Whatever happened to the anon(s) that were going to rip their old VHS tapes of older Adult Swim broadcasts?

probably not

I taped the last Adult Swim airing of Futurama.

I threw out my VHS of the Adult Swim premier, I also recorded a test run of Adult Swim shows I think on December 26th 2000. I got Banjo Tooie for Christmas and stop playing around 2am to find shows like Sealab and the Brak Show on Cartoon Network. At least there's this, although Cowboy Bebop is uncut.

I want to watch a whole day of 2003 Cartoon Network and I can't fucking do it and it pisses me off.
>>
>>84019460
It's really bullshit isn't it? Especially with things like [as] and cartoon network, where I personally feel like the bumps and things of that nature contributed to the atmosphere a whole lot.
Like it's just not the same watching the shows by themselves.
>>
>>84019460
I'm sure someone's recorded early 2000s cartoon network at some point
>>
>>84011506
I know they played when ASA came on. Loved watching some anime with those chill as fuck bumps. AS needs to get off this current trend and go back to a more chill vibe. Remember the Do Not Stray bumps?
>>
>>84019460
2003 CN is scarce but on MySpleen there's plenty of full blocks from the late 90s and early 00s, many Fridays blocks from 2000 and 2001 and various other tidbits. More surface all the time.

Can't say I can recall them off the top of my head, but in terms of chill bumps I personally really enjoyed stuff like the traffic one. I don't know exactly why, but the certain mix of imagery and music most older [as] bumps had just made it comfy in a bit of a surreal way. Sometimes it could even be kind of spooky for no discernible reason.
Sort of like this shit.

Speak of Adult Swim....is there a reason why they replaced Inuyasha's original OP with that orchestral shit during recent airings?

There's a TON of oldschool Cartoon Network broadcasts on myspleen too.

I would think someone, somewhere out there would have recordings... just want to feel the vibes of summer 03 again. Those bumps were so nice. If someone had tapes I would buy them for a lot more than any sane person should.
>>
>>84032356
The problem is getting the tapes. I'm sure they exist somewhere, but it's difficult to find someone with them, costs money to ship them and convert to digital, and takes time to upload them.

Although I'm sure I have a tape of [as] somewhere in the basement. I used to timer record every school night on the same tape, circa Trigun.

I've got some myspleen invites if anyone still needs them as well. Pepper Ann complete was recently uploaded.
>>
>>84033345
People always taped it, but there's always the question of whether stuff got taped over or lost. The further we get from '01, the less the chance of actually getting these earlier tapes digitized and shared with the world. A lot of the tapers in the prime teenaged demographic from the start have moved on with their lives.
>>
>>84034373
I like to buy used tapes from ebay sometimes to see what is on them. No luck with anything yet doing that though. Mostly taped Hallmark channel movies.

From a purely historical perspective, i wish a lot more complete television broadcasts were archived. It's like an unfiltered slice of what culture was like at that exact moment in time.
>>
>>84033414
Would there be a way to upload myspleen-sourced stuff as well as any tape rips we acquire here on to youtube (or other easily accessible video site) and just have a document with links?
>>
>>84034646
If it's a video I don't see why you wouldn't be able to upload it
>>
>>84034579

>>
>>84034646
Yea you could. Youtube could take some down so some might need to be on alternate sites though.
>>
>>84034646
Would it also help to make the videos private just to us to avoid copyright strikes?
>>
>>84034733
Unlisted and even private ones can still get hit automatically
>>
Whoever is giving us their own tape rips should also upload to myspleen for posterity

But yeah we might be able to get away with a youtube channel of old CN/AS stuff (ie. Roughly '96 - '06 but later AS broadcasts up until the end of the decade would be cool too) and in the channel description encourage people with tapes to digitize them and send us a copy so we can preserve and share whatever is on there.
>>
>>84034801
What about people who don't have access to myspleen?
>>
>>84034779
I mean there are already full episodes ripped from tape of various AS floating around youtube as well as some channels uploading whole blocks of commercials etc. from older eras.

However, we might have to spring for another site. We'll see though.
>>
>>84034817

>>
>>84034202

>>84034880

>>
>>84034817
That's why we could re-upload the videos themselves onto a more accessible, public platform.

Unless this is a huge "no-no" that's against myspleen rules or something. I don't see anything wrong with it.

What would be incredible is if we could happen to find some of the old Toonami interviews that the Toonami crew didn't keep the tapes for. There were some where they interviewed dubbing studios and stuff like that and nobody saved them.

Here is a tape I had of a colbert report episode from 2008. The tape was damaged so it isn't great quality and has some white flashing every few seconds. Also near the end someone went ondemand and looked through the guide for a few minutes. Also there is a weird al music video at the end. https://mega.nz/#!atdARB7K!JjvozDU6H13nIeM5Za-vVGtNHMNMy3IOlHq4pAICCsU

No sadly. We got some more info about why nick isn't re-releasing it though semi-recently. http://lostmediawiki.com/The_Electric_Piper_(2003_Nickelodeon_TV_Movie)
>>
>>84052790
Whoa.... I never knew about this.
>>
>>84053361
There was also this

"More info from Bill. Just going to get right with it with the copy-paste.

