Honestly I don't mind if an action game plays cinematic or even like a button masher or whatever. I just want it to do it good.

God of War lacks a lot of the right principles that do that sorta thing well. Or many of the right principles that make an action game good. A shame because barely any director seems to understand how to make one.

That depends entirely on what kind of action game you're going for. You can go for a much more freeform style of technical such as DMC or TW101, a more reactionary type game like Ninja Gaiden or God Hand, a cinematic one like Asura's Wrath, or a button masher such as Kingdom Hearts or Sengoku Basara. All of them are good in their own right entirely for different reasons though. Kingdom Hearts 2 isn't a good action game for even nearly the same reasons DMC3 is and vice versa.

So for this kinda thing you really gotta throw in specifics.

Oh yeah, it sure is fun being railroaded into a straight path with no exploration because the doors slam on you, and item collection being determined at completely arbitrary points. And having to go through a super-heated area until the game just decides you can stop burning to death is fantastic design. Not to mention being unable to move for a while until you find the exact pixel you're meant to find was a fucking blast.

Nah. DMC and W101 are much harder than your average action game. Surprisingly most of the genre is very very watered down for casuals.
