to help Surma (without any crazy alien clone cyborg attempts) and had to be dragged back to work on "their blasted Omega Device."

I really shouldn't think too much about it, though, since I doubt we're getting answers any time soon.

Surma wanted to have kids, Eggy presumably refused (as he knew it would kill her). Tony was devoted enough that he agreed despite that.

That's the real reason Eggy hates Tony so much - from his perspective Tony didn't just steal Surma, he stole her and then killed her by getting her pregnant. And then left while she died, and then abandoned Annie as well.

I mean, if you don't know the details Tony comes off as a fucking monster.