"So the original impulse for the Electric Piper came from me first adapting the Pied Piper. I had written about a third of an original animated musical using my own style, coming straight from my heart. I was drawn to the subject because it has a parallel to the experience of the 60s, when an entire generation was drawn away from what their parents wanted for them and their parents' values by music. Rock n roll and the culture that surrounded it seduced away a generation. And the parents could be said to have lost their values and failed to "pay the piper". I pitched my Pied Piper to Hanna-Barbera and they loved it and were going to do it for sure, but then Fred torpedoed it because of other problems he was having at Turner.
>>
>>84053477

Later at Nick, the idea reemerged but the people in charge of producing (including Fred) didn't like my original music and wanted to hire a heavy hitter songwriter to do the music. Fred stood up for me and insisted they give me a chance. i knew they wanted hipper, more hit-like songs so I started emulating hit songs from the 60s, which went with the theme and was fun. I wasn't COPYING the songs though. I was writing a song LIKE Pleasant Valley Sunday by the Monkees or LIKE a Motown groove. But Fred said "Make it so it's an actual cop of those songs with just enough difference not to get sued." So I was kind of forced to start, well, plagiarizing. Our songs were nearly identical to the originals that inspired them.

But then the Nick Lawyers said "Whoa, you can't be that close to these songs. These are the biggest, richest M-Effers in showbiz and they will definitely sue." So we went back and UNcopied most of the songs. Took out recognizable intros and chords. This was kind of soul crushing to me. Not only was I NOT writing truly from my heart, I had gotten embroiled in a plagiarism thing and I have VERY high moral scruples about plagiarism. If I think I've come even remotely close to nicking someone's tune I freak and change it immediately. But, we did it, and meanwhile I was given 3 WEEKS to write the entire book and music and lyrics. This was due to the incompetence of Sherry Gunther, who is very high on my shit list right now."

>regularly run select older shows at 4:00 AM in DVR Theater during late spring - early fall.
What are they airing now?
>>
>>84056989
They've been using the block for mainly airing reuruns of their Infomercial parodies (at one point, it was the same episode 5 nights in a row) as well as some new ones and episodes Off the Air, Fishcenter, and a few specials.
>>
>>84057085
>Off the Air
I've said this a lot, but they should really do an episode of that themed after Adult Swim itself.
Just put in a bunch of bumps and shit that Adult Swim has made over the years, surely there's enough to fill up 21 minutes or however long off the air usually is.

A lot of people did. A lot of people taped over those recordings, or misplaced them, or simply lost interest in saving, ripping, and sharing them as time went on.
>>
>>84060425
I had basically every episode of Digimon from late season 1 onwards recorded from their original broadcasts on Fox Kids, plus various marathons, etc. Kind of sad to think of how much was lost when I threw them out...
>>
>>84060391
i'll try 1 but it's going to take forever on a 5mbps upload connection

>>84060392
yeah. there's a couple weeks missing cause those tapes are all fucked up. also some were recorded on 2 hour tapes so it cuts off about 3 minutes into cowboy bebop.

>>
>>84034202

[email protected]
>>
>>84060482
Can you compress them and then upload somewhere?

If anything, the AS stuff from really early 2002 is probably the rarest of what you have.
>>
Should we do another thread? Also, should we have a way for people who upload stuff, say, a few days after this thread to share it with us without needing a myspleen? Like maybe an email address to send the file to whenever you get around to uploading (since I know people are busy) and then we can have an ever expanding master pastebin list of these links
>>
>>84061012
Someone should just make a google doc and people can post their links in there

Alright. I'm heading out now, but if somebody wants to gauge interest in the Toonami threads once it starts that would be cool.

And maybe even make a second thread after this hits bump limit.

Peace.
>>
>>84061062
I don't think that episode of EEnE is that old. but maybe they're planning on doing something like the time rift but for CN.
Hell, if they expanded it so you could pick from a selection of different years that would be pretty great.

Regardless of when this thread 404s, I'll start a new thread sometime on saturday so it would make more sense to crosspost then.

Also, make sure to upload any of your myspleen grabs or personal rips to mega or similar site and share them in the google doc

Wait a fucking minute...I recognize that exact audio compression.
They fucking downloaded this from those low quality streams that used to be on dbz.tv.
They officially uploaded a pirated video. That's why the top and bottom are cut off; they had watermarks saying "Anime-hq" and the name and number of the episode.
>>
>>84107975
god, did it really sound like that?
vegeta sounds TERRIBLE
>>
>>84107975
If the Toonami guys were similar to the Adult Swim guys they don't keep any of those tapes.
>>
>>84108054
FUNi took over from Ocean in 1999, and their acting was pretty bad at first. That episode is from 2000, when the actors were starting to improve. What you're hearing is Chris Sabat's second year voicing Vegeta.

