In case you missed it, Joyce gets teeth bearing angry at Becky wearing a dress.

Also, Becky looks ugly in a dress almost like she looks ugly in everything because she is a guttersnipe

Of course it fucking is.
I don't get the last panel at all. Getting superglue on her dress to have an excuse to change it, then? That doesn't mean shit unless you carry glue and spare clothes everywhere. It's a complete non sequitur.
Is she then implying that she got glue in her hair to have an excuse to cut it short, because she wasn't allowed to have short hair? That also doesn't make sense since just about everybody else in this comic has short hair, including the religious Brown family.

On a side note about hair, Willis should go back to his old shading. The shine he does makes them look like Lego hairpieces.
>>
>>83803223

The point is that Becky has a goofy bulldyke haircut which is generally frowned upon in religious communities.

>>
>>83800517
Some notes.

1. Even the text on the phone is in all caps because Willis is too lazy to make things look like what we're accustomed to seeing.

2. Carla's hat is stupid.

3. The last panel is just the first panel with the layers slightly moved.

4. Carla is a terrible excuse for a human being, and I hope Ruth doesn't end up in the hospital because Carla is too lazy and insufferable to actually take the time to worry about someone else, especially someone like Ruthless who genuinely needs someone to help her. Screw you, Carla. If you're so oppressed as a trans person, then you know what it's like to be utterly depressed, and that means you know how Ruth feels like right now. You piece of crap.
>>

>>

>>83806564
>'oh yeah she was a bisexual all along it just never came up'

Pretty sure the same thing applies here. I think he's actively avoided explicitly stating sexualities specifically so he can manipulate them and say it's been that way the whole time.

Only a few people have made references to their preferences, and even then, they're not particularly specific. Even the straightest characters have little crushes on people of the same gender.

I would just assume, because Willis is Willis, everyone is bi. Even Becky. Just because no one wants to be a lesbian THAT badly.

Lots of comics get posted in DoA threads - Funky Winkerbean, Cerebus... basically anything that encourages people to get out of these threads and read something better than DoA (think of it as a community service). College USA certainly fits that bill, but then I can't really think of much that wouldn't aside from maybe SYAC, Sinfest, and Assigned Male.

Willis did a randomly selected April Fool's swap with David Gonterman one year. If nothing else, it proved he isn't even the worst cartoonist named David. All these years later and he still is more coherent than Gonterman.
>>
>>83799762
So, as someone who has no exposure to this comic outside of stumbling ass first into these fucking god awful threads...

It seems like maybe 90%-95% of the cast of this is gay, trans, or both. Is that actually the case? Is this comic written in such a hugboxy world that the author has convinced himself that this minority actually manages to outnumber the straight cis population?

No, it's the opposite of that. He was cultured on communion wafers and soundproof foams to keep the Jesus Preaching inside him, and now is so embittered by how his parents raised him, and so desperate to be accepted, that he is directly creating a comic for the very specific niche of tumblr/the internet that wants that kind of faux-accepting LGBT+, anti-racist hug box which is actually just as homophobic and racist but in new and shittier ways, just so that he can feel vindicated in being in complete and total ideological opposition to his parents.

Believe me, they were the bane of my LGBT friends' existences. Almost all of them were populated by wealthy suburbanites that had taken a handful of courses on the topic and were basically just utilizing it to degrade and belittle people in new and more intricate manners.

There are a lot of LGBT groups and ethnic celebration clubs that are 100% great people who are there to challenge you as much as support you, but those hugboxes were just breeding grounds for the most unbearable kinds of people.

Hank expressed that he thinks that Becky's dad is an asshole and has wanted to punch him in the face before. He probably has different values than him. Maybe he thinks that looking ridiculous is the consequence of getting glue in your hair, so she gets glue in it so that she can have a one-side cut.

Joyce's parents believe that Becky is a bad influence on Joyce. If Joyce acts up, they might completely cut off contact, which means that Becky loses a huge part of her surrogate family here, which could also have financial consequences (not good for a homeless person.) Joyce doesn't want to argue on Becky's behalf and risk that happening unless Becky wants her to.

