What you are thinking about is consistency. The 1st game is set in ONE set world, with all the levels having some continuity with each other, including the level of technology (steamfuckingpunk at most). It was all basic magic/fantasy theme for all the levels. 2 and 3 had levels that were different worlds with their own unique vibe, and level of technology. There were futuristic levels, pre-historic levels, China-ish levels, cowboy levels......... all oer the place, while 1 keps it consistent.

Actually, I think the thing I liked most about the first game was the subtle melancholy. You were (effectively) the last dragon around. Which is to say, you were alone. In this magic world that didn't always make sense. I think there was one level where you had some fairy allies, but other than that you were on your own. Though like you said there was also a relative consistency to things. Also, the first games levels were less wacky and more whimsical. They looked like they came out of a fantasy artists portfolio of cities, landscapes, and vistas. There was less post modern humor and more... wonder I suppose. It just felt more magical and foreboding while still being very lighthearted. A rare combination.

That's why I said subtle melancholy and "foreboding while still being very lighthearted." Yes, it was not an edgy game. It was definitely family friendly. The 100% completion end cutscene has Spyro wearing sunglasses and bragging to a dragon reporter. It did not take itself too seriously. But it did take itself more seriously than later games. And for that, I will always prefer it. It struck a better balance between wacky and serious.

Everyone likes to post the first we got of Spyro in Skylanders but he looks far better in motion. He's even kept his little charge attacks.

Plus we got a Moneybags look alike in the first few games, Sparx and some other Spyro the dragon in jokes.

Crash is actually designed from original sketches of him by his creator before they made the first game so he'll be fine.

Predators tend to have eyes facing forward to help them better hunt prey in front of them, whereas animals lower on the food chain tend to have them farther on the sides the give a wide peripheral vision that lets them be better aware of anything that may ambush them. Which one of those do you think better fits the idea of a dragon?

The skylanders games smoothed out his design a bit, the op doesnt look nearly as bad as the first game- especially the toys of the first game. Ill cautiously hope this is at least "ok"

I gave the first skylanders a go and its honestly not that bad, though it made me crave a stand alone spyro game again
I loved nearly all of the spyro games though, even the ps2/xbox360 trilogy with cinder. I think nearly all of them are solid and fun to play, I used to replay them all frequently until my ps1 and ps2 got misplaced during moving a few years back.
I hope if this series does well we'll get more focus on spyro again.

However, you need to ask this question:

WHAT the fuck is Spyro??

It is an almost pure platformer (with some mini games) with a light plot and funny dialogue.

NOBODY will make that, unless Activision throws away the IP to whoever wants to use it.

Skylanders sells like tasty food in a rich but starving village. Simple button mashing game for small children with addictive gameplay with constant rewards will always sell more.

Having said that, again, Spyro is a platformer with humor. Anything else is Spyro in name only.

I think Ive pinpointed the real issues I have, the mouth being really high up makes his chin seem large, and his head crest looks better (in my opinion) brought down a bit further

You know, I bought that game when it was released and since then I've tried playing it from the beginning a couple of times but always gave up half way because of all the bullshit it had. The controls were shit, the frame rate was shit, it lagged like fuck, glitches were everywhere and the loading times were horrendous. I always quit playing it because sometimes the loading screen will loop for forever and it would take me a while to realise that the game actually froze. I thought Ripto died, like for real back in the second game?

So after not playing that game for many years I found the game just a few weeks ago and finally forced myself to play it and complete it because I felt like I would be missing something. What a piece of shit that game was. There was literally only 2 cut scenes throughout the entire game. There was this one level called Thieves Den which was designed badly that it was nearly impossible to make a jump onto another platform which took me a few hours to complete. What was the point in moneybags and the dragons only being there for one level? All that aside, the final boss level was absolutely shit. Apparently it's longer everywhere else but in the PS2 one, the battle just stopped half way and Ripto just ran away. The battle literally only lasted 1 minute in the one I played. This game left a bad taste in my mouth that I had to complete the first 3 games again just to feel better. Worth it.

I've been replaying through 1 too, and I can also confirm that it's aged really well. It's one of those experiences where you realize why something was hyped to hell when it first came out. Charging around the world never gets old, the transitions between worlds are waaaaaaay smoother than I was expecting, and the game has that perfect balance of being easy enough for kids to not feel intimidated, but challenging enough that even a grown-ass gamer has to think strategically about certain challenges. Like, getting all the items in the first flying bonus stage is difficult, but not borderline impossible like the "collect the rings!" bonus stages from Sonic 2.

I hate to double-post, but I gotta reiterate how much I fuckin' love infinite charging. There's no wind-up, no stamina meter that causes you to get tired after a while because the game's decided you're having too much fun - you can just run fucking infinitely, with at worst a 1 second "Spyro running into shit" animation.

That tone shifts and re-characterizations have shifted so dramatically is mostly important insofar as it impacted humor, which is mostly a ghost of what it was, and what I was saddest to see go. It's like reading Game Informer now as opposed to like 12 years ago.

I'd agree but then again I never finished it because my English wasn't very good back then and got to a point where I was stuck between the first and the snowy places with half the levels locked and a recycled boss fight and never figured out how to make an progress from there.