It's a damn shame but its true.

Its funny that that was the source of the video. I was wondering what was up with the quality

This

Sabat even admitted at a con that they "more or less didn't know what they were doing"

I'm not holding that against him, since hey, he admits it, and they finally got it right with Dragon Ball Kai's dub

Does anyone have a holy grail they wish they could relive? I'd love to find a recording of the Cowboy Bebop marathon AS did in 2002. Watched with a bunch of friends. It was what got me watching Adult Swim and into animu beyond Digimon and occasional Toonami. It'd be great to relive it. I can still remember most of the lineup.

you know how there's CN and Nick Reboot? (or at least, there used to be)

I'm mocking up a concept of what an Adult Swim Reboot thing could look like in powerpoint. got pillowboxing borders, the tv rating bug, and the logo bug down squat. dunno whether to do old pool bumps or old B&W bumps with some of the old picture bumps. I can't do actual streaming though, but I could maybe do it in video format to test out the concept?
>>
>>84110414
I don't know what you're talking about but I don't think a powerpoint would cut it
>>
>>84110525
like I said, this is definitely not a stream but I'm just using powerpoint to show what it could look like. powerpoint's pretty good at making a fake network thing with. powerpoint has an export to video option, too

Is there just some massive collection of every song they ever used for their bumpers/short videos I can download? Hell, even the "all kids out of the pool!" funky horn and keyboard intro was great.

I've already done this for real.

You just need 1 or 2 TB worth of shows, a few hundred commercials (ripped from recordings, ad companys' youtube channels), about a hundred cartoon shorts (animators'/animation companys' youtube channel), and a shit load of patience and free time (I work a 9 to 5 so you don't have to be a NEET to pull this off).

The hardest part is getting the timecodes for commercial breaks for every episode of every show. FFmpeg can do this by detecting black frames although false-positives turn up a lot (Batman: TAS, for example, was a pain in the ass).

I've recently been able to stream it too now and then, although only to a couple people at a time due to shitty upload speed and paranoia of "getting caught" by my ISP. No idea if they give a shit anyway.

Pic related, schedules for the 2 channels I have right now. One is a mixed bag of stuff and the other is like an early Nicktoons clone. Every night at 11:59 I have a cron job that runs a script to generate a giant playlist for the next 24 hours for each of the channels. It goes through each show and depending on the show's criteria (half-hour, randomized segments, etc.) it generates a playlist just for that block.

Typical half-hour format is Show Episode A -> Commercials -> "Show Episode B -> Schedule Bump -> Cartoon short (optional) -> Commercials -> Station ID (I made a bunch of these myself in the style of those old CN IDs where the logo is superimposed in a cartoon scene)
>>
>>84127365
...well damn.
>>
>>84127365
please stream mate, would love to chill
>>
>>84126670

Holy shit, I love you.
>>
>>84127365
Holy shit dude that's awesome
>>
>>84127365
Damn, that's interesting. I wish I had the patience for that.
>>
>>84127365
You could run through a random day's worth of "streaming" and upload

>>84110414
This would cool too. Especially the ratings thing. Authenticity is key.
>>
>>84127365
No ISP gives a shit about streaming. What you've done looks amazing. It'd be great if you could put them on a 24 hour stream. I think more internet "channels" are going to be popping up in the future or at least I hope they will be. Netflix is convenient but nothing beats sitting back and enjoying tailored content when it's all good stuff.
>>
>>84127365
I've thought about doing this and sort of came to the conclusion that I would just put commercial breaks between shows instead of looking for the right cuts.
>>
>>84128654
thanks for the complement but yeah >>84127365 absolutely beats my work. my library just consists of aqua teen, brule, bebop, eric andre, FLCL, space ghost (as ghost planet, from the streams AS used to have), birdman, home movies, off the air, morty, sealab, and venture. (at least for Adult Swim shows)
but I'm still gonna try to export an episode of sealab under my thingy tonight to see how it looks.

>On October 1, 1992, Cartoon Network played "The Star Spangled Banner" (which was a tradition whenever a new Turner-owned network launched) and a video of a person placing a dynamite in a field and then blowing the dynamite up, the channel's launch then occurred on that day and was hosted by the MGM cartoon character Droopy in a special event called Droopy's Guide to the Cartoon Network, during which the first cartoon on the network, The Great Piggy Bank Robbery, was shown.

Damn, watching this really makes it obvious how commercialized the network is now. I mean, it's owned by a huge soulless corporation now, but the colors and the music, is so slick for its time-period and so full of spirit. It almost makes it look like AS was always destined to exist.