You're stupid.
>>
>>83812683
>Carla looks like she has bacon wrapped around her head

This guy doesn't seem so bad.
>>
>>83801326
When the Browns raised their children, they thought that traditional gender roles were very important. Additionally, it is a common stereotype that lesbians are usually masculine.
Carol is making Becky wear a dress because Becky's sexual orientation defies traditional gender roles, and making her adhere to those makes her more bearable, or even changes her, in Carol's eyes (notice how she's not wearing a dress, and probably won't make Joyce wear one.) Whatever her intent, Becky doesn't want to wear the dress (which people can do without having a particular reason) and Carol is trying to hide or change Becky's sexuality instead of accept and love her, which understandably pisses off Joyce.
>>
>>83812882

Left to right, top to bottom, assumed or stated sexualities:

straight, straight, straight
bi, straight, bi
straight, gay, straight
asexual?, VERY gay, gay tendencies but might like dudes
straight, pansexual, straight
asexual (and trans), straight, gay tendencies

There are also a bunch of background/recurring characters who are not straight.

Straight:
Mary
Joyce's would-be rapist (Ryan)
At least one of the Rachels (there are two)
Sierra
Agatha

Bi:
Robin

Gay:
Leslie
Grace
Mandy
Newspaper editor-in-chief (Daisy)

Trans:
Josh/Jocelyne (unknown orientation)

They're paid and get a free room to themselves. They usually have to hold meetings, work the check-in desk, go to meetings, hold floor meetings, do one-on-ones with supervisors, and plan/host events for their residents on a regular basis.

Yeah, you aren't allowed to say that Carla was being a disruptive jerk. If you say that she was also in the wrong, then it's because you're totally transphobic.

Carla explicitly states that she wants to be a jerk since everyone else is. But you dare not speak against her as a reader.

They focus on the fact that Mary said something vaguely transphobic, which leads to "the ends doesn't justify the means" BS and completely distracts from the issue of Carla being a turd.

Wrong. We did it because they refused to unconditionally surrender. We wanted an unconditional surrender. We had no choice. The atomic bombings were the route that resulted in the lowest Japanese loss of life.

True, but the modern narrative is "White Man Always WRONG."

There is a story floating that the military wouldn't allow the government of Japan to surrender.

But, honestly, they killed more people in one city than the entire Holocaust. (Even the original, inflated number that is officially admitted to be wrong.) They got what they asked for.

There's also the fiction of the civilian. That there is such a thing as a non-military target in war.
There are things we avoid hitting, on the grounds that we don't like being complete monsters. But everything in a nation during war time goes to support it's war. Factories? They produce ammo and war machines. Farms? An army fights on its stomach.

It's a legal fiction, created to persecute the command structure of a defeated nation.

That's all war-crimes are, losing the war.

I think it involves some kind of brainwashing.

I have trans friends and I love them dearly, but I can't imagine saying that this kind of behavior is okay just because she's trans.

I guess the arc with her and Mary tipped the scales.

And part of the problem is that everyone is still looking at her like she's still Ultra-Car in Shortpacked!--Ultra-Car was a blight on the earth, but it was a bit of a funniness prior to getting her humanoid body. Because it was a car who sent people to the Amazon Rainforest. That's at least a little funny. And there were never consequences. Everyone ended up okay. No one's feelings were genuinely hurt by Ultra-Car, particularly because it's a robot, so why not?

But here, she is a person who is doing these terrible things to a small woman who has different opinions.

Everyone still sees her as the car, and no one sees that Mary deserves to study in peace.

But Mary DOESN'T deserve to study in peace! As commenters like Cerberus helpfully keep pointing out, Mary is OBVIOUSLY a "curtain-twitcher" who is actively looking to spoil people's fun and pick on the Poor Ol' Transgirl, and Carla is OBVIOUSLY an "awesome little brat" who's Suffered For Her Status repeatedly offscreen, totally, of course, and is totally justified in being an annoying fuckhead who nobody would tolerate in real life.
>>
>>83830033
people (namely the doa commenters, who im assume youre referring to) DONT actually think this is okay. some of them suspect shes going to change her mind and come back for ruth, (i mean its only 7:30 AM) and some are already calling her an asshole for this. theyre just not retroactively applying that to her previous behavior.

