Then, that bitter taste of failure after what seemed like his final victory began the process of Jack becoming more jaded about his quest over time, hence the darker tone.

Those robots were for his personal army, to retaliate any other enemy that might appear, but mainly internal oposition. The resistence on the episode is pretty evident to be on his own City.

My theory about this plot is that Aku somehow wound up owning the sword and flung Samurai Jack 50 years into the future. The plot of Season 5 is probably gonna be an aged Jack, 50 years further into the future, rallying up the rebellion, which was crushed in the story reel, to put an end to Aku once and for all. Basically, Season 5 is gonna be Jack's quest to reunite all of the characters from 1-4.

Are you getting this from the comic? Because, again, that's non-canon and not indictive at all of what Genndy's doing. If it's 50 years in the future, Jack's not going to be able to unite all of those characters.

Also, I don't think this was just Aku flinging Jack even further into the future, as one of the tweets mentions that Jack isn't even doing anything to stop Aku now. He's lost all hope--and living through 50 years of failure would be a much stronger explanation for that than just getting flung again.

I'm pretty sure some of these worry us because it seems disrespectful to the focus the show originally had, which is what made it so respectable and good. Even I'm fairly worried.

On the other hand these are just plot points, and nothing more. Hopefully Genndy hasn't lost his touch and knows what he's doing, since this darker approach after all doesn't completely overshadow what it is everyone liked about Samurai Jack. Hopefully it can still come out a respectable result with just as much atmosphere without ruining characterization or otherwise.

If you think about it, there's no logical reason Aku shouldn't have killed Jack yet. The implication of that is that he might be keeping Jack alive ON PURPOSE.

Aku seems to have the ability to grant immortality to people for the purpose of prolonging their punishment. The Lava Viking was magically sealed in a stone by Aku and thrust into a mountain, then by force of will managed to manipulate that magic and his prison over thousands of years to make his lava body. When the magic was destroyed by Jack's sword, the viking aged rapidly and died.

After betraying Jack through Ikra, Aku taunts Jack "Your time on this miserable Aku-infested land continues"

In episode 30, Aku DOES get the sword from Jack, and intends to destroy it, and even though the better option would have been to destroy it first and kill Jack later, Aku wants poetic justice. He feels if he must kill Jack, it should be a death that will satisfy his need for vengeance. By the end of the episode he learns that the sword can't hurt Jack, so that plan's out the window. If it can't be sweet irony, why even bother killing him at all?

So I'm thinking in the new series, Aku has the sword again and doesn't think Jack will ever be able to get it back. He has cursed the samurai to make him immortal, dooming him to forever wander the miserable Aku-infested land. The samurai will spend eternity in the future he hates, living in the world that exists the way it does because of his failure, knowing that even if he does make it into the past, he wouldn't be able to kill Aku without the sword, and unable to ever see his family again because he cannot die. It is much crueler, and more Aku's style.

Of course, in the end, this is going to come back and bite Aku in the ass when Jack inevitably gets his sword back and taunts Aku about how he can't die.

I don't think the more "adult" tone is going to be too obnoxious. We saw a storyboard preview hidden in AS website and it didn't seem really different from the tone the show used to have. I think it's going to be more of a fix in the sense that artists will not be feared of putting some reasonable blood and gore instead of forcing replacing it with oil and broken robot arms.

I don't know what to think about Jack getting a gun though. Seems quite out of character, and so does him getting a motorcycle. The armor is fine.

This worries me. This always worries me. Creative teams almost always do better when they have limitations. The fact that they're being allowed to fully embrace violence makes me worry it will become less creative, overall.

Just look at Ren and Stimpy. When it got revived for Spike TV with a TV-MA rating, it fucking sucked. On the flip-side Kevin Smith movies suck on ice, but the best thing he ever did was Clerks Animated, when he had to restrict himself to what could be aired on network TV.

I'm just saying, I can't think of a single instance where limitations being removed from a creative team as been a good thing. Limitations encourage creativity.

IIRC Samurai Jack was originally going to be a straight up samurai show akin to Lone Wolf and Cub or some shit, and while Genndy was talking to the exec they realized they wouldn't be able to have any action and violence if all of the enemies were human and Genndy went "Well what if the enemies were robots" and that's where the entire future element came into play.

I doubt all of Jack's enemies in the new episodes will be flesh and blood, since the robot element is such a staple of the show. It just means they won't need to use robots or creative censorship to do stuff like pic related. The show has always been and was always intended to be brutal.

Well yeah, in the show robots are pretty much just as sentient and alive as non-robots. There are several cities populated solely by robots. Tale of X-9 is so sad because X-9 has an emotion chip and human motivations.
But as far as censorship goes, it doesn't matter how human the robots are; physically, they're robots, so it's okay to shred them.

Like with Jack and the cannibal family. They probably would have been actual human cannibals if cartoons were allowed to show humans being mutilated, but since anything other than that is okay, they're robots who eat metal.

I agree that it's a creative way of circumventing the rules, but I also think it's important to be able to show that Jack, although presented as righteous, is extremely brutal. He just seems less brutal because he kills things that aren't technically human or alive. It'll be interesting to see how people react to realizing that Jack is just as violent and murderous as Aku, but is the hero because his motivations are selfless rather than selfish and he
usually kills in self defense.
