Wild Child. I had the misfortune of discovering comics in the early 90's right when he first joined X-Factor and absolutely fell for him. What followed was the book dissolving into utter nonsense, and the character getting constantly shit on by life and finding out what a gruesome backstory he had. I picked up a bunch of Alpha Fight stuff to get more of his background and I'm a sucker for tragic characters with redemption arcs. But it killed me that his redemption turned into this epic failure with him becoming this pathetic dehumanized villain in Weapon X.

The only time things got better for him was when he became a henchman for Romulus, but the book was awful and I think it really made too many people hate the character or they just assume he was a Loeb creation.

Alot of the appeal of his character is that he refuses to stop being a hero even though life fucking sucks

There are numerous letters pages from old issues of v2 and the even shorter-lived v3 that comment on everything I'm talking about, which you'd know if you ever bothered to look at a comic published before 2006. Even v4 petered out in both quality and sales by the end and it's the closest Rich has ever been to being a star.

The proof is in the pudding. Richard Rider is boring, sells like shit, and has one of the consistently worst fan bases out there. At least Sam's fans don't have their heads so far up their own asses that they can't see straight.

This particular issue is pretty good. Waid/Cheung is a way better creative team than Aaron/Deodatto.

Make no mistake, the actual event was total garbage and not worth reading, but this issue is solid. Just a nice little character piece about Uatu and Sam.

Funfact: the top left panel was originally Miracleman and remained that up through the unlettered preview for this issue but it was changed shortly before the issue came out. Presumably they didn't want to imply that Miracleman was going to be tie-ing into the 616 universe anytime soon hence the last minute change.

It was originally Garthan Saal's splinter origination that he formed of renegade Nova Corpsmen who were using these specially designed helmets to steal Nova Force from the corps. Man, Sam's such a surprise for me. I remember him getting a lot of bad press for not being on the same level as Dick/being Loeb's dead son, but I never really cared about him until AXIS (I really liked his tie-ins with Kluh, and seeing him actually have a big role was great).