But she doesn't, because she's a hateful little turd. Even back when Willis was a Christian Mary's concept was "sanctimonious hypocrite that other Christians can't stand"
frankly everyone sympathizing with her creeps me out, but it may just be that I'm Jewish
>>
>>83835980
they just relate to her because theyre also sanctimonious hypocrites
>>
>>83835980
The difference being Carla was knowingly aggravating Mary for reasons unrelated to Mary's condescending attitude or practices, she was just trying to do her schoolwork.
>>
>>83835980
She didn't throw the first stone--Carla did. I'm not saying that Mary's actions and personality are justified. But she was minding her own business when Carla came along.

Let her get retribution when she actually deserves it.

She's literally the only person on this floor that cares about school anymore--even Dorothy seems to have dropped the ball.

Everyone deserves a quiet study place, even if they're hateful little turds. They'll get bitten on the butt later on.

Okay, so dude says that certain hairstyles and grooming types are not accepted by society. This is true for men with long hair and women who don't shave their armpits, for example. A lot of regulations, including for the military, prevent black women from wearing their hair naturally. He is essentially referring to all of these things.

Someone says this:
"Yes, because your ancestors were enslaved for having beards."

And continues to rant. Yes, curly hair is EXACTLY why Africans were enslaved. Their hair is precisely the freaking reason why black people were slaves for all that time in the U.S. It makes SO much more sense.

It's the final stage of a mutagenic bioweapon employed by the Soggies. Essentially it forcibly alters the physiology of its victims to that of a Soggy. However, since most victims lack the undifferentiated neural system of Soggies it causes mental collapse as the brain can no longer process signals correctly. The end result is a barely cohesive protoplasmic mass of varying degrees of consciousness.
>>

So while looking for a means to bypass DumbingOfAge.com's redirects and find a way to access the buffered strips, I came across this: A guest appearance on the now-concluded webcomic "Woody After Hours", which describes itself as "a webcomic centering around the daily lives of a group of people who put on a late-night talk show at the historic SWR Theater in Raleigh, NC." The main gimmick appears to be the talk show's guests being characters from other web comics.

This particular strip dates to 22 December 2014. I'll post the rest as I find them.

Also, if anybody knows anything about Wordpress, specifically what kind of generic URLs I should use to peruse secret stacks and shit, please be so kind as to tell me. DumbingOfAge.com is essentially a fancy Wordpress site.

Ben Carter, writer of "Woody After Hours", interviewed Willis before these strips were published. He does it with all guest artists, it seems. Here's a choice excerpt:

>Ben: What was going on in your life professionally and personally when you initially decided that you wanted to create and publish this comic on the web?
>David: Why did I want to create this particular comic? Not any of the other dozen? Um, I guess I was at San Diego Comic-Con 2010, boozing it up with Joel Watson, and he told me to quit my terrible comic about a toy store and instead draw a comic he called “Dumbing of Age” and he immediately began writing down character and plot ideas for me and then drawing all the strips himself.

You really shouldn't use "midget" either. I grew up with a friend who had dwarfism. He wasn't a fan of the term and preferred "dwarf." A lot of people with dwarfism prefer "little people."

"Midget" is pretty much always used in a negative context, so it's better to avoid it.

You know, honestly, that just makes it sound really unfulfilling. I've seen that line before, but something about it right now just makes this whole comic sound like even more of a waste than I realized.

There will be no conclusions at all. We'll never find out if they liked their majors or not, if they changed majors, changed schools, joined the swim team, mentored incoming freshmen, became RAs just to prove they could do better than Ruth, and so on.

It's so hollow. They will never graduate, and they will never age. What a delightful exercise in pointlessness.

Wait, so if it is the Walkyverse Dina then it would mean either that there is a massive change in the history of the Walkyverse, since it would imply that Dina is time travelling and was plucked from before her death, or that Dina returns to the past, with the implication that she's completely aware of her impending death.

I actually really hope that they'll all drop out at the end of the year. Every. Last. One.

for the tumblr crowd a bi woman is just a lesbian who dated men in the past. Ruth will never feel attraction to a man ever again because she has dated a woman. now that's not to say Willis wouldn't write her in to a love triangle or something (which is something he'll do with a character at some point. it's a good cheap easy way to get drama going) but i guarantee you that hypothetical third person will not be a man. her attraction to men will never come up again.

Dude. That is horrifying. Just think about Dina and who she is in DoA. She is really unable to talk to most people, she has a girlfriend who still has the hots for her best friend, and she appears to be wholly inexperienced in regards to the world.

If this is true, it is utterly depressing that she has regressed this far or is pretending to be who she is in the comic currently.
>>
>>83842257
DoA Dina isn't Walkyverse Dina you dingdong
>>
>>83842257
Different universe. DoA is essentially an AU of his earlier comics.

I'm kinda sorta fleshing out a story about the idea that that Willis' works exist in a unified multiverse.

I'm assuming he later wanted Becky to have a hyper controlling Toedad and her having a cellphone conflicted with that idea

Now this means that her statements are now on the internet forever. Not only do ALL the people on her floor know exactly how much contempt she holds for them, any and all staff of the college do as well. Not to mention any and all prospective applicants to the college. She's essentially the face of the college now. And I don't think anyone would consider her little display a good thing.

I can't believe this is getting daily threads of hundreds of posts. This garbage doesn't deserve attention, even if it's negative attention. You guys have no taste in trainwrecks.
What percentage of these threads is shills, tasteless fans, or haters? I'm seriously skeptical that even the haters aren't just fans/shills doing it for publicity. This is fucking ridiculous. Dobson doesn't get this much attention. There are "critics" who know the "personalities" of these "characters". I read Shortpacked for almost it's entire run except maybe the last year or two, and I don't remember any of them. You people should be ashamed!

>>83810087
Yeah. That might be better. As long as it's not constantly flooding over with exactly the same garbage as this thread. The last thing we need is something like /toy/'s Transformers general threads, flooding multiple threads, a minimum of one per day.

Uhg. I wish this was kept to a once-a-week thing. Not like LASTING a week, I mean like weekends. It looks like volume alone is enough to outpace detractors. ... Lesson learned. One day I will unleash my horrible vengeance upon the world, and it will burn.

It was actually more than that. Part of the Mosaic law was that both adulterers were to be stoned. So by bringing the woman and trying to get Jesus to "enforce" and "obey" the law they were disregarding and disobeying it themselves. It's basically the idea of going so far to destroy someone you see a threat to your principles and way of life, that you have to throw out your principles to beat them.

Alright, so I'm good with one of the guys at Slipshine and apparently they're paying Willis for another comic. No surprise there. What is a surprise is that he said he would have it sync up with the the strip on the day it was finished. Which means he's drawing and writing a porn comic that will be up to date with the strip he posts in like two or three months. HOWEVER, and this is just what I've been told, Willis was apparently in a pissy mood during the chat and he fucking spilled the beans on some up and coming plot points. They are as follows.
>Amber and Sal have an actual fight that starts with Amber scratching up Sal's bike and puncturing her tires.
>Dorothy and Danny have a huge argument over Amazi-Girl, with Dorothy not willing to admit that Amazi-Girl isn't emotionally or mentally healthy. Danny accidentally lets it slip that he also knows that Amber is Amazi-Girl. Dorothy asks what Danny did to Amber to make her dump him, and it starts into a shouting match between the two, until Walky shows up.
>It turns out Carla's adopted and she's always felt like her parents didn't really love her.
>Mary doesn't really do anything of consequence.
>Billie finds herself without anyone to talk to lately, and realizes she doesn't have that many friends, which leads to her trying to break into Ruth's room, only to find her gone. There's a note on the bed saying that she "Had to go take care of some things". This leads to Billie confronting Carla and screaming at her for not doing the one damn thing she asked, with Carla responding that Ruth isn't her responsibility. More of the people on the floor come out because it looks like Billie and Carla might fight each other.
>Becky keeps receiving dirty looks and cold shoulders from most people back home, and Joyce finally looses it during a family dinner one night with her family(her brother/sister is there), and it ends with her breaking down crying because nothing is the same.
>Then a knock on the door, and Joe shows up.

"See guys, Sal's not a thug, she's just always being kept down. And she's black!"

>>
>>83850397
Ahah. Another lesson in evil webcomic authors to learn: impenetrable jargon/context that requires you to invest merely to make a value judgement or criticism.
Although something tells me Willis' formula isn't worth recreating without perfecting.

I wonder if I can figure out the rules.
#1 CONSISTENT UPDATES.
frequent updates. {keep interest from dropping off.}
updates of satisfying mini-resolution. {smaller narrative arc, eg: a joke with a lead-in and delivery, though as most popular webcomics illustrate, this can be non-jokes as well. It's all about pacing.}
pandering to superficial tastes, like fetishes.
drama, especially with unlikable characters that you can disagree with other people on. throw in cognitive dissonance so that your social morays require you to accept them?
previously-mentioned "depth"/[immediate inaccessibility]. Traditionally this is achieved through stretching out the plot and starting without a "traditional" {relatively older tradition} introduction so as to begin with mystery and questions.
Notoriety. "No publicity is bad publicity." Shill, whore-out, start fake/real rumors, make a ridiculous fool of yourself, start a cult by emotionally manipulating your fans. Anything to get people talking about the brand.

Am I missing anything? I only dabble in magic, but maybe some sigil/chaos magic?
>>
>>83855148

>You enjoy this? Why?

IDK about the dude you were asking, but the edits are funny, and I get a little feeling of schadenfreude thinking about how deranged Willis is.
>>
>>83854646
But why? Why would someone squander the last month of a long-running comic like that? You have the opportunity to do all the things you wish you'd done. Choosing to do stupid filler after saying there wouldn't be any filler--regardless of whether it's a joke or not--is just idiotic.

Forgot to mention, the incest punchline doesn't work if you fully read the storyline that he's referring to. At the time he did that comic, he (and a lot of other readers who had followed it recently via Comics Curmudgeon or wherever) made the assumption those two were related because Batiuk drew them kind of similar and this had happened.

Some people believe that Batiuk now has the girl keep referring to her father to make it clear that the two aren't blood related.

>>83856318
You don't know many rich people if you think they'll be paying for elective surgery/hormone therapy and continue to carry their name if they didn't at the bare minimum like her.
Carla is more and more a spoiled little shit with a chip on her shoulder for no reason.

Hahah. Joke's on you. Willis had no more desires or ambitions with the strip. The punchline is your disappointment. It honestly strikes me as that.

>>83855558
>history
When I think of that word in this context I don't think of only a single incident. That's disappointing.

>>83855215
I just find his baseline dysfunction as an artist to be mundane.
... and now that I'm reframing him in this evil genius light, I wonder if the more outrageous stuff of his that I take pleasure in might also be fabrications. {I'm sure he wishes passing out and shitting himself on a plane, or not masturbating until he were well into his adult years for fear of his dead grandmother watching him masturbate were just fabrications... but I can't rule it out. An author becomes part of the brand.}
Schadenfreude I would think comes from a sense of justice being served. but the brand doesn't suffer by Willis' reported suffering. well... perhaps it might turn some people off.

Like I said, I feel you have poor taste in schadenfreude, not that I disapprove of schadenfreude itself.

>>83856190
Hah. Well memed.

What? I thought /v/ was about loving dickgirls. /v/ and dickgirls go together like Dobson and Carnevale. God damn, I wish Carnevale in Dosbon threads was protected under the rules. It's too beautiful.

>>83855148
>You enjoy this? Why?

It's nothing I need to justify to you.

>I'm not sure I could get an admin to believe it unless more people were upset.

I guess you're just going to have to deal with it then. Hide the thread and move on. I have no desire to read the Heathcliff threads and them stating the patently obvious that we can easily see in the comic for ourselves. So I never enter them. Problem solved. Simple as that. Because unlike you I can accept that not everyone shares my tastes. And I dont suffer the arrogance that they should have to change for me.

No one says you have to like it, but no one is obligated to do as you say

Yes I do.

In fact I'm sure I know richer people than you do.

They could literally only care if she gives the family a bad name (and yes that's still a concern for some rich folks) and if being trans is a trendy thing a la Jenner then they won't give a fuck.

Assuming she's had full SRS, breast and ass augmentation, total body hair removal, and a few of the more common facial feminizing surgeries her parents are on the hook for at least $70,000 for her transitioning, not including hormone treatments and psych sessions. Her parents are paying for everything so they're shelling out $11,000 a year for tuition and $8200, at least, a year for housing, plus however much she needs for textbooks. Even if they're "can't find my keys, guess I have to buy a new car" rich, they still obviously give a shit about Carla. They can't be any worse than Dina's parents and Dina's parents aren't bad at all.

Joe is yet another character who is too good for this comic. And way too good for the porn comics.

Eh. 99% of the time I would ignore it. 1% of the time it's something I care enough to want to destroy.
If you're a fan, we're well past finding common ground. If it's schadenfreude, that's something. Just be careful, because I think this one might be playing with fire. Some of you guys are alright. Don't go to the DOA thread tomorrow.

Pretty sure fair use is a thing. It's not like he's ripping Willis off wholesale.

For the record, I think the dewd should do a lot of research before he looks into doing a physical print run.
>>
>>83857991
>fair use
doesnt apply if youre fucking selling it, what is so hard to understand about that
>>
>>83857733
Parody isn't illegal. If Willis had a hissy fit he'd have to prove that Dewd isn't writing a parody, which Dewd has expressly stated it is since before he put out the first strip, and should he win that argument, that Dewd is plagiarizing.

>>83857796
Unless Carla is exposing herself and is pre-op there is no reason why she'd have to go shower earlier. Due to scheduling differences you'll find people showering at different times of the day in dorms. Also the dorm they stay in, which is a real dorm, has attached bathrooms.

http://www.copyright.gov/fair-use/more-info.html

its not technically a clear cut thing, and theres a lot of things that go into the ruling. but most often something would be considered fair use if it was either non-commercial, or a parody. thats why i said itd be fine if dewd DID keep his comic explicitly a parody and market it only as that, but branching out into a stand-alone comic would not be allowed.
>>
>>83858237
>>83858842
also you can check out the cases listed there if you want, but even parodies arent automatically protected and it could still be ruled as illegal. so its really not a good idea to sell it at all

Considering he's already started to branch away from DoA, he could just do a rewrite of earlier stuff and be in the clear. He could also claim precedent with Suntrust Bank v. Houghton Mifflin Co.

and yet there are examples of commercial properties that differed enough to not infringe on IP rights. I don't think Willis can lay claim to all webcomic dramas about high school with racially and sexually diverse characters, even if you threw in WACKY totally original characters like a robot! Seriously, isn't that every {shitty} webcomic?
>>
>>83859705
>I don't think Willis can lay claim to all webcomic dramas about high school with racially and sexually diverse characters
the setting isnt the issue, its the story

>>83859599
yeah a rewrite would pretty much solve the problem
>>

I think the point is that something that doesn't really warrant analysis. You can assume that if you want to, but it's not anything we can prove either way.
>>
>>83859456
Nah, it's a full-on, Rent-style musical about a group of poor transfolk in the big city.

Instead of AIDS everyone gets murdered because Canada actually has a pretty high rate of violence against urban poor that is mostly ignored.
>>
>>83859807
You know, I've never seen or heard of a work of fiction that has more than three trans characters in it. I wonder what it'd be like.
